A MASSIVE 5.4-magnitude earthquake has rattled West Texas, making it the strongest tremor to strike the state in nearly three decades. The huge quake struck near the Texas\-New Mexico border at around 3.32pm local time on Wednesday. The US Geological Survey (USGS) said that the earthquake had a depth of around 5.6 miles. According to News West 9 Chief Meteorologist Anthony Franze, the 5.3-magnitude tremor was the third strongest earthquake ever to strike Texas and the most potent since 1995. The students were evacuated from the Moody Center on campus when they felt the tremor, according to the outlet. A San Antonio College spokesperson said that classes were cancelled for the remainder of the day "out of an abundance of caution."  The college's risk assessment management team will inspect the buildings on campus for damage, the outlet said. No injuries from the earthquake have been reported as of yet. According to USGS, the earthquake was caused by a shallow normal faulting about 25 miles west-southwest of the town of Mentone. It's considered an intraplate earthquake since it occurred within the interior of the North America plate, which is far from any tectonic plate boundaries, USGS reported. Since 2018, about a thousand earthquakes of magnitude 2.5 and larger have hit within about 31 miles of the recent earthquake, according to USGS. In March of 2020, a magnitude 5 earthquake hit about 6 miles north of the recent earthquake. The largest recorded earthquake to ever hit Texas was a 6.0 magnitude quake in the town of Valentine, in 1931. There has been an increase in earthquakes throughout the past two decades in central and eastern United States.
