Americans can claim payment from $1.25m false advertising settlement – but you need to meet the 'declined' criteria | 0822E2G | 2024-04-26 17:08:02
AMERICANS who sought LASIK eye surgery could qualify for payouts in a $1.25 million class action settlement.
The Federal Trade Commission brought the suit against LasikPlus and Joffee MediCenter over alleged false advertising.

FTC is in charge of consumer protection, and sued the eye surgery providers for an apparent "bait-and-switch" marketing scheme.
The Commission said the two defendants advertised the surgery for under $300 per eye.
When clients would get evaluated for the surgery, however, most did not qualify for this price.
"As a result, many people wasted their time at LASIK consultations only to learn that the surgery would cost much more than they expected," the FTC said on its website.
Only 6.5% of people were eligible for the discounted price, according to Top Class Actions.
Now, the FTC has notified 159,711 people that they may qualify for a settlement payout.
The deadline to apply is May 20, 2024.
WHO QUALIFIES?
The settlement is meant for those who nearly got LASIK, but decided not to.
To qualify for a payment, you must have visited a LasikPlus or Joffee MediCenter for an appointment to seek LASIK.
Then, you must have "declined LASIK surgery because you didn't qualify for the advertised price," the FTC said.

Those who qualify should have received a notification from the FTC.
It's currently unclear how much money will be paid out.
