SOME Americans could qualify for a direct payment worth hundreds without any proof required.

The distribution comes from a multi-million dollar settlement agreed upon after a class action lawsuit.

Direct payments could be headed out soon to eligible class members[/caption]

The suit claims the defendant, Haemonetics Corporation, violated an Illinois law called the Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA), per the settlement website.

Haemonetics is a healthcare company that provides blood and plasma services, including software to help donation facilities, such as Octapharma Plasma Inc., to process patient data.

The plaintiffs accused Haemonetics of providing finger scan donor management software that collected and stored patient biometric information without their consent.

Haemonetics denied any wrongdoing in the case but agreed to a settlement pot of $8.73 million to resolve the claims.

The court has also not decided if the defendants were in the wrong.

ELIGIBILITY

There are only two crucial factors that qualifying claimants need to meet to receive a direct payment.

First, they must've scanned their finger at a plasma donation facility in Illinois and had some of their alleged biometric data shared without their written consent beforehand.

Second, the finger scanning at the plasma donation facilities in Illinois must've occurred within a specific period between February 4, 2016, and February 8, 2024.

Claimants also need not provide documentation or proof of their experience at the plasma donation facilities.

Records previously obtained by the settlement administrator should verify those who are eligible after meeting the first two requirements.

FILING A CLAIM

Some who qualify for a distribution from the settlement pot should've already been notified by mail or email.

They would've been given a class member ID.

Those who did not receive the notice can still file a claim form online through the settlement website, similar to members.'

There's also a printable form for a mail-in option.

An address as to where the form should be mailed to is listed on the site.

DEADLINES

Claimants must file a form by May 9, 2024 to be eligible for a payment from the settlement pot.

An objection or exclusion deadline is set for May 2.

A final approval hearing is set for about one month after the other deadlines on June 6.

Class action lawsuits offer groups of people, or 'classes,' a way to band together in court.

Neglecting to submit forms by the dates listed above will disqualify claimants from the result they seek.

PAYMENT

The total settlement pot is $8,735,220.

Eligible class members who submit a validated claim form can expect estimated one-time payments ranging from $250 to $750.

The amounts could vary based on the number of approved claims.

It's unclear when the payments will go out if the settlement is approved, but it will likely be sometime before the end of 2024.
