Cara Delevingne on the experience of playing Sally Bowles | 8A82NP0 | 2024-04-27 14:08:01

"I didn't know that I could play Sally, let alone wanted to, until the opportunity arose," Delevingne tells me, confessing that she hadn't seen the film version or read the play when she took on the part, but had seen her great friend Sienna Miller perform the role on Broadway in 2015. Miller was quick to tell Delevingne she would be amazing as Sally, which Delevingne dismissed at the time as rather "ridiculous".
Delevingne has spent a year preparing for Cabaret, in which she stars opposite Luke Treadaway as the elusive Emcee, and Michael Ahomka-Lindsay, who shines as the American writer Cliff Bradshaw. Acting is one of the earliest memories Delevingne holds; she recalls, aged five, finding great solace on stage. "I remember losing myself and finding myself, all in the centre of this tornado. It was confusing and amazing — I wanted it so badly," she says.

Throughout her career, both on the runway and on screen, she has often had to fight against preconceived casting brackets. It has led her to choose roles that reflect that stoicism: "In theatre, more than movies, I have found myself more drawn to tenacious but very flawed characters." Delevingne is quick to confirm that she, like all of us, is flawed, and taking on the part of Sally is not so much a challenge as a galvanising catharsis. "I feel I can put all my pain and fear into the performance. There are so many layers to her. She is extremely powerful, but my God, is she broken and vulnerable. She's a child — a little girl, and that is the saddest part of it all. I definitely recognise myself in that."
Delevingne confirms that the part, and her experience of the theatre, has been life-changing. "I have never learnt so much, or grown so much," she tells me. "I am taking away so many incredible, valuable things that you cannot get, or even pay for, by doing this job." If Delevingne feels lucky to be a part of Cabaret, it is a luck only matched by those who manage to snag tickets – this is the production everyone is talking about, and Delevingne more than lives up to her role.
Cara Delevingne stars in 'Cabaret' at the Playhouse Theatre until 1 June.
