Gerben Vanden Heuvel leased Toyota RAV-4 in 2018, according to Global News.

In 2021, he bought the car from the dealership after the lease finished.

But on a trip around town, police pulled him over and confiscated his car.

"I was very confused," Vanden Heuvel said to the television station.

"It was me against the system."

When Vanden Heuvel purchased the SUV, he obtained registration documents, insurance, and a bill of sale for the car.

During the transaction, the car was re-registered to a business named Mike's Auto Parts, not Vanden Heuvel, according to the station.

Local police, using a license plate scanner, caught the registration discrepancy, and pulled Vanden Heuvel over.

"As [the police] explained, I didn't own the vehicle," the driver said.

"I wasn't allowed to be in the vehicle anymore."

The RAV-4 was towed from the shoulder and brought to an impound lot.

Vanden Heuvel said the car sat on the lot for 50 days.

Storage and towing charges to the vehicle's removal racked up $4,000 in fees.

After obtaining a legal team and missing five days of work to collect documents, Vanden Heuvel said he was able to get his car back.

He pled to the ministry of transportation through his legal representation, racking up more bills – Vanden Heuvel said the move motivated authorities to get his vehicle back.

"They waved their magic wand and said the vehicle is mine again," he said.

Vanden Heuvel said he was thankful to a family member who was able to spare a vehicle during the debacle.

But the driver is still confused about how the document mix-up happened.

He said he wanted two things to appease the incorrect tow.

"Financial reimbursement would be great," he said.

"But even to find out why it happened, how it happened."
