As resilient off-screen in heradvocacy for cancer awarenessas she was on-screen, the former child star gained recognition for her appearances onLittle House on the PrairieandOur Houseas well as in the 1989 cult classicHeathers. However, it was her breakout role as the ambitious Brenda Walsh on the hit teen dramaBeverly Hills, 90210, that catapulted her into fame. The series ran from 1990 to 2000; however, Doherty left abruptly after season 4. During her time on the show, she formed lifelong friendships with castmates, includingLuke Perry— whodied at age 52on March 4, 2019, aftersuffering a stroke— andJason Priestley. Doherty later rekindled relationships with those she once clashed with, notably costarJennie Garth. Her close bond with the90210family was well-documented, from red carpet appearances and several photo shoots over the years. As we mark the first anniversary of her death, here are some sweet, nostalgic moments shared between Doherty and the cast ofBeverly Hills, 90210. Aaron Rapoport/Corbis/Getty Priestley was perfectly cast as Doherty's on-screen twin — the two share the same piercing light eyes and captivating gaze. The actor opened up about his grief over Doherty's death and finding peace in their final moments together during an episode of Garth'sI Choose Me with Jennie Garthpodcast on April 30, 2025. "Whenever I had the chance to spend time with [Doherty], I made sure that I said all the things that I wanted to say to her," Priestley told fellow90210alum Garth. "So when she did pass away, I feel like her and I had said everything that we needed to say to each other, which I thinkgave me some closure right away, which was good." Doherty previously told PEOPLE that Perry was a "smart, quiet, humble and complex man with a heart of gold and never-ending well of integrity and love," following Perry's death in 2019. She shared that the two had reconnectedduring her "cancer journey"and "picked right back up, albeit older and wiser, butthat connection remained intact." Everett Collection Another behind-the-scenes moment of the on-screen lovebirds. "There is a special kind of love one has for each other when you are experiencing the journey we did on90210and, of course, life in general," Doherty told PEOPLE in 2019. "Luke and I were working on show ideas for us. We wanted to work with each other again and create something special and meaningful for our fans at this stage in our lives." Mark Sennet/Getty In 1991 — the year after the show first premiered — the group posed together on set in this sweet, candid shot. According to Priestley, the cast remains close to this day. "I stay in contact with most of them pretty regularly," he told PEOPLE in February 2025. "None of us are afraid to reach out to our other castmates when we need something, or need their advice on something." Priestley added, "You're bonded together by this incredible experiencethat you shared that not many people have ever been through, so you end up just bonded to those people in a way that's very special." Aaron Rapoport/Corbis/Getty On-screen, Kelly (Garth), Brenda (Doherty), Donna (Spelling) and Andrea (Carteris) all seemed like a close-knit group, but according to Doherty, things weren't always friendly behind the scenes. "I recall when tension started happening on the set, and it was always awesome to me that the boys got along so well," she told Green during a 2024 episode of her podcastLet's Be Clear. "You guys were always very supportive of each other and congratulating each other, andit wasn't necessarily the same with the girls." Over time, with distance from the show, the women were able tomove past the drama and reconnect. Mikel Roberts/Sygma via Getty Despite some ups and downs throughout their relationship, Spelling and Doherty knew how to laugh. In 2024, Spelling shared a fun throwback with her former costaron Instagram, writing, "Very few people can make me laugh 😂 this hard... @theshando you have always been one to do so. Full tilt. Laugh as if no one is watching." Mikel Roberts/Sygma via Getty That sentiment appeared true among the whole cast, who took part in a game of tug-of-war for this beachy photoshoot. Mark Sennet/Getty While Perry played Doherty's love interest on-screen, Priestley played her twin brother (and dated her briefly off-screen from 1990 to 1991), which formed a natural trio that remained close after the show ended. Priestley spoke about how the loss of his two former costars changed his outlook on life. "It hasmade me think about my own mortality. I woke up on my 50th birthday and I realized that I'd already lived most of my life," hetoldThe Mirrorin 2024. Despite Doherty sharing her experience with cancer publicly, the Golden Globe-nominated actor said her death was still shocking. "Her passing hit me hard," Priestley told the publication. "We had an incredible experience working together... it was the day Shannen, Luke and I were shot for the cover ofRolling Stone[in 1992] that I started to understand the impact the show was having." He continued, "I always admired her tenacityand her toughness, so even though I knew she was sick, her actually passing away was a big surprise, and sad for all of us. She fought it for so long and seemed like she was able to manage it ... until she wasn't, unfortunately." "Shannen was a force. And I feel very fortunate that in the last couple years I got to spend quite a bit of time with her. I felt okay about her passing in so much as there was nothing left between us that was unsaid."
