The long and winding road ofThe Beatlesleads to a trifecta of new anniversary artifacts. Theband's "Anthology" collection– documentary, music and book – turns 30 this year and will be celebrated with refreshed editions that feature new and upgraded material. When The Beatles released its eight-part "Anthology" documentary in 1995, which aired three nights on ABC, it was one of the few times the artists themselves, rather than talking heads and outside voices, sat for candid interviews. It was also the start ofPaul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr driving Beatles lore into new generations, which has continued with troves of reissues, lyric books, a long-running(recently closed)Cirque du Soleil show in Las Vegas, Peter Jackson's well-received"The Beatles: Get Back" documentary, and, coming in April 2028,four feature filmsspotlighting the legends. This fall, fans can dive into another sea of gems. Streaming on Disney+ starting Nov. 26, the original eight episodes of "Anthology" – restored and remastered – will be joined by a new Episode Nine. The addition includes unseen behind-the-scenes footage of McCartney, Starr and Harrison coming together in 1994 and 1995 to work on "The Anthology" and reflecting on their lifein The Beatles. The restoration of the film was overseen by Apple Corps' production team, as well as Jackson's crew.Giles Martin, son of Beatles mainstay producer George Martin and a Beatles disciple himself, created new audio mixes for most of the featured music. Giles Martin also worked his remastering magic on songs originally curated by his father in the form of three double albums of rare material that focused on the early versions and evolution of Beatles songs. The set, out Nov. 21, will include a new"Anthology 4,"curated by Giles including 13 previously released demos and session recordings. Also in the collection are new mixes of"Free As a Bird"and "Real Love," the groundbreaking singles from the original "Anthology" that now include de-mixed Lennon vocals overseen by original producerJeff Lynne of ELO. Like The Beatles' 2022 "final" song,"Now and Then,"the songs were crafted from rudimentary demos Lennon recorded in the 1970s with vocals and instrumentals fromMcCartney, Starr and Harrison. The 191-track opus will be available in 12 LP and 8 CD box sets as well as on digital platforms. A25th anniversary editionof "The Beatles Anthology" arrives Oct. 14. Filled with interviews with the foursome, as well as commentary from colleagues including George Martin and Apple Corps head (and school friend of McCartney and Harrison) Neil Aspinall, the 368-page tome also boasts 1,300 photos, documents, artwork and other memorabilia from the band's treasure chests.
