About 5 million swimming pools recalled after deaths of 9 children since 2007New Foto - About 5 million swimming pools recalled after deaths of 9 children since 2007

About 5 million swimming pools that have been linked to nine deaths of children over the last two decades have been recalled by their manufacturers, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Monday morning. In a press release, the CPSC stated that the pools, specifically those 48 inches in height or taller, are equipped with compression straps that serve as footholds, allowing small children to climb into the water unattended, even if a ladder is removed. Nine children who died as a result were aged between 22 months and three years old, the CPSC said. The deaths occurred in California, Texas, Florida, Wisconsin and Missouri between 2007 and 2022. The CPSC press release stated that it was also aware of three other incidents in 2011 and 2012, in which children who gained access to the pool were reported to have previously used the compression straps to enter the pools. The manufacturers are Bestway, based in Hong Kong; Bestway (USA) Inc., based in Arizona; International Ltd, from China; Intex Recreation Corp., in California, and Polygroup North America Inc., based in Texas. They were sold in stores such as Walmart, Target, Sears, Kmart, Lowe's, and Toys "R" Us, as well as through online stores like Amazon. They range in price from $400 to $1,000 and are manufactured in China. Anyone with one of the affected pools is urged to contact the manufacturer to request a free repair kit, which includes a rope that attaches to each of the vertical support poles and wraps around the pool. The rope will "maintain the structural integrity of the pool" instead of the compression strap, which should be cut and removed. Around 266,000 of the pools were also sold in Canada, where they have also been recalled, as per an announcement from Health Canada.

UK, France and 23 other countries say the war in Gaza 'must end now'New Foto - UK, France and 23 other countries say the war in Gaza 'must end now'

LONDON (AP) — Twenty-five countries including Britain, France and a host of European nations issued a joint statement on Monday that puts more pressure on Israel, sayingthe war in Gaza"must end now" and Israel must comply with international law. The foreign ministers of countries including Australia, Canada and Japan said "the suffering of civilians in Gaza has reached new depths." They condemned "the drip feeding of aid and the inhumane killing of civilians, including children, seeking to meet their most basic needs of water and food." The statement described as "horrifying" the deaths of over 800 Palestinians who wereseeking aid, according to the figures released by Gaza's Health Ministry and the U.N. human rights office. "The Israeli government's aid delivery model is dangerous, fuels instability and deprives Gazans of human dignity," said the statement. "The Israeli government's denial of essential humanitarian assistance to the civilian population is unacceptable. Israel must comply with its obligations under international humanitarian law." Gaza's population of more than 2 million Palestinians is in acatastrophic humanitarian crisis, now relying largely on thelimited aidallowed into the territory. Many people have been displaced multiple times. Most of the food supplies Israel has allowed into Gaza go to theGaza Humanitarian Foundation,an American contractor backed by Israel. Since the group's operations began in late May, hundreds of Palestinians have been killed in shootings by Israeli soldiers while on roads heading to the sites, according to witnesses and health officials. The statement's signatories included the foreign ministers of about 20 European countries as well as Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and the EU commissioner for equality, preparedness and crisis management, Hadja Lahbib. Notably absent from the list were the U.S. and Germany. Germany's foreign minister, Johann Wadephul, wrote on X that he spoke with Israeli counterpart Gideon Saar on Monday and expressed the "greatest concern about the catastrophic humanitarian situation" in Gaza as Israel's offensive widens. He called on Israel to implement agreements with the EU to enable humanitarian aid. The signatories called for an immediate ceasefire, adding they are prepared to take action to support a political pathway to peace in the region. The statement from so many of Israel's Western allies deepens its isolation 21 months into its war against Hamas, which has pushed Gaza to the brink of famine, sparked worldwide protests and led to an international arrest warrant against Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. It follows a gradual toughening of allies' language about Israel's actions, which has had little clear effect. In May, Britain, France and Canada issueda joint statementurging Netanyahu's government to stop its military operations in Gaza and threatening "concrete actions" if it didn't. Israel rejects criticism of its wartime conduct, saying its forces have acted lawfully and blaming civilian deaths on Hamas because the militants operate in populated areas. It says it has allowed enough food in to sustain Gaza and accuses Hamas of siphoning much of it off. The United Nations says there is no evidence for widespread diversion of humanitarian aid. Hamas triggered the war when militants stormed into southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing around 1,200 people and taking 251 others hostage. Fifty remain in Gaza, but fewer than half are thought to be alive. Israel's military offensive has killed more than 59,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. Its count doesn't distinguish between militants and civilians but the ministry says more than half of the dead are women and children. The ministry is part of the Hamas government, but the U.N. and other international organizations see it as the most reliable source of data on casualties. Israel and Hamas have been engaged inceasefire talks, but there appears to be no breakthrough and it's not clear whether any truce would bring the war to a lasting halt. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly asserted that expanding Israel's military operations in Gaza will pressure Hamas in negotiations. ___ Associated Press writers Geir Moulson in Berlin and Joseph Krauss in Ottawa, Ontario contributed to this story. ___ Follow AP's war coverage athttps://apnews.com/hub/israel-hamas-war

At around 5:30 p.m. local time on July 19, officials said Luciano and Melina Frattolin were seen on video surveillance in Saratoga Springs, New York. At about 6:30 p.m., the girl spoke to her mother on the phone and told her she and her father were on route back to Canada, police said. Sometime after Melina spoke to her mother on the phone and before Luciano Frattolin reported her missing, he allegedly killed her, according to authorities.
