Health officials in California identified a positive case of plague in a Lake Tahoe resident. El Dorado County officials said in a release that they have notified the California Department of Health that a resident from South Lake Tahoe has plague. The person is recovering at home and is receiving medical care, the El Dorado County release said. No other information about the person or the person's condition was released. Officials believe an infected flea bit the sick person, who was camping in the South Lake Tahoe area, the release said. Officials are investigating. Plague is caused by bacteria that are most often transmitted via bites from fleas that were already carrying them after having picked them up from squirrels, chipmunks and other rodents, according to health officials. Dogs and cats could also bring plague-infected fleas into homes. Symptoms of plague usually include fever, nausea, weakness and swollen lymph nodes, and they show up within two weeks of exposure. It can be treated effectively with antibiotics if it's diagnosed early. Public health officials in California monitor rodents in the area to determine whether they carry plague, the release said. From 2021 to 2024, 41 rodents were found to have been exposed to the plague bacteria. Four additional rodents tested positive in 2025, all identified in the Tahoe Basin. El Dorado County officials noted how rare human cases of plague are, with the last reported case in the South Lake Tahoe area in 2020. Before that, two people tested positive for plague in 2015 after they were exposed in Yosemite National Park. "Plague is naturally present in many parts of California, including higher elevation areas of El Dorado County," said Kyle Fliflet, El Dorado County's acting public health director. "It's important that individuals take precautions for themselves and their pets when outdoors, especially while walking, hiking and or camping in areas where wild rodents are present." To prevent contracting plague, officials warned, people and pets should not touch squirrels, chipmunks or other wild rodents, especially those that are dead or injured. People should not camp near where dead rodents were observed, and they should wear long pants tucked into boots and spray bug repellant to reduce flea exposure.

Israel says it has taken first steps of military operation in Gaza CityNew Foto - Israel says it has taken first steps of military operation in Gaza City

(Reuters) -Israel's military has taken the first steps of a planned operation to take over Gaza City, Israeli military spokesman Brigadier General Effie Defrin said on Wednesday. Following a clash with Hamas south of Khan Younis in the strip on Wednesday, he said: "We will deepen the attack on Hamas in Gaza City, a stronghold of governmental and military terror for the terrorist organization." Defrin said troops had already begun circling the outskirts of Gaza City and Hamas was now a "battered and bruised" guerrilla force. "We have begun the preliminary operations and the first stages of the attack on Gaza City, and already now IDF forces are holding the outskirts of Gaza City," he said. Israel's military called up tens of thousands of reservists on Wednesday in preparation for the expected assault on Gaza City, as the Israeli government considered a new proposal for a ceasefire after nearly two years of war. The call-up signals Israel is pressing ahead with its plan to seize Gaza's biggest urban centre despite international criticism of an operation likely to force the displacement of many more Palestinians. But a military official briefing reporters said reserve soldiers would not report for duty until September, an interval that gives mediators some time to bridge gaps between Palestinian militant group Hamas and Israel over truce terms. Israeli troops clashed on Wednesday with more than 15 Hamas militants who emerged from tunnel shafts and attacked with gunfire and anti-tank missiles near Khan Younis, south of Gaza City, severely wounding one soldier and lightly wounding two others, an Israeli military official said. In a statement, Hamas' Al-Qassam Brigades confirmed carrying out a raid on Israeli troops southeast of Khan Younis and engaging Israeli troops at point-blank range. It said one fighter blew himself up among the soldiers, causing casualties, during an attack that lasted several hours. (Reporting by Howard GollerEditing by Gareth Jones and Philippa Fletcher)

US attorney will no longer bring felony charges against people for carrying rifles or shotguns in DCNew Foto - US attorney will no longer bring felony charges against people for carrying rifles or shotguns in DC

WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal prosecutors in the nation's capital will no longer bring felony charges against people for possessing rifles or shotguns in the District of Columbia, according to a new policy adopted by the leader of the nation's largest U.S. attorney's office. That office will continue to pursue charges when someone is accused of using a shotgun or rifle in a violent crime or has a criminal record that makes it illegal to have a firearm. Local authorities in Washington can prosecute people for illegally possessing unregistered rifles and shotguns. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirrosaid in a statement that the change is based on guidance from the Justice Department and the Office of Solicitor General and conforms with two Supreme Court decisions on gun rights. Pirro, a former Fox News host, has been a vocal critic of local officials' crime-fighting efforts since Republican PresidentDonald Trumpinstalled her in office in May. Her policy shift means federal prosecutors will not purse charges under the D.C. law that made it illegal to carry rifles or shotguns, except in limited cases involving permit holders. The change also overlaps with Trump's declaration of acrime emergencyin the city, flooding the streets of Washington with patrols of hundreds of federal agents and National Guard members. The White House says 76 firearms have been seized since the crackdown started this month. The new policy also coves large-capacity magazines, but it does not apply to handguns. "We will continue to seize all illegal and unlicensed firearms, and to vigorously prosecute all crimes connected with them," Pirro said, adding that she and Trump "are committed to prosecuting gun crime." Pirro said a blanket ban on possessing shotguns and rifles violates theSupreme Court'sruling in 2022 that struck down a New York gun law and held that Americans have a right to carry firearms in public for self-defense. She also pointed to the high court's 2008 decision inDistrict of Columbia v. Hellerstriking down the city's ban on handguns in the home.

Michelle then laughed as she recalled how Malia was always eager to spend time with Barack, 64. "When Malia was a teenager, it wasn't that she was going out any less or doing anything differently," she said. "She would tell me, 'I'm going out this weekend, but I'm going to go in and give dad like 15 minutes.'" In fact, Malia and Barack bonded over discussing the political climate. "She'd go into the Treaty Room and be like, 'Tell me about Syria,'" Michelle shared, adding that Barack would always end their time together by saying, "I just had an amazing conversation with Malia." When it came to Sasha, she wasn't as focused on pleasing Barack. Michelle explained that Sasha's lack of interest in bonding with her father created a struggle for the former president. The former Food Network star's television appearance comes ahead ofCanceled: The Paula Deen Story,a documentary premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in September that examinesthe scandal that shatteredher multimillion-dollar empire more than a decade ago. Deen was on the Food Network for 11 yearsbefore she was fired in 2013, as a result of her admission to using a racial slurin a sworn deposition. The deposition was part of a lawsuit filed by Lisa Jackson, a former manager of one of Paula's restaurants, Uncle Bubba's Seafood and Oyster House. A federal judge in Georgia dismissed the lawsuitafter a settlement was reached. During the Aug. 20segment with host Steve Doocyfilmed in her kitchen in Savannah, Ga., Deen, 78, reflected on her life, including a 20-year battle with agoraphobia. "I self-diagnosed myself after watchingThe Phil Donahue Show, with these people that couldn't leave their house," she recalled in the interview, which aired on Wednesday, Aug. 20. "And I considered what I would call a functioning sometimes-agoraphobic." "You're so afraid someone's going to hurt you," she said. "I had lost my daddy when he was just 40. He was the star of my life. And then my mother, my best friend, I lost her at 44, four years later. I had a 16-year-old brother to try to finish raising and I had two babies under 3." Deen welcomed two sons with her first husband, Jimmy Deen: Jamie, born in 1967, and Bobby, born in 1970. She has been married to her second husband, Michael Groover, since 2004. That's what you're supposed to be asking God for, to be able to accept the serenity to accept the things you couldn't change, the courage to change the things that you could, and dear lord, please give me the sense to know the difference between those two things.'" Doocy then said the story was part of Paula's upcoming documentary, which prompted her to share her feelings on the film. "My children and I were a little leery at first," she revealed. "But then we decided — let me tell you something, Steve. I thought I was going to die of a broken heart. And I said I couldn't let myself fall back into that terrible [agoraphobia]. But I had, like, 5 and a half, 6 million people come in on my Facebook and put their arms around me. And without y'all, I would not have survived." Deen has lost various partnerships in the wake of her controversy, but has since made other television appearances. Daniel Boczarski/Getty In 2015, she joined the cast ofDancing with the Starsas a contestant for the show's 21st season. Thank you for all the great memories and for your loyalty over the past 36 years," Paula wrote in a statement, also signed by Jamie and Bobby.
