©Universal/courtesy Everett Collection Mamma Mia!originated as a jukebox musical in the West End in 1999 before the show made its way to Broadway in 2001. The film adaptation came in July 2008, with a star-studded cast at the helm. In the movie,Meryl Streepportrays Donna Sheridan, the manager of the hotel Villa Donna in Greece, and mother toAmanda Seyfried's character Sophie, who is set to get married to her fiancé, Sky. Donna hosts Sophie's wedding with the help of her friends, Tanya (Christine Baranski) and Rosie (Julie Walters), while Sophie cooks up a plan of her own. In an effort to discover the identity of her father, she invites three of her mom's exes to her wedding without Donna's knowledge: Sam Carmichael (Pierce Brosnan), Bill Anderson (Stellan Skarsgård) and Harry Bright (Colin Firth). Mamma Mia!was a box office success, earning $610 million worldwide, perBox Office Mojo. It went on to spawn a sequel in 2018,Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, which followed a young Donna (Lily James), Tanya (Jessica Keenan Wynn) and Rosie (Alexa Davies) after their graduation from Oxford University. All the while, in the present day, Sophie is pregnant and preparing to reopen her mom's hotel after her death. From mishaps on set to the real-life bonds the cast formed, here are 9 behind-the-scenes facts you didn't know aboutMamma Mia!. ©Universal/courtesy Everett Collection While Brosnan has mastered the art of drama throughout his career, singing didn't come naturally tothe former Bond star. During a May 2025 interview withVanity Fair, headmitted to being "terrified" to sing inMamma Mia!, though his costars Firth and Skarsgård helped alleviate some of his fears. Reflecting on the recording of "SOS," Brosnan called it "a warhorse of a song." He explained, "It's not an easy song to sing, and I was mildly terrified. I remember going out to Air Studios to record the songs." The actor continued, "The only thing that kind of gave me some solace and some peace was to see Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgård look as equally freaked out as I was as we sat down with Benny [Andersson] and Björn [Ulvaeus] and went straight into recording the songs." This gave Skarsgård the same amount of comfort, with the actor tellingVanity Fairin February 2024, "It was absurd to ask me to be in a musical. I can't sing, I can't dance. And then I saw it was also Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth, and they can't sing and dance either, so I felt a little safer there." ©Universal/courtesy Everett Collection There's no shortage of entertainment for viewers when it comes toMamma Mia!and as it turns out, the cast had just as much filming the movie, too. Baranski opened up to PEOPLE in March 2025 about her experience filming the movie, explaining that it was just as "wonderful" behind-the-scenes as it was to see the final product. When asked what her favorite memory was of filming, the actress explained, "All of it. All of it. I mean, every night, and when we'd finish filming, we'd all go out together." Baranski added, "We would have the most wonderful time. It's the most wonderful group of people. We would all do it again because it was just a love affair." Amanda Seyfried/Instagram Ain't no party like aMamma Mia!wrap party. In March 2025, nearly two decades after the first movie, Seyfried shared somebehind-the-scenes details about the movie's wrap party, including a hilarious moment with her grandmother. "That was 18 years ago, I can't even do the math. But that wrap party specifically, I was drunk. Everybody was," she explained to PEOPLE. "My grandmother was at that wrap party and she was slightly drunk. She and my mom were there visiting. They always came everywhere I went and she lived until she was 99." ©Universal/courtesy Everett Collection Seyfried and Cooper, who portrayed the character Sky, met while they filmedMamma Mia!and then dated for several years until their split in 2011. Seyfried eventually met her now husband,Thomas Sadoski, while working on the off-Broadway playThe Way We Get Byin 2015. The couplemarried in 2017and havewelcomed two children together, Nina and Thomas. When Seyfried and Cooper both returned for the 2018Mamma Mia!sequel, Sadoskihad some thoughts about their on-screen reunion. Speaking toThe Mirrorin July 2018, Seyfried shared, "I think he has the same kind of issues that I would have if we were hanging out with his ex-girlfriend from long ago." "I think it's always like, 'I'm so in love with this person, so that person must be so in love with her too,' " she added. "I'd guess he assumed Dominic is in love with me the way he's in love with me. And it's just not the case, it's sweet. I'd rather he be jealous than completely fine with it." In addition to Seyfried's husband,Cher also had an opinionabout the actress' former relationship. Cooper toldVanity Fairin July 2018, "She took one look at me and didn't trust me at all—and told me so herself, which I laughed out loud at. After Amanda made it clear that we used to, once upon a time, be together, Cher said [to Seyfried], 'You dodged a bullet there.' " ©Universal/courtesy Everett Collection While singing didn't come naturally to the group of actors playing Sophie's potential fathers, neither did dancing. Baranskispoke about her experience onMamma Mia!during a May 2025 episode ofThe Late Show with Stephen Colbert, recalling that Skarsgård "hated" dancing in one particular scene. "We finally went down the hill and 'Dancing Queen' and landed on the dock," she explained. "Then it was the end of the number. The camera would move around, and it usually would avoid Stellan. Then finally, the director said, 'Stellan, okay, it's time for your close up. You have got to do the moves now. You have simply got to do the moves.' " Despite allegedly letting out "a string of expletives" and insisting he couldn't complete the task, Skarsgård did the choreography. Much like their camaraderie when it came to singing, Firth and Brosnanweren't far behind with their hatred for dancing, either. Baranski joked toVulturein February 2022, "Just to get them to sing the song and put one foot in front of another and raise a glass of beer together, it was like rocket science." ©Universal/courtesy Everett Collection There was only one name Brosnan needed to hear in order to sign onto the project: Meryl Streep. Brosnan spoke toVanity Fairin April 2025 about how the opportunity forMamma Mia!came to him. At the time, he shared, "My agent called me and said 'You've got a job with Meryl Streep.' I thought, 'Oh, my heavens, this is magnificent. This is incredible. Meryl Streep? They're really taking me seriously.' " "He said 'Yeah, it'sMamma Mia!' "Brosnan recalled. "I said, 'What?Mamma Mia!the musical?' He said, 'Yeah.' I said, 'Great. Where is it? How much?' And it was Greece." Brosnan admitted toVoguein September 2023 that the type of project wasn't something that would have typically been on his radar, telling the publication, "A musical was the last thing I had in mind for my career, so I was completely bowled over by the offer." He clarified, "But I was also over the moon to get to work with Meryl. Then, of course, I realized that meant I'd have to sing." Courtesy Everett Collection For yearsacross social media, fans have been convinced that the cast ofMamma Mia!were drunk on set due to ouzo, a Greek aperitif. However, Baranski set the record straight during a December 2020 interview withCollider, telling the outlet, "No, there wasn't ever Ouzo on set." "It was that Pierce Brosnan wanted to take us all to dinner one night near the end of the shoot – the firstMamma Mia!– and we had dinner and then we went to hear some jazz music somewhere," she explained. "And we started drinking this – it's not called Ouzo – it's Cipro or something. But that sounds like the antibiotic." The outlet confirmed the cast was drinking the spirit Tsipouro, not the antibiotic Cipro, as Baranski added, "None of us knew it, but this thing that we were drinking as though it was just really good tequila, gives you this hangover." "After, the next day, if you have even a little bit of water, it reactivates the effect of this drink," Baranski said. "I remember I didn't have to work the next day, but I had to keep reading the same paragraph ... I kept reading and rereading and nothing would stick ... whatever we were drinking, whoa, powerful stuff." ©Universal/courtesy Everett Collection Seyfried and Streep had a special bond to help portray their mother-daughter relationship on-screen. Speaking to theDaily Mailin November 2008, the director Phyllida Lloyd recalled a moment fromMamma Mia!when the actresses were singing "Slipping Through My Fingers," calling it a "very special song for all of us." "There was great tenderness between Meryl and Amanda and they both identified strongly with the scene," she explained. "We talked about all the things that might happen when a mother and daughter help each other get ready for a wedding, and I just let them improvise as Meryl painted Amanda's toenails." Streep also had a suggestion to make the scene even more powerful, with Lloyd adding, "It was Meryl who suggested that Amanda should sit on the chair with her. It was incredibly touching to watch them doing this scene." Photoshot/Everett Collection ABBA members Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson not only composed the music forMamma Mia!the musical, but they also made cameos in both films. DuringMamma Mia!,Andersson appeared as a piano player on a boat during the "Dancing Queen" scene. Ulvaeus appeared during the end credits as a Greek god while the cast performed the tune "Waterloo." Colbert is latest casualty of late-night TV's fade-outNew Foto - Colbert is latest casualty of late-night TV's fade-out

By Dawn Chmielewski and Lisa Richwine LOS ANGELES (Reuters) -Late-night television had been fighting for its survival even before "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" was canceled this week. The announced end of one of the most popular broadcast late-night shows, days after host Stephen Colbert accused the network owner of bribing President Donald Trump to approve a merger, drew cries of political foul play from liberal politicians, artists and entertainers. "Stephen Colbert, an extraordinary talent and the most popular late-night host, slams the deal. Days later, he's fired. Do I think this is a coincidence? NO," Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, an independent, wrote on X. CBS executives said in a statement that dropping the show was "purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night. It is not related in any way to the show's performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount." Whether or not politics were at play, the late-night format has been struggling for years, as viewers increasingly cut the cable TV cord and migrate to streaming. Younger viewers, in particular, are more apt to find amusement on YouTube or TikTok, leaving smaller, aging TV audiences and declining ad revenues. Americans used to religiously turn on Johnny Carson or Jay Leno before bed, but nowadays many fans prefer to watch quick clips on social media at their convenience. Advertising revenue for Colbert's show has dropped 40% since 2018 - the financial reality that CBS said prompted the decision to end "The Late Show" in May 2026. One former TV network executive said the program was a casualty of the fading economics of broadcast television. Fifteen years ago, a popular late-night show like "The Tonight Show" could earn $100 million a year, the executive said. Recently, though, "The Late Show" has been losing $40 million a year, said a person briefed on the matter. The show's ad revenue plummeted to $70.2 million last year from $121.1 million in 2018, according to ad tracking firm Guideline. Ratings for Colbert's show peaked at 3.1 million viewers on average during the 2017-18 season, according to Nielsen data. For the season that ended in May, the show's audience averaged 1.9 million. 'SHOCKED BUT NOT SURPRISED' Comedians like Colbert followed their younger audiences online, with the network releasing clips to YouTube or TikTok. But digital advertising did not make up for the lost TV ad revenue, the source with knowledge of the matter said. The TV executive said reruns of a hit prime-time show like "Tracker" would leave CBS with "limited costs, and the ratings could even go up." "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" is just the latest casualty of the collapse of one of television's most durable formats. When "The Late Late Show" host James Corden left in 2023, CBS opted not to hire a replacement. The network also canceled "After Midnight" this year, after host Taylor Tomlinson chose to return to full-time stand-up comedy. But the end came at a politically sensitive time. Paramount Global, the parent company of CBS, is seeking approval from the Federal Communications Commission for an $8.4 billion merger with Skydance Media. This month Paramount agreed to settle a lawsuit filed by Trump over a "60 Minutes" interview with his 2024 Democratic challenger, Kamala Harris. Colbert called the payment "a big fat bribe" two days before he was told his show was canceled. Many in the entertainment industry and Democratic politicians have called for probes into the decision, including the Writers Guild of America and Senator Edward Markey, who asked Paramount Chair Shari Redstone whether the Trump administration had pressured the company. Paramount has the right to fire Colbert, including for his political positions, Markey said, but "if the Trump administration is using its regulatory authority to influence or otherwise pressure your company's editorial decisions, the public deserves to know." A spokesperson for Redstone declined comment. "It's a completely new world that artists and writers and journalists are living in, and it's scary," said Tom Nunan, a veteran film and TV producer who is co-head of the producers program at UCLA's School of Theater, Film and Television. "When the news came in about Colbert, we were shocked but not surprised." (Reporting by Dawn Chmielewski and Lisa Richwine; Editing by Peter Henderson, William Mallard and Diane Craft)

Gabbard threatens Obama officials with criminal referral over 2016 election assessmentNew Foto - Gabbard threatens Obama officials with criminal referral over 2016 election assessment

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard on Friday threatened to refer Obama administration officials to the Justice Department for prosecution over the intelligence assessment of Russia's 2016 election interference, in the latest example of officials going after perceived enemies of President Donald Trump. Gabbard declassified documents Friday that she claimed were evidence the Obama administration's intelligence officials "manufactured and politicized intelligence to lay the groundwork" for the FBI's Russia investigation into Trump. In apost, Gabbard said she was "turning over all documents to the DOJ for criminal referral," though she didn't specify whether she was referring any specific officials. A criminal referral does not necessarily mean the Justice Department will investigate or prosecute. Earlier this month, however, CNNreportedthat the FBI is investigating former CIA Director John Brennan and former FBI Director James Comey for possible false statements to Congress following a referral from the current CIA Director John Ratcliffe, which was also related to the intelligence assessment on Russia's election interference. Both Gabbard and Ratcliffe declassified documents this month as part of an effort to undermine the intelligence community's 2017 assessment that Russia interfered in the 2016 US election and tried to help Trump defeat Hillary Clinton – a conclusion that contributed to Trump's longstanding distrust of the intelligence community. Other reviews did not discover such issues, however, including a bipartisan 2020 Senate Intelligence Committee report thatsupported the intelligence community's assessmentof Russia's interference in the 2016 election. Democrats criticized Gabbard's release Friday as an attempt to "rewrite history." "The Senate Intelligence Committee conducted a bipartisan investigation reviewing hundreds of thousands of documents and interviewing witnesses over several years. The unanimous, bipartisan conclusion was that Russia interfered in the 2016 election to benefit Donald Trump," Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia, the top Democrat on the committee, said in a statement. "This is just another example of the DNI trying to cook the books, rewrite history, and erode trust in the intelligence agencies she's supposed to be leading." Connecticut Rep. Jim Himes, the top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, said in a statement, "Every legitimate investigation, including the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee investigation, found no evidence of politicization and endorsed the findings of the 2016 Intelligence Community Assessment." The FBI's criminal investigation into the Trump campaign's ties to Russia began in 2016 and stretched into the first Trump administration. It then became the subject of investigations by the Justice Department's inspector general and by special counsel John Durham, who was appointed by Attorney General Bill Barr to also examine the handling of intelligence that led to the Trump-Russia probe. The Durham probe ended with no finding of wrongdoing in the handling of the intelligence, but it did end with the indictment of three people, including a former FBI lawyer who pleaded guilty to falsifying information in a surveillance warrant request targeting a Trump campaign aide. CNN's Shania Shelton contributed to this report. For more CNN news and newsletters create an account atCNN.com

Dozens arrested around the UK at protests to support proscribed group Palestine ActionNew Foto - Dozens arrested around the UK at protests to support proscribed group Palestine Action

LONDON (AP) — British police arrested dozens of people for supporting a banned Palestinian rights organization on Saturday as protests over the government's decision to outlaw the group continued for a third weekend. Waving placards reading "I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Action," demonstrators gathered in London, Manchester, Edinburgh, Bristol, Londonderry and Truro. The government moved to ban Palestine Action after activists broke into a Royal Air Force base atBrize Nortonin Oxfordshire on June 20 to protest British military support for Israel'swar with Hamas. The activists sprayed red paint into the jet engines of two huge tanker planes and caused further damage with crowbars. Parliament passed legislation earlier this monthdesignatingPalestine Action as a terrorist organization, meaning membership in the group or support for its actions are now punishable by up to 14 years in prison. Police announced an increased presence in central London ahead of the protests, saying they would protect the right to peaceful protest but would act swiftly if demonstrators violated the law. "Those who see this as an opportunity to test the limits of the law by expressing support for Palestine Action, whether at a standalone protest or as part of the Palestine Coalition protest, will likely be committing an offense and will very likely be arrested," Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan said in a statement released Thursday. Supporters of Palestine Action are challenging the ban, with the High Court in London scheduled to consider the case on Monday, according to the campaign group Defend Our Juries, which organized Saturday's protests. Almost 100 protesters were arrested around the country on Saturday, including 55 in London, Defend Our Juries said in a statement. In London, police officers surrounded demonstrators who had gathered at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi that stands in a park across the street from the Houses of Parliament. Officers confiscated placards and searched the bags of those arrested. Video posted online showed police carrying an elderly man away from the demonstration in the Cornish city of Truro as he shouted, "I oppose genocide."

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has identified the three deputies killed in Friday's training facility explosion at anEast Los Angeles Countytraining site. The devastating explosion has been considered one of the agency's deadliest internal tragedies in years. The blast happened just after 7:30 a.m., claiming the lives of Deputies Joshua Kelley-Eklund, Victor Lemus, and William Osborn. All three men were assigned to the Special Enforcement Bureau's Arson Explosives Detail and were described as brave men who served with honor, courage, and an unwavering commitment to protecting and serving the community, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said. "There are no words to express the pain and sorrow we feel," saidSheriff Robert Luna."These heroes represented the best of our Department, exemplifying courage, integrity, and selfless service. This is not only a heartbreaking loss for their families, but for all of us." Authorities Obtain Search Warrant Related To Explosion That Killed 3 Deputies At La County Facility The fallen deputies had a combined 74 years of service, according to Luna. Read On The Fox News App The LASD released a statement Friday evening highlighting the service histories of the deputies and each showed a long record of dedication, specialized training, and service across high-risk assignments. Detective Steven Kelley-Eklund joined LASD in 2006 but served at multiple facilities before becoming a Field Training Officer at South LA Station. Kelley-Elund was promoted to Detective with the Narcotics Bureau in 2016 and worked with major investigations and arrests. He became a certified Arson and Explosive Investigator in 2022. He is survived by his wife, Jessica, and their seven children. Human Remains Discovered Days After Devastating California Fireworks Facility Explosion Detective Victor Lemus began his career at LASD in 2003 where he served at Twin Towers and Century Station. Lemus reportedly excelled as a Senior Training Officer and Detective. He was also touted as a decorated Baker to Vegas runner and a K-9 handler.  He joined the Arson and Explosives Unit in 2023. He is survived by his wife, Detective Nancy Lemus, their three daughters, and several family members also serving with LASD. Detective William Osborn served in patrol, investigations, and training roles across the county and graduated in 1992. He was purportedly a longtime detective with a deep passion for investigative work.  Osborn joined the Arson and Explosive Unit in 2019 and was well-known for being a mentor and his expertise. He was also a trusted leader in the bomb technician community. LASD officials told Fox News Digital that the same deputies responded to a call Thursday at a complex in Santa Monica where they assisted the local police departmentin seizing explosives. The incident is still under investigation, and it is unclear if the deputies were examining the explosives at the time of the blast. LASD say homicide detectives are in the process of obtaining a search warrant for the Santa Monica location and "out of the abundance of caution," the LAPD bomb squad, L.A. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), andFederal Bureau of Investigation(FBI) in Los Angeles will search the location for any potential explosive materials. "At this time, it is not determined if the devices found yesterday have any correlation to today's critical incident," officials wrote in a statement to Fox Digital. "Santa Monica PD is assisting the Sheriff's Department in this incident and have evacuated the residents in the complex. They are in the process of locating a shelter for displaced residents." Details regarding a memorial service for the deputies will be released soon, according to LASD. "The family asks for privacy and compassion during this tragic time. The Department will continue to support the families, and our personnel throughout this difficult time," LASD said.
