LONDON (AP) — An electrical substation fire thatshut down Heathrow Airport, canceling more than 1,300 flights, was caused by a preventable technical fault identified almost seven years earlier, a report found Wednesday. Europe's busiest air hub shut for about 18 hours in March aftera fireknocked out one of the three electrical substations that supply Heathrow with power. More than 200,000 passengers had journeys disrupted. Counterterrorism police initially led the investigation into the fire, which came as authorities across Europe girded againstsabotage backed by Russia. Though authorities quickly ruled out vandalism or sabotage, the fire's huge impact raised concern about the resilience of Britain's energy system to accidents, natural disasters or attacks. The governmentordered an investigationinto "any wider lessons to be learned on energy resilience for critical national infrastructure." The report by the National Energy System Operator said that an "elevated moisture reading" had been found in oil samples at the substation in west London in July 2018, but action wasn't taken to replace electrical insulators known as bushings. It said that the March 20 blaze was caused by a "catastrophic failure" in one of the transformers, "most likely caused by moisture entering the bushing causing a short circuit" that ignited the oil. Energy Secretary Ed Miliband said that the findings were "deeply concerning." He said that energy industry regulator Ofgem had opened an investigation into whether the substation's operator, National Grid Electricity Transmission, had breached its license conditions.

Diddy jury to keep deliberating after reaching deadlock on most serious chargeNew Foto - Diddy jury to keep deliberating after reaching deadlock on most serious charge

Jurors in the trial of Sean "Diddy" Combs will keep deliberating after they reached a partial verdict, but found themselves unable to agree on the most serious charge faced by the hip-hop mogul. At the federal court in New York, the 12 jurors said they had agreed on four of the five counts. Those verdicts have not been made public. But jurors were unable to decide on the racketeering charge, which carries a possible life prison term. Mr Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to all the charges against him, which include two counts of sex trafficking and two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution, as well as the single count of racketeering. Deliberations will resume on Wednesday morning. The atmosphere in court on Tuesday was tense - as the rapper sat with head bowed, hands folded in his lap. His lawyers occasionally put their arms around him. Over the past two months, the jury has heard from 34 witnesses, including ex-girlfriends, former employees of Mr Combs, male escorts and federal agents. Mr Combs is charged with racketeering conspiracy, two charges of sex trafficking and two charges of transportation to engage in prostitution. At around 16:30 EDT on Tuesday (20:30 GMT), the jury announced they had reached a verdict on four of the five counts, after two days of deliberations. The panel said they could not come to an agreement on the racketeering charge because jurors on both sides had opinions that were unmovable. Judge Arun Subramanian heard arguments from both the prosecution and the rapper's defence attorneys on how to proceed, before urging the jurors to keep trying to come to a unanimous decision. Their verdicts on the other four counts were not disclosed. The prosecution urged the judge to use an Allen charge, which is a set of instructions given to a hung jury to press its members to reach a unanimous decision. Allen charges are controversial, as some believe they can put undue pressure on juries, forcing them to change their stances or cave to peer pressure - especially when their opinion is in the minority. As well as returning to court on Wednesday, the jurors could potentially continue deliberating on 3 July - when the court is normally closed ahead of the 4 July public holiday. The panel's unanimous decision on most of the counts after less than two days of deliberations could be a good sign for prosecutors, Robert Mintz, a criminal defence lawyer and former federal prosecutor told the BBC. But to gain a conviction on the racketeering charge, prosecutors needed to prove that Mr Combs established a criminal enterprise - a co-ordinated plan between the musician and at least one other person to commit at least two crimes over a span of several years. "That was always going to be the most challenging charge for prosecutors to get a conviction on," Mr Mintz said. "It's a very complicated charge, used typically in the past in organised crime prosecution and so it's not surprising that that is the one charge giving the jury the most difficulty." If convicted on that charge, Mr Combs faces up to life in prison. He faces another statutory minimum sentence of 15 years if he is found guilty of sex trafficking. Meanwhile, transportation for purposes of prostitution carries a maximum sentence of 10 years. The defendant has also gone by the names Puffy, Puff Daddy, P Diddy, Love and Brother Love. He used his stature in the industry to found his successful Sean John clothing line and starred in multiple reality TV shows, including one where contestants competed to become part of his band. In 2023, he released his fifth record The Love Album: Off The Grid and earned his first solo nomination at the Grammy awards. He was also named a Global Icon at the MTV Awards. A 'fake trial': Sean 'Diddy' Combs' lawyers make final arguments to jurors What Diddy sex-trafficking trial jury will need to consider What is Sean 'Diddy' Combs charged with and how long will his trial last?

(Corrects spelling of MuseSteamer in paragraph 4) BEIJING (Reuters) -China's Baidu on Wednesday launched an AI-driven video generator for businesses as well as a major upgrade to its search engine. The image-to-video model, called MuseSteamer, is capable of generating videos up to 10 seconds long and comes in three versions - Turbo, Pro and Lite. Over the past year, artificial intelligence heavyweights like OpenAI and big global tech companies have been expanding beyond chatbots to text-to-video or image-to-video generators. In China, ByteDance, Tencent and Alibaba have also launched models. While many rival products, including OpenAI's Sora, target consumers with subscription plans, Baidu's MuseSteamer is aimed only at business users and a consumer app is not yet available. The search engine overhaul includes a redesigned search box that accepts longer queries and supports voice and image-based searches. The platform also displays more targeted content using Baidu's AI technology. Baidu has faced increasing pressure as AI-based chatbots such as ByteDance's Doubao and Tencent's Yuanbao become more popular. (Reporting by Liam Mo and Brenda Goh; Editing by Edwina Gibbs)

ABB expands robot line-up for China to tap mid-sized customersNew Foto - ABB expands robot line-up for China to tap mid-sized customers

By John Revill ZURICH (Reuters) -ABB is launching three new families of factory robots designed specially for China, the Swiss engineering company said on Wednesday, as it aims to benefit from rising demand for automation among mid-sized companies. The machines will work in sectors like electronics, food and beverage, and metals, handling tasks like polishing and placing products around production lines, the Zurich-based company said. Sales in China's so-called mid-market section — where robots perform less complex tasks, such as pick-and-place operations, packaging, or basic inspection — are expected to grow at 8% per year over the next three years when measured by value, ABB said, much faster than the global industry in recent years. China's mid-market robotics segment has been increasing its levels of automation to tackle labour shortages and as the technology becomes easier to operate. "With artificial intelligence, the robots are easier to use and therefore more appealing to customers who did not have them in the past," Sami Atiya, president of ABB's robotics & discrete automation business area, said. ABB's new family of robots includes the Lite+, PoWa and IRB1200 robots, whose arms can carry different load sizes and work at different speeds according to customers' needs. One of the robots can be operational within 60 minutes of being unpacked, the company said. It can be programmed by speaking to them or by watching the tasks they are due to perform. The robots will cost from around $20,000 to over $100,000, it added. China is the world's biggest robotics market, installing 51% of new robots worldwide in 2023 according to the International Federation of Robotics (IFR). China is ABB's biggest robots market, representing around 30% of its robots business. Atiya did not think the threat of U.S. tariffs on China would affect demand for robots because of both the strength of its internal market and labour shortages. The robots will be made at ABB's new factory in Shanghai. The Swiss company earlier this year announced its plan to spin off its robotics division, which competes with Japan's FANUC Corp, Yaskawa and Germany's Kuka. Atiya said the spin-off was still on track to conclude by the second quarter of 2026, but declined to comment on its potential valuation, or if ABB had been approached by buyers. "We have to entertain anyone who is interested in a sale, but clearly our target is the spin-off," he added. (Reporting by John Revill; Editing by Harikrishnan Nair)
