Heat's Jovic exits game against Raptors with elbow injury

MIAMI (AP) — Miami Heat forward Nikola Jovic walked off the court with a splint-like device over his right arm after he took a hard foul while driving to the basket late in the first quarter of a game against the Toronto Raptors on Monday night.

The Heat later said it was an elbow injury.

Jovic entered the game 12 seconds before the injury when he took a pass and was hit high by Toronto's Collin Murray-Boyles. Jovic fell hard to the floor and after being tended to by the Heat training staff, he exited for the locker room for additional evaluation.

The 22-year-old Jovic is in his fourth season with the Heat, who made the native of Serbia their first-round draft choice in 2022.

NBA trade market: Which buyers could be in play for Giannis Antetokounmpo?

As NBA trade season approaches,we looked at sellers last week, and now it's time to look at some teams that could end up being buyers before the Feb. 5 trade deadline.

Detroit Pistons

They are 20-5 and sitting atop the Eastern Conference, but this team is in dire need of more shooting and a firm secondary scoring option.

Lauri Markkanen makes a lot of sense, and facilitating a deal for him wouldn't be particularly difficult, at least through the lens of matching salaries or attaching draft equity, because the Pistons control their future draft assets.

The beauty of Detroit's flexibility is it can go in a bunch of different ways and it can also put Jaden Ivey on the table in negotiations. But the Pistons do need to move now, as Jalen Duren is up for a new contract next summer.

New York Knicks

So, this is complicated.

The Knicks should be looking for whatever upgrade they can get their hands on to improve their depth and make a real Finals run with the East being as open as it is.

However, they're so short on assets and less than $150,000 away from the second apron, so it's almost unrealistic to expect them to do something major. That doesn't mean they shouldn't try, though.

Orlando Magic

This is a weird team, and the pieces may not all fit together. But that's all the more reason to try to make a real upgrade, if one is there for the taking.

The contract of Tyus Jones ($7 million, expiring) could bring the Magic something, but their first apron buffer is at just $1.2 million, which in the NBA is peanuts.

As such, look for the Magic to package Jones with Jett Howard to see if they can extract a larger contract elsewhere.

Oklahoma City Thunder

They can get just about anyone they want to, but given the fact that they're as good as they are right now, they can easily choose to stand pat.

Denver Nuggets

They improved their depth last summer and remain $2.8 million under the second apron, which does give them some flexibility for the trade deadline.

More than likely, they'll stick with their main core and instead make moves around the margin.

They're not in bad shape by any stretch, so we'll see what — if anything — they cook up.

Houston Rockets

It was tempting to leave them out, simply due to the Fred VanVleet injury, but at 16-6 and with Kevin Durant on the roster, that would be indefensible.

They need a point guard. Full stop. They probably won't be able to acquire a big-name player, but they could attempt to use VanVleet's $25 million salary to facilitate something.

Going into the rest of the season short on playmaking guards wouldn't be advisable.

San Antonio Spurs

Victor Wembanyama will, more than likely, sign a full-max contract extension next offseason, which means the Spurs are on the clock to round out the roster as they see fit.

They have multiple expiring contracts in the form of Harrison Barnes and Kelly Olynyk ($32.4 million in total), a plethora of draft picks and plenty of young players, all of which could be combined to make a push for another star — such as Milwaukee's Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Whichever player the Spurs identify, they have enough juice to do something big if they want to.

Los Angeles Lakers

When you have a team with Luka Dončić, you're almost always in a state of competitiveness, meaning you're automatically looking to buy and add pieces around him.

While the Lakers will more than likely wait to do something big during the offseason, that doesn't mean they won't be on the lookout for something that makes sense.

They have expiring contracts, but very little draft equity and are short on young players. That's a tough mix, which could lead them to try their luck in free agency instead.

Biff Poggi tells signees and parents Michigan hopes to hire a coach by end of month, AP source says

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Michigan interim football coach Biff Poggi had a Zoom call with the program's signees and their parents just hours afterSherrone Moorewas fired last week, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Monday.

Poggi told the players and their parents thatathletic director Warde Manuelhoped to havea new coachhired by the end of the month, said the person, who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to share details from the call.

Moore's firing leftthe No. 18 Wolverinesscrambling to retain recruits and give current players reasons to stay out of the transfer portal.

That's going to be quite a challenge.

Michiganhas begun practicing for its bowl game with Poggi and assistants, none of whom know if they will be a part of the team's staff in 2026.

The Wolverines announced less than two weeks ago that 27 prospects signed commitments to play football for the maize and blue and the class wasranked No. 11 by 247Sports.

Two of those players, however, asked for and were granted their release by the school.

Matt Ludwig, a four-star tight end from Montana, has alreadyswitched his commitmentto Texas Tech and Bear McWhorter, a three-star offensive lineman from Georgia, opened up his recruitment last week.

"In light of recent events, I've made the very difficult decision to withdraw,"McWhorter postedFriday on Instagram.

McWhorter made his decision Monday, committing toAuburn.

Moorewas fired Wednesday after the school said an investigation uncovered evidence of his inappropriate relationship with a staffer. He was laterjailedfor two nights and charged with three crimes.

While a search firm helps Michigan quickly look for a new coach, other colleges are taking advantage of the opportunity to make offers to the Wolverines' signees because they're in a 30-day window to potentially get released.

"Every day that a new coach isn't in place, there's a risk in more players asking for their release and current players planning to go in the portal," Allen Trieu, 247Sports national recruiting analyst, said in a telephone interview. "Time is of essence, if the primary goal is to keep the recruiting class in place.

"Those families are waiting with bated breath — as many are who are invested in Michigan football — to see who the next coach is going to be."

Current players, including starting quarterback Bryce Underwood, will have a chance to enter the transfer portal between Jan. 2-16 if they don't like the direction of the program or how they fit with the new coach.

"It's a very unique time," Trieu said. "You have a coaching staff, not knowing if they'll be back, preparing for a game while trying to hold onto signees and current players — and everybody is impatient."

Jayden Daniels is being shut down by the Commanders for the last three games

Jayden Danielswill be shut down for the rest of theWashington Commanders'season, starting with Saturday's game against the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles.

"We're going to sit him for the final three games," Washington coach Dan Quinn said Monday during a video conference with reporters, calling the decision "part medical and part team."

"As of today," Quinn added, "he still wasn't all the way cleared to play."

The Commanders (4-10) have been eliminated from playoff contention.

Daniels appeared in only seven games this season, missing time because of a sprained left knee, a hurt right hamstring and, most recently, a dislocated left elbow that he aggravated when he returned to action against the Minnesota Vikings on Dec. 7.

Daniels sat outSunday's 29-21 victory at the New York Giants, which ended Washington's eight-game losing streak.

Last season, Daniels appeared in all 20 games the Commanders played, including a 12-5 regular season and a run to the NFC title game before losing to the Eagles. He earned AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors after being the No. 2 overall pick in the draft.

Now his second season in the NFL is already done.

"We believe this decision allows him to take advantage of the next few weeks. He wants to practice and he will practice," Quinn said. "We all know the best way to grow is during the games … but there's plenty of ways for him to learn."

As a rookie, Daniels was superb, completing 69% of his passes for 3,568 yards with 25 touchdowns and nine interceptions and running for 891 yards with six TDs.

This season, the 2023 Heisman Trophy winner at LSU owns a completion rate of 60.6 with 1,262 yards, eight touchdowns and three interceptions. His passer rating slid from 100.1 to 88.1. He ran for 278 yards with two scores.

  • Travis Kelce looked emotional after the Kansas City Chiefs were eliminated from the NFL playoffs in what could be his final season playing professional football

  • Kelce declined to talk to reporters after the game, telling them, "It's not the time"

  • The Chiefs lost 16-13 to the Los Angeles Chargers, and quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a torn ACL in the waning minutes of the game

Travis Kelcelooked defeated after the Chiefs were eliminated from the playoffs.

The 36-year-old tight end somberly hung his head as he walked past reporters and fans on his way to the locker room after the Chiefs lost their must-win game to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, Dec. 14.

In a video shared on X, Kelce was seen walking slowly with his helmet in his hand after the game. At one point, Kelce lightly hit the wall in frustration as he accepted the Chiefs' fate this season.

Kelce also declined to speak to reporters after the loss, telling them, "It's not the time."

Sunday's loss was crushing for Chiefs fans in more ways than one. QuarterbackPatrick Mahomessuffered a devastating injury late in the game as the Chiefs were down just three points. Hours after the game, an MRIconfirmedthat Mahomes, 30, sustained a torn ACL in his left knee.

"Patrick and the club are currently exploring surgical options," the team said.

The quarterback later took to X to thank fans for their support. "Don't know why this had to happen. And not going to lie it's hurts. But all we can do now is Trust in God and attack every single day over and over again," he wrote.

Mahomes concluded his post, "Thank you Chiefs kingdom for always supporting me and for everyone who has reached out and sent prayers."

To make the playoffs, the Chiefs needed to win all four of their remaining games this season, plus they needed others in the league to lose multiple games. But with their loss, the Chiefs eliminated themselves from contention.

As for Kelce, whether or not he'll retire is still to be determined. In November, hesaid he wants to give the Chiefs "a good opportunity"to improve their roster in the upcoming offseason by telling them early if he plans to play another season.

"Like, whether they want me back or not, it's one of those things where I'd like to make that decision before they've got to get draft picks and free agency opens up," Kelce told reporters.

Philip Rivers to start again for Colts vs. 49ers after exceeding expectations in loss to Seahawks

Philip Rivers is scheduled to start again for the Indianapolis Colts after playing inSunday's 18-16 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Head coachShane Steichen told reporters Mondaythat Rivers will start in Week 16 against the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night.

Anthony Richardson cleared, but not ready

Rivers will start as backup quarterback and former first-round pick Anthony Richardson has been medically cleared from an orbital fracture that's sidelined him since Week 6. Despite his clearance, Richardson remains on injured reserve as he continues to work back into football shape.

Steichen said Mondaythat Richardson has been "cleared from the eye standpoint, but we're just starting to work him back in the physical activity of everything."

It's not clear when Richardson will be activated from injured reserve or if he'd start over Rivers if he was ready to play.

Philip Rivers will start again against the 49ers after coming out of retirement to face the Seahawks.

Rivers, 44, came out of retirement for Sunday's game against Seattle after not having played since the 2020 season. The Colts were desperate at quarterback after a season-ending Achilles injury to starter Daniel Jones. Richardson remained sidelined with his orbital injury, and fellow backup Riley Leonard was dealing with a knee injury.

Rather than look to practice squad quarterback Brett Rypien, the Colts called Rivers, who last played in the NFL for Indianapolis in the 2020 season. Rivers had kept in good enough shape to play and suited up for Sunday's game against one of the best defenses in the NFL on short notice.

Rivers exceeded expectations against Seahawks

Given the circumstances,Rivers performed admirably and had the the Colts in position to winSunday's game after leading a late drive for a go-ahead field goal with 47 seconds remaining. But the Seahawks needed just 29 seconds to get into field-goal range on their ensuing possession to set kicker Jason Myers up for the game-winning, 56-yard field goal that secured the 18-16 victory.

While executing a conservative offensive game plan, Rivers completed 18 of 27 passes for 120 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception. The Colts were limited to a single touchdown and scored just one field goal after halftime.

But Rivers didn't make any notable mistakes and kept the Colts in front for most of the game. He successfully managed the offense as the Indianapolis defense kept the league's second highest scoring offense out of the end zone for the entire game. His interception arrived on a desperation downfield heave on the final Colts' snap of the game.

Rivers clearly doesn't possess the arm strength he once had. But he did complete some downfield throws when needed, including a 16-yard back-shoulder throw on the sideline to Alec Pierce that set up the Colts' late go-ahead field goal. It added up to a strong enough performance that the Colts are confident in starting him again against the 49ers as they fight to make the playoffs.

Colts face uphill climb to make playoffs

Behind the best season of Jones' career and an effort from running back Jonathan Taylor that had him in the early MVP conversation, the Colts were in position for the No. 1 seed in the AFC following an 8-2 start. But the Colts regressed even prior to Jones' Achilles tear, and Sunday's loss to the Seahawks was their fourth straight.

They've fallen to 8-6 and on theoutside looking in at the AFC playoff picture. They'd be the first team out of the playoffs if the postseason started this week.

The Colts have a difficult remaining schedule, with three games against teams that project to make the postseason. After Monday's game against San Francisco (10-4), they close with AFC South matchups against the Jaguars (10-4) and Texans (9-5), who are both in playoff position.

It adds up to a long shot for the Colts to make the postseason as their starting quarterback is sidelined. For now, at least, the Colts believe that Rivers gives them the best chance of beating those odds.

Denise Richards' fans received only treats on Halloween from the reality star.

Richards, 54, paid homage to her Playboy past and rocked a black bodysuit with matching ears for a series of photos shared on social media.

The "Wild Things" actress added a pair of white cuffs and a black-and-white bow-tie collar to complete her costume, nearly 20 years after starring on the cover of Playboy magazine.

Richards first posed fully nude for the adult publication in December 2004, only five months after giving birth. She told Jay Leno that her parents and newborn accompanied her on the photo shoot to the Bahamas, where she knew she was in trouble when the stylist provided "no bottoms" for one of the shots.

Denise Richards stars as Jolene in SEX, LOVE & SECRETS on UPN.

"I said, you better find me some fricken bottoms. So she made these bottoms out of a shammy and used the leaves from the island," Richards said of one image wearing leaves fashioned into a top. "I didn't have to show anything I didn't want to."

She added, "Playboy approached me a couple other times and I didn't do it, and this time I figured I might as well do it before they never approach me again," she said. "He [Charlie Sheen] was really cool about it and helped me pick out the pictures."

The "Drop Dead Gorgeous" actress embraced the holiday ahead of her return to court on a request for a permanent restraining order against her estranged husband Aaron Phypers.

The "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" star – who was granted a temporary restraining order against Phypers on July 17 amid their ongoing divorce – testified last month against her estranged husband. Richards began crying while recalling multiple allegations of physical and emotional abuse, including a particularly violent event in May.

Richards claimed Phypers got "very volatile" with her at the Four Seasons hotel just hours after the reality TV star had undergone multiple cosmetic surgeries – including a face lift.

Phypers allegedly tried to search through Richards' devices while she was sleeping, and then allegedly hit her face and damaged a drain in the process.

"That is when I really, really knew that our marriage was over because there's been physical abuse, but it kept getting worse and worse," Richards testified. "But the fact that he did that to me five hours after coming out of a seven-hour surgery … made me feel a lot of things. Scared and vulnerable. I couldn't walk by myself."

Richards described one instance in which Phypers allegedly grabbed her by her arms while she was recovering from her surgeries.

Richards posed for Playboy only five months after giving birth to her first daughter with ex-husband Charlie Sheen.

Aaron Phypers filed for divorce from Denise Richards in July.

"He would yell and call me names. Once he found out I was texting another man, he would flip it and call me a cheating w---- and a c--- and a lying b---- and he would make it about that. And then he would calm down, and we would be in separate rooms, and he would come back at me and start arguing again."

"He grabbed my arms," she claimed. "I was three weeks out of a breast augmentation, lipo and the face lift. I was feeling extremely vulnerable and in pain. I asked him to please stay at the other house with his family. I needed to rest and heal and couldn't have him around me like that."

During a hearing last month, Phypers was handcuffed and arrested on spousal abuse charges. After sheriffs escorted Phypers out of the courtroom, officers returned to retrieve his cellphone.

Phypers filed for divorce from Richards on July 7. He cited irreconcilable differences and is seeking spousal support from the "Real Housewives" star. Ten days later, Richards' request for a temporary restraining order was granted.

"Throughout our relationship Aaron would frequently violently choke me, violently squeeze my head with both hands, tightly squeeze my arms, violently slap me in my face and head, aggressively slam my head into the bathroom towel rack, threaten to kill me, hold me down with his knee on my back to the point where I would have to plead with him to get off me so that he would not kill me and hack into my laptop and phone and download all of my text messages," Richards claimed in the documents filed July 16.

Denise Richards petitioned the court in July for a temporary restraining order against her estranged husband, Aaron Phypers.

"Aaron regularly threatened to 'break my jaw' and would cry, beg me to stay, and promise to get help – none of which ever happened. Aaron has caused me at least three concussions."

Phypers filed a petition Wednesday claiming he's out of money after Richards allegedly cut off access to their joint bank account and took away his holistic business equipment. He claimed Richards is preventing him from making a living.

"With regard to the OnlyFans page, the money that she receives from it is about $200,000 to $300,000 per month and that income is derived from photographs that I took and to which I hold the intellectual property rights," Phypers' petition, obtained by Fox News Digital, says.

"Therefore, it is our joint earnings and not hers alone. I request that I receive half of the OnlyFans income as a property control right."

According to Phypers, he's about to be evicted from his home and his utilities have already been shut off. He requested immediate access to $200,000.

Phypers also asked for additional spousal support on top of half of Richards' OnlyFans earnings.
