INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Jaren Jackson Jr. scored 21 of his 31 points in the first half and Cam Spencer added a career-high 27 points as the Memphis Grizzlies beat the Los Angeles Clippers 121-103 on Monday night.

Jaylen Wells scored 16 points and rookie Cedric Coward had 12 as the Grizzlies earned a victory over the Clippers for the third time in less than three weeks. Ja Morant also scored 12 points for Memphis in his second game since returning from a calf injury.

While Morant has returned, Grizzlies center Zach Edey missed his second game of an extended absence because of a left ankle injury. Santi Aldama started at center for the second consecutive game and was held to just three points with two rebounds.

Kawhi Leonard scored 21 points and Kris Dunn added 17 for the Clippers, who have lost 12 of their last 14 games.

James Harden was held to 13 points, while John Collins and Jordan Miller each had 10 for Los Angeles in its eighth straight home loss. The Clippers last won in their own building on Oct. 31.

Cooper Flagg becomes youngest player to score 42 points but laments Mavericks' overtime loss to Jazz

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Cooper Flagg scored the most points by an 18-year-old in NBA history, but he couldn't enjoy the accomplishment because it came in a loss.

Flagg had 42 points — topping the previous mark of 37 set by LeBron James on Dec. 13, 2003 — in a140-133 loss to the Utah Jazzon Monday night.

"Obviously we didn't win. So it's tough for me to want to be happy, or any of that, but obviously it's a success," said Flagg, who had a bag of ice on his ankle after rolling it at the end of regulation.

Flagg also became just the fifth rookie to record 40 points, five rebounds and five assists in the last 15 years as he finished with seven board and six assists.

"The more time he spends on the floor, the more he sees, the better he gets. He displayed it all tonight," Dallas coach Jason Kidd said.

Flagg has been playing his best basketball the past few weeks as the No. 1 overall draft pick has averaged 25.7 points in the last seven games. He's also playing aggressive enough to get to the line and went 15 for 20 against Utah.

"It's come a long way from the start of the season, so I'm proud of that fourth quarter," Flagg said. "It's a new game ... but I am getting more and more comfortable ... and just settling in, honestly, just being myself and letting the game come to me."

He scored 12 points in the fourth quarter and made a savvy play to get the game into overtime when he missed a free throw on purpose with such a big carom that teammate Max Christie got the rebound with 3.9 seconds remaining and was fouled.

With Anthony Davis out and Dallas missing several other teammates to injuries, this game may be a harbinger of things to come as Flagg becomes a centerpiece of the Mavericks' offense.

"We were going to Coop. He was killing them the whole game, so they finally tried to double him." P.J. Washington said. "It doesn't surprise me at all. I know exactly what he's capable of. He's a special player so there will be a lot more to come."

Flagg also tied Mark Aguirre for the most points by a rookie in Mavs history as he begins to make his mark on the franchise. But he couldn't stop thinking of what he could have done to get the win despite the throbbing ankle. The Jazz made a late 11-0 run and then dominated in overtime as Flagg didn't score a basket in the extra period.

"I gotta be better. I had a couple of dumb turnovers, missed a couple easy ones, but I gotta be better, executing down the stretch like that," Flagg said.

Setting records might be nice but Flagg feels it just means he's consistently improving and that's been his goal all season.

"I'm not really focused on a lot of that stuff (the records). I'm more just focused on being present, day to day, and trying to get better and and getting our team as many wins as we can," Flagg said.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has surgery to repair torn ACL, reportedly also had LCL repaired

Patrick Mahomes underwent surgery Monday evening to repair the torn ACL in his left knee that he suffered in Sunday's loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.

Also, per multiple reports,Mahomes had his LCL repaired during the procedure. The Chiefs announced the surgery to reapair his ACL, but did not mention the reported LCL procedure in their announcement.

Per the Chiefs, Mahomes underwent the procedure in Dallas with Dr. Dan Cooper, the team physician for the Cowboys. They made the announcement hours after head coach Andy Reid told reporters that Mahomes was seeking a second opinion on his injury from Cooper.

—Kansas City Chiefs(@Chiefs)December 16, 2025

While a timeline is not yet known, Reid said prior to Mahomes' surgery that he's optimistic that Mahomes will experience a "fairly quick recovery" as long as the surgery is a success.

Reid made his comments in his Monday news conference, a day afterthe devastating injury to Mahomesthat was compounded in Kansas City by the Chiefs being eliminated from the playoff race.

Why Mahomes wanted a second opinion

In his news conference Monday, Reid explained that seeking a second opinion is normal operating procedure in these circumstances.

It's not clear from reports when the LCL damage was discovered. Reid was asked to clarify earlier Monday if Mahomes sustained damage to his meniscus or anything else in his knee other than his ACL. He pointed to the statement released by the Chiefs on Sunday announcing that Mahomes had torn his ACL.

— Kansas City Chiefs (@Chiefs)December 15, 2025

"It's just what they put out there," Reid said. "We try not to hide too much from you. That's not our game. I try to keep it right up front with you. That's the information that they have, and they put it out for you."

The Chiefs have three regular-season games left. But with Mahomes injured and the Chiefs out of the playoffs for the first time since the 2014 season, the bigger picture focus has shifted to the future and Mahomes' long-term health.

When will Mahomes be ready to return to fooball?

Though the surgery is now behind him, there is no official timeline yet for Mahomes to return. The team only said on Monday night that he "will begin his rehab process immediately." ACL tearsgenerally sideline athletes anywhere from 6-12 months. It's not immediately clear how the reported LCL procedure will impact his recovery.

Reid projected optimistic about Mahomes' chances of returning sooner than late prior to his surgery.

"You never know on these rehabs how they go," Reid said. "I just know he's got good people that he'll be working with. I know how aggressive he is on things. As long as the surgery goes well and as expected, I would expect a fairly quick recovery for him just because of those factors."

Tom Brady tore ACL at similar point in his career

The good news for Mahomes is that other elite athletes have suffered ACL tears and recovered to continue to play at a high level. The most apt comparison for Mahomes is Tom Brady, who sustained a torn ACL in his ninth NFL season, just like Mahomes.

Brady tore his ACL in the first game of the 2008 season and returned for the start of the 2009 season. He went on to make 11 Pro Bowls and win two MVPs and four Super Bowls after his torn ACL. Brady's run, obviously, is unprecedented and far from the standard that any athlete should expect. But Mahomes is also exceptional, and there's reasonable hope that he can return to form after his rehab.

Mahomes vowed on social media Sunday to "be back stronger than ever."

Don't know why this had to happen. And not going to lie it's hurts. But all we can do now is Trust in God and attack every single day over and over again. Thank you Chiefs kingdom for always supporting me and for everyone who has reached out and sent prayers. I Will be back…

— Patrick Mahomes II (@PatrickMahomes)December 14, 2025

The immediate question becomes a matter of when Mahomes will be ready to return. The most optimistic typical timeline (six months) would have Mahomes return in mid-June, which would have him ready in time for training camp.

A nine-month timeline would have him back in mid-September. The 2026 season is slated to kick off on Sept. 4. Anything beyond that would eat into a significant portion of the 2026 season.

Again, a timeline for Mahomes is not yet set. More will presumably be known in the near future now that surgery is complete.

Knicks and Spurs to meet in Tuesday's NBA Cup final for trophy, bragging rights and cash

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The NBA Cup final doesn't count. New York will enter with an 18-7 record. San Antonio will enter with an 18-7 record. And when Tuesday night's game between the Knicks and Spurs is over, those records will be unchanged.

But the game will have plenty of meaning. The teams are sure of that.

A trophy, some bragging rights and a ton of money will be at stake when the Knicks and Spurs play in the NBA Cup title game. It'll be the first time those franchises have met with a trophy on the line since San Antonio topped New York in the 1999 NBA Finals.

"It's a high-stakes game that both teams are going to be very invested in winning," Spurs star Victor Wembanyama said. "It just shows that we are preparing and we will pass the next step for more significant games in the playoffs. This is a complicated explanation, but it's as simple as that: As competitors, we want to win every game, and this one brings something new on the table, so we want to win it even more."

It will be the end of the third in-season event: The Los Angeles Lakers beat Indiana in Year 1 when it was part of what was simply called the In-Season Tournament, and Milwaukee beat Oklahoma City last year after the rebranding to the NBA Cup. At stake: $318,560 per player with a standard contract on the winning team — they've secured $212,373 each from the Cup bonus pool by getting to the final, and the winners' share jumps to $530,933 apiece.

"You're not winning or gaining anything in your record, but you're going out there and competing," Knicks guard Jalen Brunson said. "You're playing for more than just yourself. You're playing for your team, your organization and your city. There's a lot at stake besides the record. You go out there and compete no matter what."

Added Spurs guard De'Aaron Fox: "People like money. It is what it is. That's life."

The financial payoff is one thing. There's another payoff that could come this spring for the Spurs and Knicks.

The four previous Cup finalists — the Lakers and Pacers, then the Thunder and Bucks — all went to the playoffs after playing for this trophy, with the Pacers making the East finals in 2024 and the Thunder winning the title last season.

"No matter if it's the Cup, NBA Finals, winning any game, when you get that feeling of winning, it's addictive," Knicks forward Karl-Anthony Towns said. "Obviously, I want us to have that mindset where we're addicted to the next championship if we can win this one. I think this is a great start for us to understand the standards needed to win at a high level, at a championship level."

Every NBA Cup game counts in the standings, except the final. The NBA regular season is 82 games long and the league — in the Cup era — gives each club an 80-game schedule over the summer, with two more games to be filled in depending on how they perform during the group stage of the tournament.

For the Spurs and Knicks, those two extra games were the Cup quarterfinals and semifinals. This would be an 83rd game, so the league decided when it added the tournament that the Cup final wouldn't count in the official records or stats for that season.

It won't change the way the teams play.

"You treat it like a regular game," Brunson said.

Wembanyama will likely remain on some sort of minutes restriction; he played 21 minutes off the bench on Saturday night in San Antonio's111-109 win over Oklahoma City, his first game back after missing 12 with a strained left calf.

The Spurs came into Monday still deciding whether to start Wembanyama against the Knicks.

"When it comes to a guy like Wemby, because at his size and his skillset, nine times out of 10 he's going to miss because he misses," Knicks coach Mike Brown said. "But we have some pretty good defenders with length, and hopefully they can, at the point of attack, try to make it as difficult as possible with him, knowing that they have help behind them."

The Knicks and Spurs both got to the Cup final with 5-1 records in the tournament; they each were 3-1 in group play, then went on the road for quarterfinal wins (New York over Toronto, San Antonio over the Lakers) beforeNew York topped Orlandoand San Antonio beat the Thunder in Saturday's semifinals in Las Vegas.

And now, a game that means nothing. Or everything, depending on perspective.

"I think we go into (Tuesday) trying to win the NBA Cup, and that's the approach," Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. "Our guys are really, really excited to be here. They've been excited since the start of it. ... I think we've seen our group really embrace the Cup. We've earned the right to be here, and I think we're going to attack the game and be really fired up to try to go win it."

Dodgers owe $1.06 billion in deferred money to 9 players through 2047 after Edwin Díaz deal

NEW YORK (AP) — Edwin Díaz won't receive all of his $69 million from the Dodgers until 2047, with the closer's deal raising deferred payment obligations for thetwo-time World Series championsto more than $1.06 billion due to nine players.

As part of thethree-year contract announced Friday,Díaz gets a $9 million signing bonus payable on Feb. 1, according to terms obtained by The Associated Press.

He receives a $14 million salary next year and $23 million in each of the following two seasons. The Dodgers will defer $4.5 million annually.

Díaz's deferred money is payable in 10 equal installments each July 1. The 2026 money is due from 2036-45, the 2027 money from 2037-46 and the 2028 money from 2038-47.

Los Angeles has a $6.5 million conditional team option for 2029 with no buyout. The option could be exercised if he has a specified injury through the end of the 2028 season and he does not end the season or postseason healthy, or if he has a specified surgery.

If the conditional option is exercised, he could earn $2.5 million in performance bonuses for 2029 based on games finished: $750,000 each for 45 and 50 games and $1 million for 55.

Díaz gets a hotel suite on road trips and will make a charitable contribution of 1% of his income.
