The Knicks won the NBA Cup without a hero, and that should frighten the league

LAS VEGAS — Each time the New York Knicks needed a problem solved, no matter how mundane or complex the on-court task was deemed to be, the question and answer was Mitchell Robinson.

His five offensive rebounds in the span of 90 seconds provided the fulcrum of a pivotal three-minute, 16-2 run that gave New York a fourth-quarter lead they would never surrender, but Robinson's commitment to crashing the glass — against a team that relished a physical bout down low — proved pivotal on one of the game's biggest stages. Robinson played just 18 minutes but snagged 15 total rebounds — 10 of them being offensive — in a game where the Knicks scored 32 second-chance points from 23 added opportunities.

"Tonight showed why it's important to create extra possessions," Robinson, donning a cup champions T-shirt, told Yahoo Sports following theKnicks' 124-113 win over the Spurs in the NBA Cup championship. "They shoot the ball, they miss, I get the offensive rebound and that's another chance of us scoring. I did that, what, ten times tonight? We missed some but the chance is there. It helps a lot."

Tuesday night's Cup final was an enthralling contest from start to finish, a deliberate, grind-it-out affair from two of the slower teams in terms of pace. It was an atmosphere fitting of a championship game — the Spurs super fans chanting and dancing for 48 minutes, the Knicks faithful letting their emotions hang on every missed shot or deflection and Vegas providing the perfect backdrop for a high-stakes affair.

But given the playoff-like environment, Victor Wembanyama's individual star power and New York's assemblage of talent, the crowning glory would come from which team simply had the ball more. In Robinson, the Knicks have one of the league's best in doing just that. So much of the Knicks' offense — second in the NBA according to Cleaning the Glass — comes from their ability to generatemorethan their opponents. They are the second-most frequent and third-most efficient team in offense after an offensive rebound, per Synergy tracking data. When Robinson is on the floor, New York's offensive rebounding rate soars by over fourteen percent — good for the 100th percentile. It's not as glamorous of a stat as isolation efficiency, playmaking control or three-point savvy, but it's just as important.

"Mitchell Robinson, he had 10 offensive rebounds in 18 minutes," head coach Mike Brown said. "That's unbelievable. We had 23 offensive rebounds for the game. He had 10. OG had four. KAT had four. That was probably the biggest difference in the game when you're scoring 32 second-chance points. For him to come off the bench and do that … "

"Shout-out to Mitch, man," Karl Anthony-Towns added. "Hell of a day at the office for him."

Still, as critical as offensive rebounds can be to a good half-court offense, they're deemed futile without everything else working in tandem. Quality floor spacing, decision and shot-making, talent and overall IQ are the other necessary ingredients that make a contender. OG Anunoby led all players on the floor with 28 points on 10-for-17 shooting, Jalen Brunson chipped in 25 of his own and Karl Anthony-Towns finished with 16 — with Jordan Clarkson and Tyler Kolek combining for 29 points from the bench. The Knicks, much like the city of New York, are a diverse group that get their strength from the sum of their parts. They shy away from isolated praise, understanding their ultimate goal can't be reached on the shoulders of one or two. Brunson, who was named tournament MVP, wasted no time in shouting out the contributions of each of his teammates as he was presented with his trophy as a reminder of the collective.

"Without them I don't hold that trophy," Brunson said. "We don't hold the trophy as a team. We're on the complete other side of this."

"Just having everybody out there competing and contributing to the team," forward Mikal Bridges told Yahoo Sports. "I think we got a lot of talented guys. High-IQ individuals that will go out there and do whatever it takes to win."

In a lot of ways, being the last one standing — albeit in a midseason tournament — could invigorate the Knicks as they plant their flag in the ground as one of the NBA elite, especially with New York sitting just 2.5 games behind Detroit atop a much-improved Eastern Conference. It was clear from their words both before and after the game that bringing success back home, lifting a banner, meant something. New York outlasted two top four seeds in the Western Conference and Orlando, the East's fifth seed. Regardless of what the outside perception of the NBA Cup may be, you'd be hard pressed to convince these Knicks that Tuesday night doesn't matter.

New York can make a strong claim as the deepest, most talented team in the East — and perhaps the NBA as a whole. How many teams can match the sheer offensive brilliance and leadership of Brunson? The two-way skill set of Anunoby and Bridges? Towns' unicorn-like gravity? Josh Hart's glue? Jordan Clarkson's instant scoring off the bench? The guidance and tactical astuteness of Brown?

Thisis why the Knicks should be feared. Brunson is the head of the snake, a likely MVP candidate and rightfully so; his ability to command complete control of a team filled with vibrant personalities, all while understanding how to navigate situations, is admirable. But take a stroll into Madison Square Garden and think that slowing Brunson down is a surefire way to victory, and your mistakes haven't even begun. New York is deep. New York is dangerous. New York is champion. And they're just getting started.

"It's a goal of ours that we get to check off," Brunson said. "It's an important stepping stone for us. We can still learn from this game and get better, as well. I'm very thankful for the opportunity presented to ourselves. … This is great. We're going to enjoy this. But once we leave tomorrow, we're moving on."

Celebrini's spin-o-rama goal helps him become fastest Sharks player to 50 points

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Macklin Celebrini reached his latest milestone in most impressive fashion.

Celebrini scored aspin-o-rama goalas part of a four-point night that made him the fastest San Jose player to reach 50 points in a season as the Sharksbeat the Calgary Flames 6-3on Tuesday.

"He's incredible," teammate Barclay Goodrow said. "It seems like every night he does something that just makes you say, 'Wow.' At this point, it's not surprising, but it still is surprising. He proves each and every night why he's one of the best players in the league."

The numbers Celebrini is putting up are staggering, especially as a 19-year-old in just his second NHL season. He has 18 goals and 33 assists through San Jose's first 34 games after recording two goals and two assists against the Flames.

He reached the 50-point mark three games faster than any other Sharks player. The only other teenagers to get there faster are two of the greatest in NHL history: Wayne Gretzky and Sidney Crosby.

"He's a special one, for sure," San Jose coach Ryan Warsofsky said. "Every time you think he's going to maybe slow down and maybe hit a speed bump, he doesn't. He just keeps going. You can see he had legs early tonight. He's obviously a very special individual."

Celebrini assisted on two goals in the first period, including a pinpoint pass to John Klingberg that set up the first one, and played a strong game at both ends of the ice all night.

But it was his breathtaking move early in the third that was truly jaw dropping. Celebrini took a pass from Collin Graf, spun without breaking stride and put a shot on net that Dustin Wolf initially saved before the puck bounced off Celebrini's hip and went in.

"It's kind of just a reaction," Celebrini said. "I mean, Graffer made a good play on the wall to kind of intercept it and then just found me in the middle. It was just kind of reactionary, but it was a little lucky. It goes off my hip."

Celebrini capped the game with an empty-net goal that sealed San Jose's 17th win. The young Sharks are currently in playoff position after finishing last in the league the past two seasons.

San Jose won only 20 games in Celebrini's rookie season, and didn't reach 17 until the 63rd game.

"It's fun," he said. "It's enjoyable to be around the rink when you're winning and you're playing well as a group and you just kind of feed off it. It's more fun when you are winning."

Celebrini is the biggest reason for the turnaround.

His high level of play has earned him respect around the league and made a case for his inclusion on the Canadian Olympic team.

"Everyone sees it," Goodrow said. "He's one of the best. He has the ability to put a team on his back. He competes as hard as he can, each and every shift. He's a leader. He does a lot for us."

Rams cross fingers that Davante Adams will be able to face Seahawks

The Los Angeles Rams have the NFL's touchdown-reception leader.

The Seattle Seahawks have the leader in receiving yards.

However, only one of those players might suit up when the teams meet in an NFC West showdown on Thursday night in Seattle.

The Rams (11-3) might be without Davante Adams, who has 14 touchdown catches, because of a nagging left hamstring injury.

Coach Sean McVay said he would likely wait until game time to make a decision on Adams, who aggravated the injury while running a deep route on Sunday in Los Angeles' 41-34 victory against visiting Detroit.

"I'm not ruling anyone out," McVay said Tuesday. "He just got his hamstring. He felt it a little bit, and it's something he's been dealing with, and he's as tough as it gets. Want to be able to see what it looks like with the time we have."

Adams has twice previously dealt with hamstring issues this season, his first with the Rams. He has 60 catches for 789 yards.

Rams defensive end Braden Fiske (ankle) also missed practice on Tuesday.

Los Angeles quarterback Matthew Stafford is a leading MVP contender with a league-leading 37 touchdown passes and 3,722 yards through the air, second only to the 3,931 of the Dallas Cowboys' Dak Prescott.

The Rams, who have won two games in a row and eight of their past nine, lead the Seahawks (11-3) in the NFC West by virtue of their 21-19 home victory against Seattle on Nov. 16. Los Angeles intercepted Sam Darnold four times but had to sweat out a last-second 61-yard field-goal attempt by Jason Myers that narrowly missed wide right.

Myers kicked a franchise-record six field goals on Sunday as the Seahawks edged the visiting Indianapolis Colts 18-16. It was Seattle's fourth straight win since the loss to the Rams.

Left tackle Charles Cross, who sustained a hamstring injury on Myers' winning kick, was the lone Seahawks player to miss practice on Tuesday.

"We're just trying to gather the info right now, exhausting all options to see how fast we can get him back," Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said of Cross.

While the Seahawks' Jaxon Smith-Njigba leads the NFL with 1,541 receiving yards, the rest of the offense has stalled. Seattle's offense has scored just six first-half points in each of its past three games (not counting an interception return for a TD).

The Seahawks likely will need more than that against a Rams team that has scored 40-plus points in each of its past two contests.

"We just need to get together and understand the game plan and execute at the end of the day," Smith-Njigba said. "And I'll leave it at that."

Seattle managed a season-low 50 rushing yards against the Colts, with Kenneth Walker III totaling just 17 yards on nine attempts.

"We didn't run it the way we wanted to," Macdonald said. "It's kind of a little bit of everything right now. A little bit late in the year to be saying that. So, I mean, we got to pick it up, really, on all fronts."

Seattle's defense ranks second in the league in opponents' scoring, allowing just 17.3 points per game.

McVay admitted he hasn't gotten much sleep this week after his wife Veronika gave birth to son Christian Alexander McVay on Monday morning.

"What a crazy week to be playing on a Thursday," McVay said. "This is a good challenge. ... It's a blessing to be able to play in meaningful games this late in the season."

LeJuan Watts (36) steers No. 19 Texas Tech past Northern Colorado

LeJuan Watts tallied 20 of his career-high 36 points in the first half, and No. 19 Texas Tech toppled pesky Northern Colorado 101-90 on Tuesday in Lubbock, Texas.

Watts made all but one of his 13 field-goal attempts and hit 9 of 11 at the foul line while grabbing six rebounds and dishing four assists for the Red Raiders (8-3).

Texas Tech's JT Toppin had 23 points, three rebounds and five blocks. Christian Anderson and Jaylen Petty notched 14 points each and Donovan Atwell scored 10 as Texas Tech shot 35 of 59 from the field (59.3%) and made 19 of 24 at the stripe (79.2%).

Texas Tech improved to 6-0 at home and won for the fourth time in the past five games overall.

The Bears (9-2) played without top scorer Quinn Denker (17.3 points) but received a career-high 29 points from Brock Wisne. Zach Bloch totaled 17 points, five rebounds and eight assists. In his first Bears start, Vincent Delano scored 16 as the squad shot 56.1% from the field.

Northern Colorado lost on the road for the first time in five games this season.

Watts, who was averaging 11.6 points per game, was hot from the start, sinking all four of his field-goal attempts and netting 10 of the Red Raiders' points in a 13-8 stretch over four minutes to start the game.

Texas Tech kept its shooting proficiency early, making 10 of the first 11 shots for a 25-16 lead, but Wisne's trey from the top of the key pulled the Bears within 25-20.

Petty gave the Red Raiders their first double-digit lead with a nearly 30-foot deep ball from up top, pushing the advantage to 36-26 with 8:10 remaining in the half.

The fast-paced, high-scoring action continued the rest of the period, and Bloch hit a long 3-pointer in the final minute to cut Northern Colorado's deficit to 56-51 at the break.

Delano led the Bears with 12 first-half points.

Atwell's 3-pointer with 17:46 remaining in regulation put Texas Tech up 67-53, but Wisne's layup at 13:03 knotted it at 70-all to cap a 17-3 run.

In the game's final three minutes, the Red Raiders went on an 8-2 run for their 45th straight home win against a nonconference opponent.

Celebrini's jaw-dropping goal helps Sharks beat Flames 6-3

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Macklin Celebrini scored ajaw-dropping goaland added an empty-netter and two assists to become the fastest San Jose player to reach 50 points in a season as the Sharks beat the Calgary Flames 6-3 on Tuesday night.

Celebrini assisted on two goals in the first period and then took over the game in the third. First he took a pass from Collin Graf, spun without breaking stride and beat Dustin Wolf for his 17th goal of the season to make it 4-2.

The empty-netter put it away, giving the 19-year-old Celebrini 51 points in San Jose's 34th game of the season. That's three games faster than any other Sharks player reached the 50-point mark, with Erik Karlsson, Joe Thornton and Owen Nolan all doing it in 37 games. The only teenagers to reach 50 points earlier in an NHL season were Sidney Crosby and Wayne Gretzky.

Barclay Goodrow had two goals, John Klingberg also scored for San Jose, and Tyler Toffoli got his 300th career goal.

Yaroslav Askarov made 27 saves for the Sharks, who were coming off back-to-back overtime wins at Toronto and Pittsburgh to end their road trip.

Blake Coleman, Ryan Lomberg and Nazem Kadri scored for the Flames, who had won four of five. Wolf made 20 saves.

The Sharks started fast, scoring twice in the first six minutes with Celebrini setting up Klingberg for his fourth goal in the last three games and Goodrow scoring his first.

The Flames tied it by scoring twice in just over three minutes before Goodrow scored his second of the game in the closing seconds of the period when he knocked a loose puck on the goal line into an open net.

The Sharks preserved the lead by killing two penalties in the second period as Calgary's league-worst power play generated only one shot on goal in four minutes with the man advantage.

Flames: Host the Seattle Kraken on Thursday.

Bills sign kicker Michael Badgley to practice squad to fill in while Matt Prater is sidelined

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — The Buffalo Bills on Tuesday signed kicker Michael Badgley to their practice squad, with the expectation he'll take over on an interim basis for injured veteran Matt Prater.

Badgley has seven seasons of NFL experience and most recently appeared in seven games with the Indianapolis Colts this year.

He was cut Dec. 2, two days after missing his third extra-point attempt of the year in a 20-16 loss to Houston. Badgley was good on 10 of 11 field-goal attempts, including 2 of 3 from 50 yards or longer.

Overall, he's made 116 of 139 field-goal attempts, with a 59-yarder his longest, and is 186 of 196 on extra-point attempts while also playing for Detroit, Chicago, Tennessee and the Chargers.

Buffalo (10-4) plays at Cleveland (3-11) on Sunday.

Prater has been ruled out after hurting his quadriceps in a 35-31 win over New England on Sunday. He signed with Buffalo in early September after Tyler Bass was placed on injured reserve. Bass had season-ending surgery to repair a hip and groin issue.

The Bills opened a practice squad spot for Badgley by releasing cornerback M.J. Devonshire.

NEED TO KNOW

  • Philip Rivers scored more than just a touchdown in his first start in five years

  • In his return to the NFL, the Colts' new quarterback gets an additional five years of health insurance benefits

  • Rivers, who shares 10 children and one grandchild with his wife Tiffany, retired from the NFL in 2021

Philip Riversis passing along an extra perk that comes with his un-retirement: health insurance!

The 44-year-old Indianapolis Colts quarterback, who returned to the NFL on Sunday, Dec. 14 nearly five years after his retirement in 2021, is now eligible to receive coverage for himself and his wife, Tiffany, and their 10 children for an additional five years.

Rivers' health insurance benefits were due to expire in August 2026,according to The Athletic.

NFL players receive five years of medical and dental insurance after their retirement thanks to the 2006 agreementbrokered by the NFL Players Association.

Rivers' most recent stint in the league also means another change — his possible entry into the Pro Football Hall of Fame will be delayed until five years after he retires again.

For the former Chargers signal-caller, the return to pro game has been a "blast" so far, he told reporters after the 18-16 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

Rivers threw for 120 yards with one touchdown and one interception, but the Alabama native couldn't secure the win for the Colts, who lost starting quarterbackDaniel Jonesthe week before to a season-ending torn Achilles.

Rivers regaled reporters after the game with his thoughts on his emotional return.

"If I can stay healthy, I feel good, and it is going to get better as we go," he said, as Rivers and the Colts hope to secure a spot in the playoffs in their remaining three games.

The grandfather, who was most recently coaching his sons' high school team, then tried to take the focus off himself.

"This isn't about me," he said. "We have a team scrapping like crazy to try and stay alive and get into the postseason."
