Green Bay basketball coach Doug Gottlieb stepping away from radio show

Green Bay men's basketball coach Doug Gottlieb plans to "take a break" from his radio show. Gottlieb wants to put his complete focus on his coaching duties.

The former Oklahoma State guard was hosting a national sports talk radio show before he was hired by Green Bay in May 2025.

"As of now, we're going to take a break from it," Gottlieb said in his news conference after Green Bay's 67-64 victory over UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday. "I've got to have a life. I've got to be there for these kids. I've got to really dig in because we're building something cool here."

Gottlieb expects to continue doing his podcast.

Green Bay has won two of its last three games since Gottlieb expressed his frustration after an 80-78 loss to Robert Morris on Dec. 4.Gottlieb was caught on camera throwing a chairon his way back to the locker room following that loss.

Green Bay was up by as many as 11 points with 3:54 left in the second half. But the Colonials cut Green Bay's lead down to two points with 35.7 seconds left, when the Phoenix were called for a 10-second violation after not advancing the ball past midcourt.

Robert Morris made a go-ahead 3-pointer and Green Bay made just one of two free throw attempts to leave the game tied. Nikolaos Chitikoudis provided Robert Morris with the victory after making the winning layup with 2.4 seconds left to play.

Rockets coach Ime Udoka fined for slamming refs after overtime loss to Denver

NEW YORK (AP) — Rockets coach Ime Udoka was fined $25,000 for publicly criticizing the officiating in Houston's128-125 overtime lossto the Nuggets on Monday, the NBA announced Wednesday.

Udoka said in the postgame press conference the game was "the most poorly officiated (he's) seen in a long time" and took a shot at each official.

"Two (refs) have no business being out there and crew chief was acting starstruck, so you're seeing all kinds of inconsistent calls, and I'm sure we should've got a few more techs," Udoka said after the game.

The fine comes after theNBA's Last Two Minute Reportrevealed that there were three incorrect calls in overtime, all of which favored Denver. The report stated that the officials missed a call against Denver's Tim Hardaway Jr., and Houston's Amen Thompson and Kevin Durant were incorrectly called for fouls.

Thompson and Durant's fouls gave Denver four free throws.Nikola Jokicand Jamal Murray both went 2 for 2 and extended the lead to 128-122 with 47.2 seconds remaining.

Jokic had his 12th triple-double of the season and the Nuggets got their fifth consecutive win.

Faulk scores only goal of game, Hofer makes 24 saves to help Blues blank Jets 1-0

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Justin Faulk scored and Joel Hofer made 24 saves to lift the St. Louis Blues to a 1-0 win over the stumbling Winnipeg Jets on Wednesday night.

Hofer earned his third shutout of the season and the fifth in his career in the first meeting between the Blues and Jets since Winnipeg beat St. Louis in double overtime on May 4 in game seven of their first-round Stanley Cup playoff series.

Connor Hellebuyck made 25 saves for Winnipeg, which has lost five of its last six contests.

Faulk scored his eighth goal of the season on a feed from Robert Thomas with 6:43 remaining in the second period to give St. Louis the lead.

Winnipeg is 2-12-1 when allowing its opponent to score first this season.

Jets center Jonathan Toews skated in his 1,100th career NHL game, becoming the 27th player in league history to accomplish the feat after San Jose forward Jeff Skinner and Calgary center Mikael Backlund reached that milestone on Tuesday night.

Blues forward Otto Stenberg made his NHL debut after being selected by the team with the 25th overall pick in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, and forward Jonatan Berggren made his debut with the team after being claimed off waivers from Detroit on Tuesday.

Zach Wilson 'frustrated' after Dolphins pick Quinn Ewers as starter over him after Tua Tagovailoa benching

It wasn't exactly a surprise when the Miami Dolphinsannounced Wednesday they were benching starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. That had been a long time coming.

It was, however, somewhat unexpected when the team tapped seventh-round rookie Quinn Ewers as the new starter and not the more experienced Zach Wilson. Especially for Wilson, apparently.

Speaking with the Miami Heraldafter Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel announced the change under center, Wilson reportedly said he was "frustrated" and maybe a little confused as well" about being passed over for starting duties this coming Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals.

He did wish Ewers well, though, via the Herald:

"Of course I would love to play," Wilson said. "...I can't control that. My job is to go out and do the best I can. Keep preparing, .... getting better, supporting Quinn. Excited for him to get his first start."

Asked if McDaniel explained why he didn't get the starting job, Wilson said: "A little bit. There's still confusion there. But you know what? That's how it goes sometimes."

Wilson will serve as Ewers' backup on Sunday, much like he has for Tagovailoa this season.

The former second overall pick signed with the Dolphins last offseason on a one-year, $6 million contract, after an unsuccessful run as the New York Jets' starting quarterback and a 2024 season with the Denver Broncos in which he didn't appear in a game. Ewers was drafted in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

For much of the year, the Dolphins' QB depth chart has been Tagovailoa, Wilson and Ewers. Wilson has appeared in three games as the backup, while Ewers made his NFL debut in October with his first and only appearance. Neither profile as a long-term solution for the Dolphins, but Ewersreportedlyimpressed enough in preseason and practice that Miami opted to give him a whirl against the 4-10 Bengals.

At the very least, a successful start could set up Ewers for a more long-term back-up role for the Dolphins going forward, while Wilson is a free agent after this season.

McDaniel reportedly told Wilson he still has a chance to play this season, though. Wilson also reflected on his time with the team in some diplomatic terms, via the Herald:

Asked to describe his one season as a Dolphin, Wilson said: "It's definitely been eventful, right?... Guys have been great and I appreciate the organization bringing me here.

"It's definitely been tough. I don't think the season has gone as we all had hoped.

Wish we could have pulled out some more wins and things had gone a little smoother. And of course, I would like to be playing, but it happens. So we'll go from there."

As politely as Wilson puts it, it's been a miserable season for the Dolphins, who are 6-8, out of the playoffs and just publicly ceded defeat on their franchise quarterback. They have three games left before they enter an offseason with some uncomfortable questions, with the Bengals game scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on Sunday in Miami.

Ohio football fires coach Brian Smith for 'serious professional misconduct'

Only two days before the start of theCollege Football Playoff, another head-coaching job in the sport has come open.

Ohio terminated the contract of first-year head coachBrian Smithfor cause, the university announced on Wednesday, Dec. 17.

The move came after an administrative review of allegations that Smith had "violated the terms of his employment agreement by engaging in serious professional misconduct and participating in activities that reflect unfavorably on the University."

Smith had been placed on administrative leave two weeks earlier for an "undetermined period of time." The school did not specify a reason for the decision.

According to the Athletic, Smith met with Ohio AD Slade Larscheid and other administrators on Nov. 24 to discuss an allegation that Smith violated university and contractual policy related to "alcohol and other drugs."

Rex Elliott, Smith's attorney, said in a statement on Wednesday that he and Smith "vigorously dispute" Ohio's grounds for termination for cause and that they will fight the move.

"He (Smith) is shocked and dismayed by this turn of events, and we plan to fight this wrongful termination to protect his good name," Elliottsaid in the statement. "Coach Smith is an ethical man who has done an exemplary job for the University. He wants nothing but the best for the players, coaches, and the entire Bobcat community."

The 45-year-old Smith had been at Ohio since 2022 and was elevated to head coach after the 2024 season, when then-Bobcatscoach Tim Albin left for the same position at Charlotte. Ohio went 8-4 in its lone season under Smith and made the Frisco Bowl, where it will take on UNLV on Dec. 23. John Hauser, who was named the Bobcats' interim head coach when Smith was placed on leave, will coach the team in that game.

The university said a coach for a permanent replacement will begin immediately.

Earlier this season, Smith had been part of one of the more unusual arrangements in the sport, as he wasessentially working without a contractas recently as early October, as USA TODAY reported.

Smith had signed a document with Ohio officials when he was promoted to head coach after Albin's departure. The document — which was a term sheet, not a formal contract — said Smith's compensation would have an average annual value of $850,000 per year from Dec. 17, 2024, through Dec. 31, 2029, but it did not say what Smith was to be paid for that, or any other year of his employment. The document also said Smith would have performance incentives, but that they "will be negotiated between the parties, the terms of which will be comparable with other Mid-American Conference institutions."

In an email to USA TODAY Sports in October, Ohio spokesman Dan Pittman said that "While a contract would typically be finalized ahead of a head coach announcement, Coach Smith's longstanding relationship with the University and his commitment to leading the (Ohio) football program made it possible to move forward in this unique case while working under the guidance of the term sheet."

On Oct. 10, one day after USA TODAY Sports reported on Smith's unique employment situation, Smith had a formal, fully executed agreement with the university. The deal ran through the 2029 season.
