Knicks coach Mike Brown would like league officials to consider post-NBA Cup scheduling changes

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — New York Knicks coach Mike Brown believes that while there are benefits to winning the NBA Cup, league officials should address the post-tournament scheduling in the future.

The first-year coach rattled off the grueling stretch the Knicks now face after beating San Antonio124-113 on Tuesday nightin Las Vegas. The eight-day run that features five games in three different cities is capped by a noon tip at home Christmas Day against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

"Basically, I've been here for a week praising the NBA. The Cup is fun and first class and all that other staff," Brown said before Thursday's game atIndiana. "But somehow, some way they need to take a look at the back end of the schedule — at least for anybody who's in the final game — because it's almost like you getting penalized for winning it, schedule wise."

Brown detailed what it meant for the Knicks — immediately flying to Indiana, then heading home for games Friday against Philadelphia and Sunday against Miami. Then the Knicks are off toMinnesotafor Tuesday's game before Thursday's matinee.

It's not just the schedule causing issues for the Knicks, though.

In the first matchup between last season's Eastern Conference finalists, both teams were short-handed.

Four injured players will continue to sit out for the Pacers — guards Tyrese Haliburton and Ben Sheppard along with forwards Aaron Nesmith and Obi Toppin. New York, meanwhile, will play without centers Karl-Anthony Towns and Mitchell Robinson as well as guards Josh Hart, Deuce McBride and Landry Shamet.

All nine are out with injuries.

Plus, Brown acknowledged he didn't follow his minutes limitations sheet as closely as he normally does during the most recent Cup games because he wanted to win the championship. Now, he plans to revert to his more traditional regular-season philosophy.

"Now we're back to our regular-season games, so minutes will go down to what I think they should be at for the rest of the season," Brown said. "So I'll go back to watching guys' minutes more carefully, which is going to give other guys an opportunity."

As for the Knicks' decision not to hang a banner, Brown called it an "organizational" decision. But he certainly thinks there's value to earning the title of Cup champs.

"What I did tell them was exactly what I just said, 'Hey, heck of a month. Cherish this. We can talk about this for the rest of our lives, we can talk about this with our grandkids,'" Brown said. "But there's more to this season. This is a taste of what we can do. We can't afford to get comfortable because of winning it. We've got to go back to work."

NEED TO KNOW

  • Tom Brady has thoughts about returning to the NFL

  • The seven-time Super Bowl champ offered a hypothetical scenario in a guest spot on The Big Podcast with Shaq

  • "Give me a month, I mean, I could go play with anybody."Brady, 48, said

Tom Bradycould un-unretire — if he wanted to.

"I'd whoop ass right now," Brady, 48, toldShaquille O'Nealand his co-host Adam Lefkoe onThe Big Podcast with Shaqon Wednesday, Dec. 17. "I could go out there and play. Give me a month, I mean, I could go play with anybody."

In the wake of 44-year-oldPhilip Rivers giving the NFL another go-round, the future Hall of Fame quarterback pondered what would happen if he were to do the same.

"Like I said, I took care of my body great," Brady said.

But the Fox Sports lead analyst would take a hard pass on playing an entire season.

"I could do it all," he said. "I, just, what I wouldn't want to do is make the commitment to play… it's like basketball season, do you really want to make the commitment to playing 82 games? That takes a lot of training and it's like I don't want to do that anymore."

After 23 seasons in the NFL, the seven-time Super Bowl champ keeps busy these days in the broadcasting booth and in the owner's suite as a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders.

But in light of Rivers' return to the Indianapolis Colts last Sunday, Dec. 14 with four games left in the regular season, Brady offered a caveat to his hypothetical scenario.

When Lefkoe asked if he could "come back for just the finals," Brady responded: "Okay, yeah, just the finals."

As far as Rivers is concerned, returning to the league comes with extra perks.

When he made his debut on Sunday, nearly five years after he retired from the league, the father of 10 and grandfather of one threw for 120 yards, one touchdown and one interception — andnetted five extra years of insurance benefitsfor his real-life teammates at home.

Why Colorado basketball played game without fans: 'Kind of a weird night'

University ofColoradoofficials closed their basketball arena to the public Wednesday night because of weather-related hazards, forcing its men's basketball team to play in an empty building during an84-73 win Dec. 17 against Portland State.

Colorado madethe announcementbefore the game as wind gusts reachedan estimated 96 mph near Boulder, whipping up debris, snapping treesand endangering travelers.

"Due to high winds, power outages around Boulder, and potentially hazardous road conditions, tonight's men's basketball game against Portland State will be played without fans," the announcement stated. "The CU Events Center will be closed to the public."

TheBuffaloesproceeded to improve to 10-1 by generating their own energy in what felt like a closed scrimmage or throwback to the 2020-21 season, when fans weren't allowed at games because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Freshman guard Isaiah Johnson came off the bench to score 20 points.

"Kind of a weird night tonight for the Buffaloes," Colorado coachTad Boylesaid afterward.

Boyle jokingly added that he'd like to petition the NCAA to rule the game as a neutral-site contest instead of a home game.

"I doubt if I'll win that, but it might help our NET ranking," he said.

The university said fans with paid tickets to the game would be issued a single-use promo code for tickets to the next home game against Northern Colorado on Dec. 28.

Playoff berth within Bills' grasp in matchup vs. hapless Browns

The Buffalo Bills look to clinch a playoff berth for the seventh consecutive season on Sunday when they visit the Cleveland Browns.

The Bills (10-4) also have an eye on first place in the AFC East after overcoming a 21-point deficit in a 35-31 victory over the New England Patriots (11-3) last Sunday. Buffalo has won the division title in each of the last five seasons.

First things first for the Bills, who need a win over the Browns and either a loss by the Houston Texans (9-5) or Indianapolis Colts (8-6) in order to punch their ticket to the playoffs.

Buffalo boasts the NFL's top rushing offense (158.5 per game) and is third in the league in both total yards per game (381.2) and points per game (29.4).

Josh Allen has a hand in all three of those statistics, given that the reigning NFL MVP has a total of 37 touchdowns (25 passing, 12 rushing) on the season. He threw for three scores in last week's game against the Patriots, while James Cook rolled up 111 scrimmage yards and three touchdowns (two rushing, one receiving).

"We've been tested in terms of being in some close games and some tight games, and we found ways to win some. We've lost a couple, but I feel like we've learned a lot from those losses," Allen said. "This is an extremely tight unit. We do practice what we preach when we say we love each other and we care about each other and we don't want to let each other down."

Dawson Knox had two touchdown receptions last week and could see additional playing time if fellow tight end Dalton Kincaid is hindered by his knee injury. Kincaid joined defensive tackle Jordan Phillips (ankle), kicker Matt Prater (right quad) and left tackle Dion Dawkins (illness) in failing to practice in Wednesday's walk-through practice session.

Buffalo cornerback Christian Benford (toe) and linebacker Terrel Bernard (elbow) were limited on Wednesday after sitting out last weekend's game.

The Bills signed kicker Michael Badgley to the practice squad earlier in the week. He is expected to be elevated to play in Sunday's game.

While the Bills have won three in a row, the Browns (3-11) dropped their third consecutive contest following a lopsided 31-3 setback against the host Chicago Bears last Sunday.

Rookie Shedeur Sanders struggled mightily as the final score might suggest, throwing for just 177 yards and an NFL career-high three interceptions.

Cleveland head coach Kevin Stefanski, however, was quick to praise the fifth-round pick for brushing off that performance and keeping his focus toward the team's next game.

"He's got the same attitude every single day, which you expect from quarterbacks. You have to, in this league, be able to turn the page after a loss," Stefanski said Wednesday about Sanders. "You've got to be able to turn the page after a win. You just can't take that previous game with you, and I think he does a great job of that."

Sanders will face a tall task in challenging the Bills, who boast the second-stingiest passing defense (169.5 yards per game) in the NFL.

The Browns had nine players fail to participate in practice on Wednesday, including Myles Garrett -- albeit for rest purposes. The star defensive end earned the breather after collecting 1.5 sacks last week to boost his season total to 21.5, one shy of tying the NFL record shared by Michael Strahan (in 2001) and T.J. Watt (in 2021).

Also failing to practice on Wednesday were tight end David Njoku (knee), guard Joel Bitonio (knee), tackle Jack Conklin (concussion) and cornerback Denzel Ward (calf), among others.

Green Bay basketball coach Doug Gottlieb stepping away from radio show

Green Bay men's basketball coach Doug Gottlieb plans to "take a break" from his radio show. Gottlieb wants to put his complete focus on his coaching duties.

The former Oklahoma State guard was hosting a national sports talk radio show before he was hired by Green Bay in May 2025.

"As of now, we're going to take a break from it," Gottlieb said in his news conference after Green Bay's 67-64 victory over UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday. "I've got to have a life. I've got to be there for these kids. I've got to really dig in because we're building something cool here."

Gottlieb expects to continue doing his podcast.

Green Bay has won two of its last three games since Gottlieb expressed his frustration after an 80-78 loss to Robert Morris on Dec. 4.Gottlieb was caught on camera throwing a chairon his way back to the locker room following that loss.

Green Bay was up by as many as 11 points with 3:54 left in the second half. But the Colonials cut Green Bay's lead down to two points with 35.7 seconds left, when the Phoenix were called for a 10-second violation after not advancing the ball past midcourt.

Robert Morris made a go-ahead 3-pointer and Green Bay made just one of two free throw attempts to leave the game tied. Nikolaos Chitikoudis provided Robert Morris with the victory after making the winning layup with 2.4 seconds left to play.
