Cowboys cornerback DaRon Bland may need another surgery on his foot, AP source says

DALLAS (AP) — Dallas Cowboys cornerback DaRon Bland faces the possibility of surgery on the same foot that sidelined the 2023 All-Pro for 10 games last season, a person with knowledge of the injury said Thursday night.

A final decision on surgery hasn't been made as Bland seeks a second opinion, the person told The Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity because the team wasn't releasing details of Bland's status.

Bland showed up on the injury report with a foot issue this week and didn't practice Wednesday or Thursday. Regardless of the decision on surgery, Bland's season is probably over with three games to go.

The Cowboys (6-7-1) are on the brink of playoff elimination with the Los Angeles Chargers (10-4) visiting Sunday. LA has a chance to clinch a postseason berth.

Bland set an NFL record two seasons ago by returning five interceptions for touchdowns but missed the first 10 games last year after surgery for a stress fracture in his left foot late in the preseason. Bland played the remaining seven games.

The 26-year-old missed two games early this seasondealing with discomfort in his right foot. Bland signed a$92 million, four-year extensionfour days before the season started. The contract includes $50 million guaranteed.

Largely ignored out of high school before playing for Sacramento State and later Fresno State, Bland led the Cowboys with five interceptions as a rookie fifth-round pick in 2022.

Bland led the NFL with nine interceptions while setting his TD return record, giving him 14 picks over two seasons. He has just one interception since. Assuming he doesn't play again this season, Bland will have missed 12 games over two seasons.

The injury to Bland, who is second on the team in tackles behind linebacker Kenneth Murray, comes as the Cowboys have to decide whether to activate fellow cornerback Trevon Diggs, who hasn't played since a 30-27 loss at Carolina in Week 6.

Diggs sustained a concussionin an accident at home the week after the loss to the Panthers, and the team says knee issues have kept him on injured reserve. Diggs had knee surgery each of the past two years.

The Cowboys opened Diggs' 21-day practice window Nov. 30 for a possible return from IR. His season will be over if he isn't activated for the game against the Chargers.

LISTEN: Denver's Zach Allen says Broncos are treating matchup against Jaguars like a playoff game

Broncos Pro Bowl defensive lineman Zach Allen talks about the team's quest for a division title and the AFC's No. 1 seed, this week's matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars, his success in defensive coordinator Vance Joseph's system and the winning culture coach Sean Payton brought to the organization.

Various NFL Players: Hey, this is Russell Wilson. This is Joe Montana. This is Dak Prescott. Hey, this is Jason Kelce. You're listening to Rob Maaddi. Rob Maaddi, Rob Maaddi, Rob Maaddi.

MAADDI: Welcome to On Football, I'm Rob Maaddi. Three weeks left in the regular season. The playoff picture should get a bit more clear after this weekend. The Chiefs were eliminated and also in the process, lost Patrick Mahomes to an ACL injury. Micah Parsons also tore his ACL last week, losing two of the NFL's best players. It really stinks for the NFL. And you don't have to be a Packers or a Chiefs fan to feel that way. Special guest this week is Denver Broncos defensive lineman Zach Allen. Stay tuned for that conversation.

Tua Tagovailoa was benched by the Dolphins this week. He struggled this season, leads the NFL with 15 interceptions. Miami is six and eight. They've been eliminated from the playoffs. So Tua's future is uncertain, but we know this — he's due $54 million guaranteed in 2026 and releasing him will take a $99 million cap hit to the Dolphins. So they've obviously got a major decision to make. Now, Tua doesn't deserve all of the blame for Miami's failures. Plenty of it should fall on coach Mike McDaniel. We've seen several quarterbacks have success when they got a fresh start somewhere else. Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold, Mac Jones to a certain extent this season in San Francisco. I wouldn't count out Tua Tagovailoa. He could be the next reclamation project.

Zach Allen was a second-team AP All-Pro last season. He's a big part of Denver's stingy defense. The Broncos are 12-2, and they're closing in on a number one seed in the AFC. Zach, welcome to the show. Great to have you on, man. You guys have won 11 games in a row, and I know that you've got first place. You're still trying to clinch that. Number one seed, obviously, is a big deal. We know how important that is for teams who have Super Bowl aspirations. What does that mean for you guys to be at this point in the season where all of this is in line for you?

ALLEN: Yeah, no, I think it definitely was, you know, one of our goals coming in. And, I mean, the team's been really process driven. So we've just been kind of taking it week to week and, you know, try to go 1-0 every week. So the fact that, you know, we're at this point now is definitely, you know, encouraging and showing us that we're doing the right stuff. And hopefully we just keep it going and clinch up, you know, that one seed. But yeah, this week, all the focus on the Jaguars. So it's definitely, it feels like a playoff game, you know, obviously with how well they're doing.

MAADDI: Was there a point in this season, maybe the Philly win, I don't know, maybe a different game, where you guys felt like there was something special happening there, that this team had opportunity to do great things?

ALLEN: Yeah, I think the Philly game was really cool, just because obviously, you know, how good Philly is, but also, too, last year, we lost a lot of close, kind of one-square games. So, you now, then, you we go into Philly and find a way to pull it out, come from behind, and then, yeah, it seemed like we kind of just went on a little stretch of, you, know, being in those tight fourth quarter moments and figure out when those games, you know between the Jets, the Giants, you know kind of so on. And yeah, you, it was something that we definitely focused on, it's awesome. Something you know situational football is definitely a focus when we came in April and during training camp so yeah the fact that it's paying off is huge.

MAADDI: You mentioned the Jaguars this week. They've won five in a row. What are you seeing on film from Trevor Lawrence and that offense that makes them such a challenge?

ALLEN: I think, you know, they've always had a talent and then obviously, you know, with, uh, no, Liam Coen, you know, the scheme is, is, you know, top notch. It's, you don't cut it in, you know, tested throughout the years between the Rams, when he was in Tampa, everything and, um, you know, it works in this league. And yeah, I mean, Trevor, you know, he's playing, you know, MVP, you know, level of all right now. Everybody kind of saw what he did last week. And then, you know, up front, it's a really, you know, it was a big, fast group that works together. And then the skill positions, even with missing some guys, they're still super explosive. You know, Travis Etienne, I've known him since college. You know being BC versus Clemson, he looks like a stud. And, you, know, the fact that they got Jakobi Meyers now and everybody knows kind of how Brian Thomas did last year. You know the tight ends, you know, they can block and catch. So it's going to be a challenge for us, you know definitely on defense, but we're excited for it.

MAADDI: Part of a defense that is one of the best in the league, stingy defense, and there's so many different guys, right? Patrick Surtain last year was defensive player of the year. You got Nik Bonitto. You've got all these. What's it feel like to know that, hey, even if I don't make the play, there's someone else who can make that play, how much pressure does that take off of you individually?

ALLEN: It's definitely, the reason why I came here fromArizona, was because you want to play with great players. And when you do that, it creates one-on-one opportunities. And like you said, any given day, it's going to be someone who's just going to take over, whoever has a hot hand. And the best part of it too is just, it's a really unselfish group. You're especially rushing with Nik, J.F.M., Coop. You know, we do just a really good job of, you know, understanding, you now, keeping the quarterback in the pocket, not taking crazy shots, and you know kind of just spreading the love. So, playing here has been awesome and definitely been a blessing.

MAADDI: When you went from Arizona to Denver, Vance Joseph is there as a defensive coordinator. I mean, it seems like you were a great player in the past and you thrived, right? Last year, second team All-Pro. You've thrived in this system, in this scheme. What is it about the system, this scheme playing for Vance Joseph that's allowed you to kind of showcase that talent?

ALLEN: Vance has been awesome my whole career, and definitely since coming here, I think he's just done such a good job. Like I said earlier, creating those one-on-one matchups, and then if you're in the NFL, if you get a one-one-one matchup, that's all you can ask for. So yeah, we take a lot of pride in winning those. We put in a lot of work together, extra everything to try to win those. And even this year, we've been just rushing forward. You know, playing seven in coverage and we're still finding ways to win and, you know, God, they're getting double-teamed. But, you now, if they're double team with one guy, you know, it's going to free up somebody else on our line. And the fact that we're so deep on fun has been huge. So it's, it's been really fun.

MAADDI: Your first year there was Sean Payton's first year as head coach. What is it about his style, his leadership and ability that's been able to turn the organization, the culture around so quickly?

ALLEN: Yeah, I think he just does a great job of, you know, kind of, like you said, like that culture was the biggest thing coming in. You know, he was really clear from day one what he expected of guys. And, you know, at the same time, too, it's just he brings in really good people. Him and George do a great job of bringing in good guys who work hard and do it the right way. And I think this offseason was really cool because you saw how many guys needed a season, you know, we've been. You know, handing extensions to and it's kind of proven to the whole locker room. You do it the right way, you're going to get rewarded. And, uh, yeah, I mean, he's been, he has been awesome since coming here. The guys love it. And I think there's definitely a reason why you just seen the Broncos kind of take off since he's come in.

MAADDI: I know you're focused on team goals, but what does stuff like the Pro Bowl and All-Pro mean to you if you're able to achieve those again?

ALLEN: Yeah, I mean, it's huge, obviously, like you said, like Super Bowl is goal number one, but you know, the All-Pro and the Pro Bowl, you know it's something as a kid, you know you dream of. And I think it also too is kind of just, you know a testament to how much work we put in and also too it's nice for the people that support you here, whether it's your family, your teammates, coaches, everybody that kind of helped you get to that spot. So, you know being the second team All-Pro last year was a really cool moment, especially kind of considering how my career's gone, you know the ups and downs. You know, my first four years in Arizona. So, yeah, hopefully we can do it again, be first team.

MAADDI: Time for some Pro Picks. 2-2 last week straight up and against the spread. Overall this season 43-16-1 straight up, 36-22-1 against the number. Best bet this week, looking at two teams going nowhere. Cincinnati, 4-10, at Miami, 6-8. Bengals are four-point favorites, started at two and a half, went up when Tua Tagovailoa was benched. Now the Bengals were shut out last week by the Ravens. Teams that have been shut out this season are 5-0 against the spread the following game. The Bengals have Joe Burrow, the Dolphins are giving rookie Quinn Ewers his first career start. I'm going Bengals, 27-17. For the upset special, go into Los Angeles Chargers, 10-4, at Dallas, 6-7-1. The Cowboys could be eliminated by the time this game kicks off, yet they're 2.5-point favorites. Justin Herbert has toughed out two straight wins for the Chargers since he had left wrist surgery. Jesse Minter's defense, I think they're gonna be a big challenge for Dak Prescott and Dallas' offense. Cowboys have nothing left to play for but a winning record. Herbert is 17-12-1 against the spread as an underdog. Chargers, 22-20. Next up, looking at Pittsburgh, 8-6, at Detroit. They're 8-6. The Lions are seven-point favorites. Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers, they're back on top in the AFC North with no margin for error. They got the Ravens one game behind and they face each other later in the season. They've got a difficult challenge this week coming off a Monday night win. The Lions have to win out and get help to make the playoffs. Jared Goff and coach Dan Campbell have won 15 straight games after a loss. 14-1 against the spread in that spot. Lions, 26-17. Last, a rematch of the NFC championship game that lost its luster when the Commanders completely fell apart months ago. Philadelphia, 9-5, at Washington, 4-10. Eagles are 6.5-point favorites. Jalen Hurts had an excellent game. The Eagles got back on track last week against the awful Raiders. They're a win away from becoming the first team in two decades to win the NFC East in consecutive seasons. Back up Marcus Mariota starts instead of Jayden Daniels for Washington, the Commanders are left for playing for draft positioning, Eagles, 27-16.

That's it for this week. Thank you to Zach Allen. Thank you for listening to On Football. And thanks to Haya Panjwani and Guillermo Gonzalez for producing this episode. Please check out APNews.com for the full Pro Picks, On Football analysis and more NFL news.

WNBA players union authorizes negotiators to call a strike if needed during CBA talks

NEW YORK (AP) — WNBA players have authorized their union's executive council to call a strike if necessary, the union announced Thursday as it continues to negotiate a collective bargaining agreement with the league.

The WNBPA and league have been negotiating a new agreement for the past few months, extending the deadlinea couple of times with the latest one set to expire Jan. 9. The move gives union negotiators another tool to use in talks.

"The players' decision is an unavoidable response to the state of negotiations with the WNBA and its teams," the union said in a statement. "Time and again, the players' thoughtful and reasonable approach has been met by the WNBA and its teams with a resistance to change and a recommitment to the draconian provisions that have unfairly restricted players for nearly three decades."

The union said there was overwhelming support in the vote to allow the executive council to call for a strike when it sees fit. With 93% of players voting, 98% voted yes to authorize a strike if needed.

"The players' vote is neither a call for an immediate strike nor an intention to pursue one. Rather, it is an emphatic affirmation of the players' confidence in their leadership," the statement said.

A strike could delay the WNBA expansion draft and the beginning of free agency that usually starts in late January. The season itself isn't expected to begin until late April or early May.

Players and owners have been meeting regularly to negotiate. Increased salaries and revenue sharing are two big areas that the sides aren't close on.

The WNBA said in a statement it was aware of the players' decision but "remains steadfast in its commitment to reaching an agreement as soon as possible and delivering a 30th season for the players, fans, teams, and partners."

"While we acknowledge the players' right to authorize a future work stoppage, we strongly disagree with the WNBPA's characterization of the current state of negotiations, which fundamentally misrepresents the ongoing discussions taking place at the bargaining table," the league said. "It is difficult to understand claims that the league is resistant to change, particularly given that we are proposing numerous CBA modifications including significant immediate salary increases and a new uncapped revenue-sharing model that would ensure continued salary growth tied to revenue growth."

The league's most recent offer would guarantee a maximum base salary of $1 million in 2026 that could reach $1.3 million through revenue sharing. That's up from the current $249,000 and could grow to nearly $2 million over the life of the agreement, a person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press.

The average salary in 2026 would be more than $530,000, up from its current $120,000, and grow to more than $770,000 over the life of the agreement. The minimum salary would grow from its current $67,000 to more than $250,000 in the first year, the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the details were to remain private.

Napheesa Collier, who is on the executive council, said in a Zoom earlier this week that players are also fighting for child care and retirement benefits. She acknowledged that revenue sharing remains the main issue, which is why other topics haven't been talked about as much.

"I don't think there's fatigue," Collier said. "Obviously, there's frustration in that both sides are trying to get what they want, but we still have that fire within us that we're willing to do what it takes. We're going to do whatever it takes to get what we think we deserve."

Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clarksaid at USA Basketball camplast week that this was the "biggest moment in the history" of the league.

"It's not something that can be messed up," Clark said.

"We're going to fight for everything we deserve, but at the same time we need to play basketball. That's what our fans crave. You want the product on the floor. In the end of the day that's how you're marketable, that's what the fans want to show up for."

Retired NASCAR driver Greg Biffle and family among 7 killed in North Carolina plane crash

STATESVILLE,N.C. (AP) — A business jet crashed Thursday while trying to return to a North Carolina airport shortly after takeoff, killing all seven people aboard, including retired NASCAR driverGreg Biffleand his family, authorities said.

The Cessna C550 erupted into a large fire when it hit the ground. It had departed Statesville Regional Airport, about 45 miles (72 kilometers) north of Charlotte, but sooncrashedwhile trying to return and land, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said.

Flight records show the plane was registered to a company run by Biffle. The cause of the crash wasn't immediately known, nor was the reason for the plane's return to the airport in drizzle and cloudy conditions.

Biffle was on the plane with his wife, Cristina, and children Ryder, 5, and Emma, 14, according to the highway patrol and a family statement. Others on the plane were identified as Dennis Dutton, his son Jack, and Craig Wadsworth.

"Each of them meant everything to us, and their absence leaves an immeasurable void in our lives," the joint family statement said.

Biffle, 55, won more than 50 races across NASCAR's three circuits, including 19 at the Cup Series level. He also won the Trucks Series championship in 2000 and the Xfinity Series title in 2002.

NASCAR said it was devastated by the news.

"Greg was more than a champion driver; he was a beloved member of the NASCAR community, a fierce competitor, and a friend to so many," NASCAR said. "His passion for racing, his integrity, and his commitment to fans and fellow competitors alike made a lasting impact on the sport."

The plane, bound forFlorida, took off from the Statesville airport shortly after 10 a.m., according to tracking data posted byFlightAware.com.

Golfers playing next to the airport were shocked as they witnessed the disaster, even dropping to the ground at the Lakewood Golf Club while the plane was overhead. The ninth hole was covered with debris.

"We were like, 'Oh my gosh! That's way too low,'" said Joshua Green of Mooresville. "It was scary."

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration were investigating.

The Cessna plane, built in 1981, is a popular mid-sized business jet with an excellent reputation, aviation safety expert Jeff Guzzetti said. It has two engines and typically seats six to eight passengers.

In 2024, Biffle was honored for his humanitarian efforts after Hurricane Helene struck the U.S., even using his personal helicopter to deliver aid to flooded, remote western North Carolina.

"The last time I spoke with Cristina, just a couple of weeks ago, she reached out to ask how she could help with relief efforts in Jamaica. That's who the Biffles were," U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson, a Republican from North Carolina, said.

Wadsworth was Biffle's friend and helped him with odd jobs, including delivering supplies to places hit by Hurricane Helene, roommate Benito Howell said.

"He didn't know how to say no," Howell said of Wadsworth, who had worked for several NASCAR teams. "He loved everybody. He always tried to help everybody."

The joint family statement also spoke about Dutton and his son Jack, saying they were "deeply loved as well, and their loss is felt by all who knew them."

With 2025 almost over, there have been 1,331 U.S. crashes this year investigated by the NTSB, from two-seat planes to commercial aircraft, compared to a total of 1,482 in 2024.

Major air disasters around the world in 2025 include theplane-helicopter collisionthat killed 67 in Washington, the Air India crashthat killed 260 in India, and a crash inRussia's Far Eastthat claimed 48 lives. Fourteen people, including 11 on the ground, died in aUPS cargo planecrash inKentucky.

Spurs? Heat? Knicks? Best Giannis Antetokounmpo trade fits

The NBA trade deadline is still a little less than two months away, but the rumor mill nonetheless is red hot. And no player is generating more buzz than Giannis Antetokounmpo.

This was magnified whenAntetokounmpo scrubbed his social media accountsof nearly all mentions of theMilwaukee Bucks.

Realistically, just about every team in the NBA could use a player like Antetokounmpo; the questions are whether he asks out from the Bucks and becomes available, and which team might actually deploy the assets necessary to execute the deal.

Antetokounmpo reportedly favors the Knicks as a destination, but reports have also cited that Antetokounmpo favors big markets and warmth. That limits possible destinations to just a few teams.

Here's a ranking of possible trade destinations for Giannis Antetokounmpo based on fit.

Oct. 26: The Dallas Mavericks' Cooper Flagg dunks the ball past the Toronto Raptors' Sandro Mamukelashvili at the American Airlines Center. Oct. 26: The Washington Wizards' Cam Whitmore dunks the ball against the Charlotte Hornets at Capital One Arena. <p style=Oct. 26: The Brooklyn Nets' Michael Porter Jr. dunks in front of the San Antonio Spurs' Victor Wembanyama at Frost Bank Center.

Giannis Antetokounmpo trade fits

5. Los Angeles Lakers

This is one where, although the Lakers may covet this deal, and although it makes a lot of sense on the floor, they simply don't have the assets necessary to entice the Bucks. This is particularly the case if shipping Ausin Reaves is a nonstarter.

Los Angeles will indeed be looking for a star player to eventually replace LeBron James, who is on an expiring contract, so Antetokounmpo does make some sense here.

But Reaves has developed a solid rapport with Luka Dončić, and his contract status makes a trade, at least right now, an improbability. He's locked in through the 2026-27 season, but makes an average of just $14.4 million per season. The Lakers would need to move a ton of additional salary simply to make the deal work, or involve other teams. For L.A. to have a practical shot, this would have to wait for the offseason, when it would have more first-round picks to trade.

4. New York Knicks

Although it may be the spot Antetokounmpo prefers most, it's an unconventional fit. The Knicks already have a ball-dominant player in Jalen Brunson, a two-time consecutive All-Star who pushes his way into the paint just as easily as he can knock down perimeter shots.

The potential issue here is that New York has built its offense around a steady diet of 3-point shots; the Knicks rank fourth in the NBA in makes (15.1 per game), seventh in attempts (39.9) and fourth in 3-point shooting percentage (37.8%). Karl-Anthony Towns, the stretch center who would almost certainly be shipped in a potential trade, is an essential part in creating the spacing necessary for the offense to flow — not to mention his range and ability to hit them from any spot in the halfcourt.

Antetokounmpo's strength is pushing pace and getting to the rim. The Knicks have, at times, looked to play quicker, so it's not that this fit is unsustainable, it's just more than New York would need to adapt its offensive thesis somewhat to accommodate Antetokounmpo.

3. Houston Rockets

The question here is what Houston would be willing to give up. The Rockets have a ton of promising, young players — exactly the kind of assets that Milwaukee would want in an Antetokounmpo deal. But, given the salary swaps that would need to take place, this is a trade that might be difficult to execute on paper.

On the floor, however, it would make the Rockets the longest and most diversely athletic roster in the NBA, even if it were forced to trade Amen Thompson and Alperen Şengün. The question would be if Houston's shooting around Kevin Durant and Antetokounmpo would be enough to compete against tough defensive teams like the Thunder.

But the Rockets already have a nice balance of veterans and emerging stars. Şengün is only 23 and Thompson is even younger at 22. The Rockets went all-in on this build; they might be better served just riding it out.

2. Miami Heat

In terms of the offense they run, the Heat might be the most seamless fit. Miami, lacking a player who thrives on pick-and-rolls, completely overhauled its offense to focus on pace, transition and a free-flowing, abstract structure. The Heat don't run very many plays. They rarely set screens.

They can put the ball in Antetokounmpo's hands and let him attack defenses, allowing for kickout opportunities for Norman Powell, Davion Mitchell and other shooters. It also eases the pressure on Bam Adebayo to create in the paint and should create more mid-range and perimeter shot opportunities.

The Heat likely would need to include Tyler Herro, promising young center Kel'el Ware and a number of picks. It's unclear if that would be enough for Milwaukee. But with a coach like Erik Spoelstra and an adaptable staff, there's no reason to think Antetokounmpo wouldn't shine in Miami.

1. San Antonio Spurs

Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo (34) drives to the basket while defended by San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama.

The Spurs have young guards in Dylan Harper, Stephon Castle and De'Aaron Fox. And though San Antonio may not want to part with any, pairing Victor Wembanyama with Antetokounmpo would be fascinating. That would give the Spurs the most athletically gifted frontcourt in NBA history.

It would make the prospect of scoring in the paint on San Antonio an absolute nightmare. It also makes the idea of a Wembanyama-Antetokounmpo pick-and-roll a nightmare to defend.

This would be a move that would directly address Oklahoma City's supremacy — the team the Spurs just toppled in the NBA Cup semifinal — in the Western Conference. The Spurs are middle of the pack in pace (100.88; 16th), so San Antonio might do better to pick up its transition opportunities with Antetokounmpo on the floor. But as long as San Antonio would retain some perimeter shooting in a trade, this would make the Spurs a legitimate NBA Finals threat.

Knicks coach Mike Brown would like league officials to consider post-NBA Cup scheduling changes

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — New York Knicks coach Mike Brown believes that while there are benefits to winning the NBA Cup, league officials should address the post-tournament scheduling in the future.

The first-year coach rattled off the grueling stretch the Knicks now face after beating San Antonio124-113 on Tuesday nightin Las Vegas. The eight-day run that features five games in three different cities is capped by a noon tip at home Christmas Day against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

"Basically, I've been here for a week praising the NBA. The Cup is fun and first class and all that other staff," Brown said before Thursday's game atIndiana. "But somehow, some way they need to take a look at the back end of the schedule — at least for anybody who's in the final game — because it's almost like you getting penalized for winning it, schedule wise."

Brown detailed what it meant for the Knicks — immediately flying to Indiana, then heading home for games Friday against Philadelphia and Sunday against Miami. Then the Knicks are off toMinnesotafor Tuesday's game before Thursday's matinee.

It's not just the schedule causing issues for the Knicks, though.

In the first matchup between last season's Eastern Conference finalists, both teams were short-handed.

Four injured players will continue to sit out for the Pacers — guards Tyrese Haliburton and Ben Sheppard along with forwards Aaron Nesmith and Obi Toppin. New York, meanwhile, will play without centers Karl-Anthony Towns and Mitchell Robinson as well as guards Josh Hart, Deuce McBride and Landry Shamet.

All nine are out with injuries.

Plus, Brown acknowledged he didn't follow his minutes limitations sheet as closely as he normally does during the most recent Cup games because he wanted to win the championship. Now, he plans to revert to his more traditional regular-season philosophy.

"Now we're back to our regular-season games, so minutes will go down to what I think they should be at for the rest of the season," Brown said. "So I'll go back to watching guys' minutes more carefully, which is going to give other guys an opportunity."

As for the Knicks' decision not to hang a banner, Brown called it an "organizational" decision. But he certainly thinks there's value to earning the title of Cup champs.

"What I did tell them was exactly what I just said, 'Hey, heck of a month. Cherish this. We can talk about this for the rest of our lives, we can talk about this with our grandkids,'" Brown said. "But there's more to this season. This is a taste of what we can do. We can't afford to get comfortable because of winning it. We've got to go back to work."
