Trail Blazers outlast Kings 134-133 in overtime on Avdija's late free throws

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Deni Avdija made two free throws with 1.5 seconds left in overtime for the last of his 35 points, and the Portland Trail Blazers outlasted the Sacramento Kings 134-133 on Thursday night to open a home-and-home set.

The teams will meet again Saturday night in Sacramento.

DeMar DeRozan hit a jumper with four seconds left to give the Kings a 133-132 lead. With no timeouts, Portland raced down the court and Avdija was fouled by Russell Westbrook. DeRozan's 3-pointer with eight seconds left forced overtime, completing a 17-2 run in the final 2:28 of regulation.

DeRozan led Sacramento with 33 points, with 22 of the points coming in the fourth quarter and overtime. He was 3 of 4 from 3-point range, 10 of 16 overall from the field and made all 10 of his free throws.

Avdija was 12 for 19 from the field and made 10 of 12 free throws. The shooting guard also had five assists and five turnovers.

Shaedon Sharpe added 26 points for Portland, hitting 4 of 6 3-pointers. Jerami Grant scored 20 points, Donovan Clingan had 19 and Toumani Camara 17.

Maxime Raynaud added a career-high 29 points for Sacramento. Westbrook had 20 points and 10 assists. He was 8 of 11 from the field.

LeBron James cites 'Luka magic' as Doncic has 45-point triple-double

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — LeBron James was in awe of "Luka magic" after Luka Doncic had 45 points, 14 assists and 11 rebounds in his fifth triple-double of the season ina 143-135 win over the Utah Jazzon Thursday night.

"That's Luka. Luka magic! It's no surprise. He's just so damn good, it's ridiculous," said James, who had 28 points and 10 assists for the Lakers.

Doncic had his first 40-point triple-double as a Laker since arriving last season became the second player to have a 45-point triple double with five steals since the NBA began keeping track of steals. Cade Cunningham was first.

But the statistic that made Doncic smile the most in the postgame press conference was his single turnover.

"One turnover is the best thing on this stat sheet. We have seven turnovers, which is impressive for us, and we won the game," Doncic said.

The Lakers led by 12 in the fourth quarter but the Jazz cut it to 134-130 before Doncic found Jaxson Hayes for his final assist and the cushion the Lakers needed to clinch the win.

He had a running conversation with a Jazz fan courtside and yelled, "Sit down" and "How are you doing now?" after Hayes threw down emphatic dunk off Doncic's lob.

Despite constant traps and doubles from the Jazz, Doncic had 10 points in the fourth as the Lakers outscored the Jazz 41-29.

For more than two decades, James has been accustomed to being the playmaker and the focus of his team's offense. Now Doncic is the point, the trigger of the offensive attack, especially in crunch time.

The Lakers improved to 10-0 this season in crunch time with Doncic at the controls.

"It's pretty awesome to be 10-0 in the clutch, and 12-3 on the road too, which is not easy," Doncic said.

Marcus Smart was the recipient of two Doncic assists for 3-pointers during a fourth-quarter surge as the Jazz tried to double and trap Doncic.

Many of the Lakers — including Smart and Doncic who got technical fouls — were frustrated with the tightly-called game but Luka's composure when it mattered most impressed Smart.

"It was big-time for us. He stayed in there mentally. I know he was very frustrated, but he kept his composure, held it together and did what he does best. He controlled his team and helped us come up with this victory," Smart said.

The Lakers were missing Austin Reaves and Deandre Ayton to injury but Doncic made sure that would not be an excuse.

"There are stretches of excellence but there are stretches where he's not as engaged and isn't executing our stuff defensive … but he played certainly well enough to lead us to a win. He and LeBron had 28 assists and three turnovers," Los Angeles coach JJ Redick said.

Doncic agreed.

"Honestly, I could do some more," Doncic said, despite his historic night.

Federal regulators to begin sifting through wreckage of North Carolina plane crash that killed 7

STATESVILLE,N.C. (AP) — Federal investigators on Friday will begin sifting through the wreckage of a business jet that crashed in North Carolina and killed all seven people aboard, including retired NASCAR driverGreg Biffleand his family.

The Cessna C550 erupted into a large fire when it hit the ground Thursday. It had departed Statesville Regional Airport, about 45 miles (72 kilometers) north of Charlotte, but sooncrashedwhile trying to return and land, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said.

Flight records show the plane was registered to a company run by Biffle. The cause of the crash wasn't immediately known, nor was the reason for the plane's return to the airport in drizzle and cloudy conditions.

Federal Aviation Administration records show Biffle was rated to fly helicopters and single and multi-engine planes. It wasn't clear if Biffle was piloting the plane at the time of the crash.

Biffle was on the plane with his wife, Cristina, and children Ryder, 5, and Emma, 14, according to the highway patrol and a family statement. Others on the plane were identified as Dennis Dutton, his son Jack, and Craig Wadsworth.

"Each of them meant everything to us, and their absence leaves an immeasurable void in our lives," the joint family statement said.

Biffle, 55, won more than 50 races across NASCAR's three circuits, including 19 at the Cup Series level. He also won the Trucks Series championship in 2000 and the Xfinity Series title in 2002.

NASCAR called Biffle "a beloved member of the NASCAR community, a fierce competitor, and a friend to so many."

"His passion for racing, his integrity, and his commitment to fans and fellow competitors alike made a lasting impact on the sport," NASCAR said.

The plane, bound forFlorida, took off from the Statesville airport shortly after 10 a.m., according to tracking data posted byFlightAware.com.

Golfers playing next to the airport were shocked as they witnessed the disaster, even dropping to the ground at the Lakewood Golf Club while the plane was overhead. The ninth hole was covered with debris.

"We were like, 'Oh my gosh! That's way too low,'" said Joshua Green of Mooresville. "It was scary."

A team from the National Transportation Safety Board headed to North Carolina on Thursday to investigate. The Federal Aviation Administration is also investigating.

The Cessna plane, built in 1981, is a popular mid-sized business jet with an excellent reputation, aviation safety expert Jeff Guzzetti said. It has two engines and typically seats six to eight passengers and two pilots.

In 2024, Biffle was honored for his humanitarian efforts after Hurricane Helene struck the U.S., even using his personal helicopter to deliver aid to flooded, remote western North Carolina.

"The last time I spoke with Cristina, just a couple of weeks ago, she reached out to ask how she could help with relief efforts in Jamaica. That's who the Biffles were," U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson, a Republican from North Carolina, said.

Wadsworth was Biffle's friend and helped him with odd jobs, including delivering supplies to places hit by Hurricane Helene, roommate Benito Howell said.

"He didn't know how to say no," Howell said of Wadsworth, who had worked for several NASCAR teams. "He loved everybody. He always tried to help everybody."

The joint family statement also spoke about Dutton and his son Jack, saying they were "deeply loved as well, and their loss is felt by all who knew them."

With 2025 almost over, there have been 1,331 U.S. crashes this year investigated by the NTSB, from two-seat planes to commercial aircraft, compared to a total of 1,482 in 2024.

Major air disasters around the world in 2025 include theplane-helicopter collisionthat killed 67 in Washington, the Air India crashthat killed 260 in India, and a crash inRussia's Far Eastthat claimed 48 lives. Fourteen people, including 11 on the ground, died in aUPS cargo planecrash inKentucky.

NCAA volleyball Final Four tips off in Kansas City

When is NCAA volleyball national championship game?

No. 3 Texas A&M will face off against No. 1 Kentucky in the national championship game on on Sunday, Dec. 21 (3:30 p.m. ET, ABC) at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City.

Kentucky Wildcats starting lineup

Head coach:Craig Skinner

  • 6 Kassie O'Brien | S 6-1 - Freshman

  • 7 Eva Hudson | OH 6-1 - Senior

  • 10 Kennedy Washington | MB 6-0 - Sophomore

  • 11 Molly Berezowitz | DS 5-5 - Junior

  • 12 Molly Tuozzo | L 5-7 - Junior

  • 15 Lizzie Carr | MB 6-6 - Redshirt Junior

  • 17 Brooklyn DeLeye | OH 6-2 - Junior

X-factor: Brooklyn Deleye, outside hitter

It's unusual to list an AVCA First-team All-American as an X-factor, but Brooklyn Deleye's performance will be paramount against the streaking Aggies. Kentucky got off to a slow start in the first set of their Final Four win over No. 3 Wisconsin—suffering their worst deficit in a set since 2018—due in part to Deleye's early struggles. She hit 15 kills on 50 total attempts, but her dismal .160 hitting percentage marked her third-lowest of the season. The Wildcats and Deleye must come out strong in the national championship and cannot afford to get behind the Aggies.

  • 12 Ava Underwood | L/DS 5-7 - Senior

  • 16 Maddie Waak | S 5-10 - Senior

X-factor: Ifenna Cos-Okpalla, middle blocker

Ifenna Cos-Okpalla is a 2025 AVCA First-Team All-American for a reason. The 6-foot-2 senior middle blocker has been an iron wall this postseason. She leads the Aggies with 195 total blocks and 1.70 blocks per set, which ranks third-best in the nation. Cos-Okpalla has averaged 7.2 blocks for the Aggies in the 2025 NCAA Tournament and her pressure at the net helped

Puka Nacua doubles down on referee critiques in deleted X post

A "tweet-and-delete" unfolded following theWeek 16 "Thursday Night Football" matchupbetween theLos Angeles RamsandSeattle Seahawks.

Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua has had an eventful week. He notched 225 yards and two touchdowns in the loss vs. the Seahawks on "Thursday Night Football." Prior to that, he made a controversial livestream appearance that resultedin an apology for an antisemitic dancehe demonstrated.

On that same stream, Nacua took aim at NFL referees for, what he believes,is a desire for the spotlight. Following the loss on Thursday night, Nacua doubled down on his critiques.

"Can you say i was wrong. Appreciate you stripes for your contribution. Lol,"he said in a now-deleted post.

Puka's message for the officials:pic.twitter.com/MZvfXsnZG5

— Underdog NFL (@UnderdogNFL)December 19, 2025

Officials were involved, especially late during the matchup. The Rams were flagged eight times for 54 yards, including a critical second-and-10 pass interference call on LA cornerback Emmanuel Forbes in overtime.

Notably, officials overturned aquestionable incomplete pass into a fumble recovery and a 2-point conversion, which was the game-tying try in the fourth quarter.

A penalty also negated a long return on the opening kickoff in overtime, but the drive still resulted in a Rams touchdown.

Following the game, head coach Sean McVay said he did not speak with Nacua regarding the post, but ensured that it would get "corrected."

The Seahawks now sit at 12-3 and atop the NFC West.

Three 2-point conversions lead Seahawks' rally for OT win over Rams

Sam Darnold threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Jaxon Smith-Njigba with 3:13 remaining in overtime, then hit backup tight end Eric Saubert with a two-point conversion as the Seattle Seahawks defeated the visiting Los Angeles Rams 38-37 Thursday night.

The Seahawks (12-3) rallied from a 16-point deficit in the fourth quarter to break a tie with the Rams (11-4) atop the NFC West.

Darnold finished 22 of 34 for 270 yards with two TDs and two interceptions. Seattle's Kenneth Walker III rushed for 100 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries and had three receptions for 64 yards. Smith-Njigba made eight catches for 96 yards and a TD, all after halftime.

Los Angeles' Matthew Stafford completed 29 of 49 passes for 457 yards and three touchdowns, the last a 41-yarder to Puka Nacua with 6:27 left in overtime.

The Seahawks subsequently scored on their overtime possession and went for two and the win.

Nacua had 12 catches for a career-high 225 yards and two touchdowns. Rams running backs Kyren Williams and Blake Corum combined to rush for 118 yards on 37 carries.

With Los Angeles ahead 30-14, Rashid Shaheed sparked Seattle's comeback with a 58-yard punt return for a touchdown. Darnold completed a two-point conversion to Cooper Kupp, cutting the Seahawks' deficit to eight with 8:03 to play.

The Seahawks' defense forced a three-and-out and Shaheed went 31 yards on an end around on the next play from scrimmage. Darnold hit a wide open tight end AJ Barner from 26 yards on the next snap with 6:23 to play.

The Seahawks went for two again in an attempt to tie the score, but Darnold's pass was batted down. After a video review, it was determined it was a backward pass, with the Seahawks' Zach Charbonnet recovering the ball in the end zone for an unlikely conversion to knot the score at 30-30.

The Rams' Harrison Mevis, who kicked three field goals, missed a 48-yard attempt with 2:07 left.

Seattle got a first-quarter touchdown from Charbonnet on a 4-yard carry and Los Angeles got a second-quarter TD on a 3-yard pass from Stafford to Terrance Ferguson, and the Rams led 13-7 at halftime.

Both teams played without offensive starters. The Rams' Davante Adams, who leads the league with 14 touchdown receptions, and Seahawks left tackle Charles Cross were both sidelined due to hamstring injuries.

Cowboys cornerback DaRon Bland may need another surgery on his foot, AP source says

DALLAS (AP) — Dallas Cowboys cornerback DaRon Bland faces the possibility of surgery on the same foot that sidelined the 2023 All-Pro for 10 games last season, a person with knowledge of the injury said Thursday night.

A final decision on surgery hasn't been made as Bland seeks a second opinion, the person told The Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity because the team wasn't releasing details of Bland's status.

Bland showed up on the injury report with a foot issue this week and didn't practice Wednesday or Thursday. Regardless of the decision on surgery, Bland's season is probably over with three games to go.

The Cowboys (6-7-1) are on the brink of playoff elimination with the Los Angeles Chargers (10-4) visiting Sunday. LA has a chance to clinch a postseason berth.

Bland set an NFL record two seasons ago by returning five interceptions for touchdowns but missed the first 10 games last year after surgery for a stress fracture in his left foot late in the preseason. Bland played the remaining seven games.

The 26-year-old missed two games early this seasondealing with discomfort in his right foot. Bland signed a$92 million, four-year extensionfour days before the season started. The contract includes $50 million guaranteed.

Largely ignored out of high school before playing for Sacramento State and later Fresno State, Bland led the Cowboys with five interceptions as a rookie fifth-round pick in 2022.

Bland led the NFL with nine interceptions while setting his TD return record, giving him 14 picks over two seasons. He has just one interception since. Assuming he doesn't play again this season, Bland will have missed 12 games over two seasons.

The injury to Bland, who is second on the team in tackles behind linebacker Kenneth Murray, comes as the Cowboys have to decide whether to activate fellow cornerback Trevon Diggs, who hasn't played since a 30-27 loss at Carolina in Week 6.

Diggs sustained a concussionin an accident at home the week after the loss to the Panthers, and the team says knee issues have kept him on injured reserve. Diggs had knee surgery each of the past two years.

The Cowboys opened Diggs' 21-day practice window Nov. 30 for a possible return from IR. His season will be over if he isn't activated for the game against the Chargers.
