No. 7 Gonzaga makes it 20 straight wins vs. San Diego

Jalen Warley recorded a season-best 22 points and a career-high 14 rebounds to help No. 7 Gonzaga defeat host San Diego for the 20th consecutive time, 99-93 in West Coast Conference play on Tuesday night.

Tyon Grant-Foster scored 18 points, Braden Huff had 14 points and eight rebounds and Mario Saint-Supery also scored 14 points for the Bulldogs (14-1, 2-0 WCC), who won their seventh straight game. Gonzaga's Graham Ike added 11 points and nine rebounds.

Ty-Laur Johnson scored 21 points, Juanse Gorosito added 16 points and D'Arrae Goodwin tallied 15 for the Toreros (6-8, 1-1). San Diego's Adrian McIntyre had 12 points, seven rebounds and seven assists while Toneari Lane put up 10 points.

The Toreros are now 1-31 against Gonzaga since recording a 69-62 upset over the Zags in the 2008 West Coast Conference tournament title game. That contest resulted in the Toreros making their most recent appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

Warley's three-point play gave Gonzaga an 83-62 lead with 7:21 left before the Toreros made a furious late comeback bid.

San Diego scored 11 straight points to pull within 98-93 on McIntyre's layup with 11.2 seconds left. San Diego made eight straight shots to end that burst.

Grant-Foster split two free throws with 9.2 seconds left, and Lane missed a 3-point attempt for San Diego as the Bulldogs escaped.

Gonzaga shot 56.5% from the field, including 8 of 18 (44.4%) from 3-point range. The Bulldogs held a dominating 44-27 rebounding advantage. Warley also contributed five assists and three steals.

San Diego connected on 52.4% of its attempts and was 12 of 31 (38.7%) from behind the arc.

Huff made consecutive hoops to give Gonzaga a 70-50 lead with 10:41 remaining, capping a 10-0 surge.

After McIntyre's basket ended the run, Saint-Supery canned a trey to give the Zags a 21-point lead with 9:50 to play.

Warley's three-point play made it 83-62, but San Diego responded with an 18-5 charge, ending with four straight points from Goodwin, to move within 88-80 with 3:12 left.

Warley scored five straight to put the Bulldogs ahead by 16 with 1:38 left before the Toreros made the Zags sweat.

Grant-Foster scored 13 first-half points to help Gonzaga hold a 48-37 lead at the break. Johnson had 10 points in the half for San Diego.

The Toreros led 11-9 after a 3-pointer by Boskovic 4 1/2 minutes into the game.

Steele Venters then drilled a 3-pointer to give the Bulldogs the lead for good, starting a 10-0 run.

The Huskers led by just three at halftime but were much sharper on both ends after that and will ride momentum into Friday night's Big Ten home game against ninth-ranked Michigan State.

Braden Frager scored 15 points and Berke Buyuktuncel added 14 for the Huskers. Jack Graham had 15 of his 17 points in the first half to lead New Hampshire.

Ryan Conwell nets 26 as No. 16 Louisville rolls over Cal

Ryan Conwell scored 26 points for No. 16 Louisville, which won its Atlantic Coast Conference opener for the first time in four seasons by manhandling Cal 90-70 on Tuesday in Berkeley, Calif.

Louisville (11-2, 1-0 ACC) once again was without freshman point guard Mikel Brown Jr., as the five-star recruit missed his third straight game with a back injury. The Cardinals, though, did not miss Brown as they scored the first 10 points and then enjoyed a 12-2 run to go up 31-13 after a Conwell 3-pointer with 8:01 left in the first half.

Adrian Wooley, Brown's substitute in the starting lineup, posted a season-high 21 in the win. Sananda Fru recorded the first double-double of his career as the 6-foot-11 German finished with 13 points and a season-high 14 rebounds.

It didn't matter where Louisville was shooting in the first half, as the Cardinals connected on 54.3% of their shots (19 of 35). They made 8 of 17 3-point attempts and outscored the Golden Bears 22-4 in the paint before the break, and the lead eventually grew to 36-15.

Overall, the Cardinals held Cal to a season-low 33.9% shooting (20 of 59). Chris Bell finished with 20, and Justin Pippen added 17, but the Golden Bears (12-2, 0-1) saw their nine-game winning streak end.

Louisville's foul trouble allowed the Golden Bears to climb back from deficits of more than 20 points a couple of times, but Cal was never able to get the Cardinals' lead under double figures in the second half. A dead-ball technical foul on Vangelis Zougris allowed the Golden Bears to score seven points in three seconds and cap a 14-0 run on a Bell 3-pointer with 6:44 remaining.

That made it 73-62, but the Cardinals responded with a 17-2 run that erased any hopes of a Cal comeback. Conwell scored 10 straight himself to make it 90-64 with 1:09 left.

The last time Louisville won its ACC opener came on Dec. 4, 2021, when the Cardinals won 73-68 at North Carolina State.

Matthew Stafford may have thrown MVP away in 3-pick loss

Matthew Stafford's march toward his first NFL Most Valuable Player award went from one of the league's feel-good stories of 2025 to a significant longshot over four shocking quarters in Atlanta on Monday night.

With only two regular-season games remaining -- both against teams out of playoff contention with coaches on the hot seat -- Stafford entered Week 17 as the consensus MVP favorite ahead of New England counterpart Drake Maye. That included at BetMGM, where Stafford was the -210 favorite ahead of Maye at +165.

The Falcons' defense entered Monday night with only 12 interceptions through the team's 6-9 start. But Atlanta picked Stafford off three times en route to a stunning 27-24 upset on national television.

Compounding matters was the prime-time meltdown came a day after Maye completed 90.5% of his passes while throwing five touchdowns in a clinical destruction of the New York Jets. Despite being pulled in the third quarter, Maye became the fourth Patriots quarterback to pass for at least five touchdowns in a game, joining Tom Brady, Steve Grogan and Babe Parilli.

Combined with Buffalo's loss to Philadelphia, New England clinched the AFC East title.

The series of events flipped Maye to the prohibitive -700 favorite at BetMGM, while Stafford's odds sunk to +425.

DraftKings still has the race somewhat closer with Maye the -330 favorite ahead of Stafford at +250.

Stafford's first three-pick game of the season came at a very inopportune time for both his MVP chances and for the Rams. Sitting in prime position to claim the No. 1 seed in the NFC just two weeks ago, Los Angeles is now locked into a wild-card spot following consecutive losses.

That Maye is at the helm of a division champion while Stafford's Rams have limped to the finish line might prove to be the differentiating factor in a close statistical comparison.

Stafford has thrown for 4,448 yards and 42 touchdowns against eight interceptions while completing 65.2% of his passes.

Maye has thrown for 4,203 yards and 30 touchdowns against eight interceptions while completing 71.7% of his passes.

Stafford's MVP chances could be further hindered depending on what approach coach Sean McVay decides to take in Week 18. The Rams can do no better than the No. 5 seed. If San Francisco beats Seattle on Saturday night, Los Angeles will be locked into the No. 6 seed and will have little to play for on Sunday against the 3-13 Arizona Cardinals.

Meanwhile, the Patriots still have a shot at the No. 1 seed and home-field advantage through the AFC playoffs on the line at home against Miami. New England enters Week 18 with identical 13-3 records with Denver. The Broncos play host to the Los Angeles Chargers, who plan to rest starting quarterback Justin Herbert in favor of backup Trey Lance.

For his part, Stafford said he plans to play against the Cardinals.

"I love playing the game," he said. "So, yeah, I'll be ready to go."

Louisiana Tech scores 17 in 4th quarter, beats Coastal Carolina 23-14 to win Independence Bowl

SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) — Trey Kukuk followed his fourth-quarter touchdown pass with a big run to set up Andrew Burnette's go-ahead plunge in a 17-point fourth quarter, and Louisiana Tech rallied to beat Coastal Carolina 23-14 on Tuesday to win the Independence Bowl.

Louisiana Tech (8-5) trailed 14-6 heading to the fourth quarter before Kukuk and Marlion Jackson teamed up for a 52-yard score on a first-down pass. The two-point pass failed and Lousiana Tech trailed 14-12 with 11:45 remaining.

Louisiana Tech forced a punt that Dedrick Latulas returned 25 yards to the Chanticleers' 49-yard line before an unnecessary roughness penalty was tacked on. Kukuk raced 29 yards to the 5 on first down and Burnette ran it in from a yard out two plays later. Kukuk passed to Burnette for two points for a 20-14 lead with 8:09 remaining.

Tad Hudson threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Dominic Knicely in the first quarter and a 16-yarder to Robby Washington in the second to put the Chanticleers up 14-3 at halftime.

Coastal Carolina outgained Louisiana Tech 248-104 in a first half that saw the two teams flagged for 17 penalties — 10 by the Chanticleers. It was the most penalties in any first half of a FBS game this season.

Freshman Kaegan Kent kicked his first two collegiate field goals and teammate John Hoyet Chance added a 51-yarder for the Bulldogs.

Kukuk completed 9 of 19 passes for 114 yards with an interception, and rushed 19 times for 104 yards.

Hudson had a career-high 311 yards on 25-for-49 passing with two interceptions. Bryson Graves had seven receptions for 110 yards.

Louisiana Tech improves 9-5-1 in 15 bowl games. Coastal Carolina falls to 2-4 in six appearances, all since 2020.

Arsenal will end the year top of the Premier League after 4-1 statement win over Villa

Arsenal ensured it will end the year top of thePremier Leagueafter beating Aston Villa 4-1 at home in a powerful statement win on Tuesday with all goals scored in the second half.

The fourth goal, scored by substitute Gabriel Jesus one minute after coming on, highlighted the depth of Arsenal's bench this season and coach Mikel Arteta jubilantly high-fived his assistants at the final whistle.

Victory moved Arsenalfive points aheadof Manchester City, which plays at Sunderland on New Year's Day, and six points clear of third-place Villa.

"It is a beautiful evening. That was a very tough match, as we knew it would be, because they are a top opponent to play against," Arteta told broadcaster Sky Sports. "The way we started the second half was amazing, we really turned things up and were efficient in everything that we did."

Arsenal has not won the Premier League since 2004 and the pressure is on Arteta to deliver.

"In 2026, we know what we want," Arteta said.

Villa manager Unai Emery later defended his decision not to shake Arteta's hand at the end of the game by saying it was "cold" at the Emirates.

"Always my routine is go to the opposition coach, shake hands and go inside," the former Arsenal manager told Sky Sports. "If he is not doing the same rule, I can't wait ... it was cold."

Elsewhere, Chelsea drew 2-2 at home to Bournemouth; Newcastle won 3-1 at lowly Burnley; and Manchester United was held 1-1 at home to rock-bottom Wolverhampton.

Struggling West Ham drew 2-2 with visiting Brighton, and Everton won 2-0 at Nottingham Forest.

Sharing the goals

No Arsenal player is near the top of the scorers' charts this season, yet sharing the goals around might just be the team's strength.

Defender Gabriel Magalhães headed home early in the second half following a corner for set-piece specialist Arsenal, and midfielder Martín Zubimendi netted in the 52nd minute.

Winger Leandro Trossard curled in a fine third from the edge of the penalty area in the 69th and was involved in the fourth goal, curled into the same corner from almost the same spot in the 78th minute by Jesus after Arsenal had launched a superb counterattack from deep.

The win was even more impressive considering Arsenal was missing key midfielder Declan Rice with a knee injury and Villa was playing on the back of11 straight victoriesin all competitions.

Gabriel nodded in from close range and was deemed not to have impeded Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez with his elbow.

Zubimendi finished confidently after captain Martin Ødegaard expertly won the ball in midfield and advanced before threading a perfect ball behind Villa's defense.

Ollie Watkins grabbed an injury-time consolation for Villa.

Poor defending costs Chelsea

Bournemouth's David Brooks netted early from close range after Chelsea failed to deal with a throw-in from the right.

Cole Palmer equalized in the 15th with a penalty awarded after a video review ruled that Antoine Semenyo's knee had gone into the back of forward Estevão's leg.

Midfielder Enzo Fernández gave Chelsea the lead midway through the first half, but Chelsea gifted Bournemouth an equalizer when a defender headed on a throw-in from the left and Justin Kluivert scored at the back post for 2-2.

Chelsea is fifth and level on 30 points with United in sixth.

United held by Wolves

Manchester United led through Joshua Zirkzee's deflected strike in the 27th but Ladislav Krejčí equalized close to halftime for Wolves with a powerful downward header.

It was Wolves manager Rob Edwards' first pointsince taking charge in November.

Patrick Dorgu's injury-time goal for United was ruled out for offside by VAR.

Boos at the final whistle by United fans contrasted with Wolves supporters' chants of "We've won a point."

Wissa scores for Newcastle

Yoane Wissa grabbed his first league goal since joiningfrom Brentfordas Newcastle moved into 10th spot.

Newcastle was 2-0 up inside seven minutes with Joelinton being set up from the left wing by Anthony Gordon and Wissa bundling in from close range following a goalmouth scramble.

Josh Laurent pulled a goal back for Burnley midway through the first half. Newcastle survived nervy moments before Bruno Guimarães sealed the win with an expert lob in stoppage time.

Next-to-last Burnley is two points behind West Ham in 18th.

Garner and Paquetá shine

Everton netted in the 19th when James Garner drilled in a low finish after being set up down the right by Dwight McNeil.

Garner then turned neatly in midfield before feeding Thierno Barry with a defense-splitting pass to make it 2-0 against Forest in the 79th.

West Ham took an early lead against Brighton when striker Jarrod Bowen latched onto Lucas Paquetá's exquisite through ball from halfway and struck a low shot into the bottom corner.

Veteran forward Danny Welbeck equalized for Brighton from the penalty spot for his eighth goal of the season, and then hit the crossbar with a Panenka-style chipped penalty later in the first half.

Paquetá converted his spot kick with a staggered run-up in first-half injury time, but Joël Veltman equalized for Brighton in the 61st following a corner.

Defending champion Liverpool hosts Leeds on Thursday.
