Avdija scores 33 in latest outburst as Trail Blazers blow out Jazz, 137-117

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Deni Avdija had 33 points, nine assists and eight rebounds in three quarters, falling just short of his second consecutive triple-double, and the Portland Trail Blazers routed the Utah Jazz 137-117 on Monday night.

Lauri Markkanen scored 22 points for the Jazz (12-23), and Jusuf Nurkic had 21 points and 12 boards after missing two games with a sprained toe on his left foot. Utah has dropped four in a row and eight of 10.

Portland shot 53% from the floor, including 19 for 48 (40%) from 3-point distance, and missed only one of its 21 free throws. Sharpe hit five 3s and Avdija drained four. Sharpe also had seven assists and five rebounds.

Kawhi Leonard leads Clippers past Warriors 103-102 in wild game with Kerr ejected, Curry fouled out

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Kawhi Leonard had 24 points and 12 rebounds, rookie Kobe Sanders added 20 points, and the Los Angeles Clippers edged the Golden State Warriors 103-102 on Monday night in a wild game that included Warriors coach Steve Kerr getting ejected and Steph Curry fouling out for the first time since 2021.

Kerr was ejected with 7:57 remaining in the game after becoming irate when the Clippers' John Collins wasn't called for goaltending. A shouting Kerr pursued the referees along the sideline and had to be restrained by his assistants before getting tossed.

Curry scored 27 points but was just 4 for 15 from 3-point range and 9 for 23 overall before fouling out with 42 seconds remaining in the game. He fouled out for the first time since Dec. 17, 2021, at Boston.

James Harden was a late scratch for the Clippers because of right shoulder soreness. But they got double-figure scoring from all five starters, including Sanders, whose points were a career high. Collins added 18 points and Kris Dunn had 16. Ivica Zubac had 11 rebounds.

Jimmy Butler added 24 points for the Warriors, who lost to the Clippers for the eighth straight time on the road.

Curry fouled Dunn with 42 seconds left and the Warriors trailing 101-100 after Curry's back-to-back 3-pointers. Dunn made both free throws before Draymond Green scored in the lane to pull the Warriors within one.

Leonard missed a jumper and the Warriors grabbed the defensive rebound. Butler missed a 16-footer before time expired.

Neither team shot well from 3. The Clippers were 10 for 29, while the Warriors were 10 for 41.

The Warriors closed within four early in the fourth before the Clippers outscored them 16-7 to lead 94-81. Leonard scored six and Collins had five.

Golden State ran off nine straight, including seven by Butler, to trail 94-90.

Golden State had won six of eight coming into what was a playoff-like atmosphere that included rapper Snoop Dogg doing commentary for the game streamed on Peacock. It was a matchup of the NBA's two oldest teams. The average age of the Clippers' roster is 30.0 to 29.6 for the Warriors.

Green dove for a loose ball and crashed into his team's bench late in the first half. The team said he sustained a rib contusion, but he remained in the game. Green had 12 assists while going 0 of 6 from 3-point range.

Warriors: Host the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday in the opener of an eight-game homestand.

Clippers: Visit the New York Knicks on Wednesday to open a three-game Eastern trip.

Red Wings pounce on Senators early, hold on for 5-3 win

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) — James van Riemsdyk had a goal and two assists to lead the Detroit Red Wings to a 5-3 win over the Ottawa Senators on Monday night to snap a two-game losing skid.

Coming off back-to-back losses to the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Red Wings were determined to take defeat their divisional rivals in the first of four meetings between the two clubs.

Andrew Copp, Dylan Larkin, Lucas Raymond and Michael Rasmussen also scored, while John Gibson stopped 35 shots.

Brady Tkachuk, Claude Giroux and Dylan Cozens scored for the Senators. With a pair of assists, Tim Stutzle extended his point streak to 13 games (eight goals, 13 assists).

Trailing 4-2, Tkachuk brought the Senators within one at 6:55 of the third. Detroit took back-to-back penalties but Ottawa failed to capitalize and gave up a short-handed goal on a Giroux giveaway that led to a 2-on-1 with Rasmussen beating Hunter Shepard, who gave up two goals on 12 shots.

Ottawa had a goal called back for goaltender interference and despite pulling Shepard with more than three minutes remaining could not complete the comeback.

Shepard started the second period — replacing Leevi Merilainen who gave up three goals on eight shots — marking his first appearance with the Senators.

Larkin scored his 264th career goal and tied Nicklas Lidstrom for 11th place on the Red Wings' all-time list.

Red Wings: Host the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday.

Senators: Visit the Utah Mammoth on Wednesday.

Trae Young, Hawks working toward trade, with Wizards reportedly a potential destination for the guard

The Washington Wizards have surfaced as a potential trade destination for Atlanta Hawks point guard Trae Young, according to veteran NBA reporter Marc Stein. The deal would reportedly be centered around guard C.J. McCollum's expiring contract.

Atlanta begancollaborative talks with Young's agents, Drew Morrison, Aaron Mintz and Austin Brownof CAA, last week, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. The two sides have appeared headed for a split since the Hawks declined to offer Young a max extension this past offseason.

Young has a $49 million player option for next season, and there's reportedly some belief that the Hawks might have to offer draft compensation to entice a team to absorb his contract.

It has been a difficult start to the 2025-26 season for Young, who has played in only 10 games due to a knee injury. He hasn't played since a Dec. 27 loss to the New York Knicks in which he totaled 9 points, 10 assists and 6 turnovers. He missed the entire month of November, and the Hawks went 10-5 without their four-time All-Star.

The past couple of years have been tough for Young and the Hawks, as they've missed out on the playoffs the past two seasons. Atlanta qualified for the play-in tournament each of those years but failed to advance. There has been plenty of speculation about the Hawks and Young splitting, andwith the Feb. 5 trade deadline quickly approaching, a deal could be imminent.

What's more, many of Young's offensive stats are down significantly in the 10 games he has played this season. Last season, Young averaged 24.2 points and 11.6 assists (NBA leader) and shot 34% from 3-point range in 76 games. This year, he's down to 19.3 points and 8.9 assists per game and is shooting 30.5% from beyond the arc. Whether it's his health, the team orthe desire to play elsewhere, something likely needs to change soon.

Since entering the NBA in 2018, Young has been one of the more prolific point guards in terms of scoring and passing. In each of the past three seasons, he has averaged a double-double in points and assists. The biggest criticisms of Young are his smaller stature and limited defensive ability.

Transfer portal: Texas RB Quintrevion Wisner heading to Florida State

Former Texas running back Quintrevion Wisner will get a fresh start in Tallahassee, according to On3's Hayes Fawcett. He's headed to Florida State after spending three years in Austin.

After rushing for career-high 1,064 yards and five touchdowns in his sophomore year, Wisner rushed for 597 yards and three touchdowns last season.

Wisner led the team in rushing yards in both seasons. He'll have one season of eligibility remaining.

With quarterback Thomas Castellanos declaring for the draft and running back Gavin Sawchuk hitting the portal, the Seminoles will be without last year's two leading rushers. Wisner has a chance to fill that gap.

Shedeur Sanders on whether he showed enough to be Browns starter next season: 'It's not in my hands'

It took many weeks before Shedeur Sanders got his first start with the Cleveland Browns. The much-hyped fifth-round pick made an uneven seven starts down the stretch, though ended the year on a high note witha win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

Following that seven-start audition, Sanders was asked Monday whether he believes he showed enough to warrant being the team's starter next season. While Sanders made it clear he has confidence in his ability, he deferred to the team's decision makers to make that call, saying, "It's not in my hands and I can't speak on how other people feel."

#BrownsQB Shedeur Sanders on whether he believes he showed enough to GM Andrew Berry to win the starting job."I think I did what I was able to do. I grew from a lot of things, and I have experience now. I'm always the same confidence-wise. It's not in my hands, and I can't…pic.twitter.com/YylPbY47uO

Sanders' future with the franchise is an even bigger question followingthe firing of head coach Kevin Stefanskion Monday. Stefanski was initially hesitant to insert Sanders into the starting lineup, but an injury to rookie Dillon Gabriel forced the coach's hand. But once Sanders got the role, he kept it, starting the team's final seven games.

[Get more Browns news: Cleveland team feed]

With Stefanski out now, it will be up to general manager Andrew Berry and the team's next head coach to determine whether Sanders deserves to be the team's starter next season — or if he should be given the chance to compete for the job.

Sanders, 23, experienced a few highs as the Browns' starter. He seemed to have a knack for deep touchdowns, and turned in a three-touchdown performance against the Tennessee Titans in Week 14.

Other than that, though,he mostly struggled. Sanders finished the year with a 56.6 completion percentage. He tossed seven touchdowns against 10 interceptions.

While that performance should be expected from a fifth-round rookie, Sanders was not the typical fifth-rounder. After a standout college career at Colorado, Sanders was projected by many to be an early-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, with some analysts believing he would go in the first round.

But Sanders experienced one ofthe most shocking draft fallsin recent memory, plummeting all the way to the fifth round before the Browns eventually selected him with the 144th overall pick. Given those high draft projections — and Sanders being the son of Hall of Famer Deion Sanders — there was far more excitement and expectation than normal surrounding the pick.

Whether Sanders lived up to those expectations in his seven-game stint as the starter will be up to Berry and the Browns' next head coach. Berry was non-committal when asked about the situation Monday, saying he wasn't sure ifthe team's 2026 starter was currently on the Browns.

The team could have an opportunity to add an elite talent at the position in the 2026 NFL Draft, as theBrowns hold the No. 6 overall pick. Depending on who is still available, the Browns might have a hard time passing on quarterback with that pick.

That feels like the most likely outcome. Despite the hype, Sanders lasted until the fifth round of the NFL Draft and followed that up with a rocky rookie season. Even if he's not outright replaced in the offseason, Sanders is unlikely to be guaranteed anything from the Browns heading into 2026.
