Ja'Kobi Gillespie nets career-best 34 as No. 21 Tennessee corrals Texas

Ja'Kobi Gillespie poured in 22 of his career-high 34 points in the first half, and No. 21 Tennessee recorded its first Southeastern Conference win by taming Texas 85-71 on Tuesday night in Knoxville, Tenn.

Gillespie was exceptional on both ends of the court, hitting 12 of 18 from the floor, 5 of 8 from long range and all five free throws. The senior added five assists, four rebounds, and three steals.

J.P. Estrella added 11 points and six rebounds off the bench for the Volunteers (11-4, 1-1). DeWayne Brown II and Jaylen Carey had 10 points and four rebounds apiece.

Tennessee shot 52.7% from the floor and 40% from beyond the arc. The Volunteers also held a 44-18 edge in paint points.

Tramon Mark had 20 points and five rebounds for the Longhorns (9-6, 0-2). Camden Heide totaled 16 points and four rebounds. Simeon Wilcher pitched in with 10 points.

Tennessee brought defensive intensity from the opening tip, getting three steals and a blocked shot to lead 11-5 at 15:39 on Gillespie's layup and free throw to complete a three-point play. However, Wilcher drained a 3-pointer at 14:10 for the visitors' first lead, 12-11.

After that back-and-forth stretch between the schools, the Volunteers found their game in the middle part of the half.

They took off on a 19-8 run over an 8:04 stretch for a 30-20 lead that ended with Brown making a layup off an assist from Nate Ament.

Then, Tennessee rode the hot hand of Gillespie to outscore Texas, 18-13, and hold a 48-33 advantage after Amari Evans' tip-in at the buzzer.

The point guard was the driving force, netting 22 points including a pair of deep shots in the final two minutes as the Volunteers made 17 of 27 shots (63%) and held the Longhorns, who were led by Mark's nine points, to 39.3% shooting (11 of 28).

In the second half, Felix Okpara's successful tip at 18:31 lifted the lead to 54-33, but Texas sliced it to 60-45 on Chendall Weaver's layup at 12:29. Heide and Mark hit treys to make it a game against at 61-51 with 10:34 left.

The Volunteers responded with the next seven points and maintained the double-digit lead the rest of the way to improve to 3-0 over two seasons of the Longhorns playing in the conference.

Tennessee took advantage of 16 Texas turnovers to score 27 points.

Who should Ravens hire to replace John Harbaugh? With Lamar Jackson, Ravens have a luxury their counterparts don't

When theCleveland BrownsandLas Vegas Raidersinterview head coaches in the coming weeks, they know the most important question they must answer: How will we identify and develop a young quarterback?

When theNew York GiantsandTennessee Titansinterview head coaches, they, too, know the crux: First-round quarterbacksJaxson DartandCam Wardneed molding and development. The quarterback hopeful for each club is in the house. But how will he grow?

Shakeup at the top of theAtlanta FalconsandArizona Cardinalswill similarly require answers on a position with major question marks in 2026 and beyond.

These answers need not all come via offensive head coaches during a hiring cycle riper with defensive candidates than offensive. And in many successful franchises, including the reigning Super Bowl champions, the head coach's primary responsibility is not to call offensive plays.

But when teams front young quarterbacks or face questions at quarterback, the pressure to find the offensive panacea sharpens. Coaching searches often skew accordingly.

So theBaltimore Ravenshold a clear advantage.

Because asthey announced Tuesday night that 18-year head coach John Harbaugh was "relieved of his duties,"the Ravens are the lone team currently looking for a head coach that is not simultaneously searching to clarify their answer at quarterback.

Recruiting coaches while two-time MVPLamar Jacksonis under contract is a luxury.

Sure, plenty will argue that just as theRavens become the most attractive of seven NFL openingsand counting, Harbaugh immediately became the most attractive candidate when he hit the market. That doesn't mean the decision should be baffling. With a Super Bowl-winning coach and an MVP-winning quarterback, it should not be surprising if each believes he has the answers to future success. And if those answers don't align, a time comes for a change.

But as the Ravens look for a coach who will end their 13-year Super Bowl drought, they won't need as strong an emphasis on developing a quarterback.

[Get more Ravens news: Baltimore team feed]

That could allow them, should they want, to select the best overall candidate first. Their ceiling will immediately be high.

"We have so much talent on this team, and it's just disappointing that we're not able to be the team that's able to execute and win games when we need to win games," fullbackPatrick Ricardsaid this week. "As long as we have Lamar Jackson, I feel like this team can win a Super Bowl."

Among 7 openings, Ravens' Jackson offers best QB by far

A minority of coaches and executives across the league will argue that a coach in the Shanahan and McVay systems may prefer a more in-structure passer to build their offense around.

But more often, as the surprise of Harbaugh's dismissal hit Tuesday, league voices understood the new pecking order of openings.

"The jobs this cycle all lack QBs like normal so he's definitely the top QB and offense available for any coach," one NFC executive told Yahoo Sports.

An AFC assistant added of Jackson: "Any scheme fits him."

Jackson has shown that in eight seasons since the Ravens selected him with the 32nd pick of the 2018 NFL Draft. He's earned four Pro Bowl berths, three All-Pro honors and two MVP awards while winning 76 of 107 regular-season starts.

In aggregate, Jackson has completed 64.8% of his passes for 22,608 yards and 187 passing touchdowns to 56 interceptions. His 102.2 career passer rating and 8.25 air yards per attempt currently hold the all-time career records, per Pro Football Reference.

And those numbers don't even include Jackson's additional 6,522 yards and 35 touchdowns rushing.

His health has been inconsistent at times, Jackson most recently missing four games and about half of another this season with hamstring and back injuries. But while healthy, he thrived. Consider his Week 18 return from a back injury in Pittsburgh with the AFC North title on the line. While the Ravens lost on a walk-off missed field-goal attempt Sunday night, Jackson completed 11 of 18 passes for 238 yards and three touchdowns.

He activated another level in the fourth quarter, with 50- and 64-yard go-ahead touchdown passes to receiver Zay Flowers. The first came despite two defenders seeming to have Jackson wrapped up. Jackson was unfazed.

"Shoot — I cut a nose guard loose, and he somehow slipped out of it and threw the ball [50] yards for a touchdown," centerTyler Linderbaumsaid. "That's the kind of ability he has. So, he's fun to play for. [He's an] ultra competitor, and any time that ball is snapped to him, and it's in his hands, you know something electrifying can happen."

"The most electrifying player there is in this game."

After Harbaugh's final Ravens game, Jackson didn't endorse him

As reports of tension between Jackson and Harbaugh built this season, Jackson was asked last Thursday if he had a good relationship with Harbaugh.

"Yes, I believe so," he said. "I don't know where the noise came from. I don't know where the noise came from."

After the Ravens' 26-24 loss Sunday, Jackson was asked about Harbaugh again.

Did he want to see Harbaugh as his head coach next season?

"You're asking me about next year," Jackson said. "I'm so caught up in what just happened tonight. I can't focus on that right now, I just told you. Like he asked me, 'Are you stunned?'

"I'm stunned right now, and I'm still trying to process what's going on. I know we lost, but what the ... you know?"

Sure, the emotions of the season's sudden ending were fresh as Jackson's Herculean fourth quarter wasn't enough to advance to a sixth playoff berth in eight years. But Jackson was not the first player to receive a question about his coach's future at season's end. He would not have been the first to endorse a leader after a loss, especially one 18 years into his tenure with the organization with a Lombardi Trophy to his name and an AFC championship game berth in partnership with Jackson.

Jackson did not choose that.

By Tuesday night, Harbaugh was out. The Ravens thanked Harbaugh for a "tremendous" 18 years and the Super Bowl title.

Harbaugh issued his own statement, curiously including a smiley-face emoji as he said goodbye with "disappointment certainly, but more with GRATITUDE & APPRECIATION."

— Jori Epstein (@JoriEpstein)January 6, 2026

The Ravens' coaching search, as team owner Steve Bisciotti said in a statement, begins. Their ability to move quickly on top defensive candidates including theLos Angeles Chargers' Jesse Minter,Los Angeles Rams' Chris Shula andHouston Texans' Matt Burke could prove to be an asset.

"That's a dream backfield to have Lamar andDerrick [Henry]and to play with those guys," Ricard said. "I feel like, as long as they're here, this team has a shot — no matter who else is playing."

AUBURN, ALABAMA - JANUARY 6: KeShawn Murphy #3 of Auburn Tigers reacts after officials ruled that his last-second shot did not beat the shot clock to win the game against the Texas A&M Aggies at Neville Arena on January 6, 2026 in Auburn, Alabama. (Photo by Stew Milne/Getty Images)

KeShawn Murphy thought he had hit a ridiculous deep buzzer-beater to lift Auburn past Texas A&M on Tuesday night.

He was justbarelytoo late.

Murphy, with Auburn down by two points, caught an inbounds pass with just 0.6 seconds left on the clock, turned and fired. His shot was perfect, and sparked a massive celebration at Neville Arena. The shot looked like it was one of the first truly great buzzer-beaters of the college basketball season, several months before March even hit.

But unfortunately for Murphy and the Tigers, a review from the officials determined that the release was just a little too late. Murphy didn't get the shot off in time, and the points were called off. That gave the Aggies the 90-88 road win, and left them celebrating in front of a stunned arena instead.

— SEC Network (@SECNetwork)January 7, 2026

"I don't have a clear understanding still," Auburn coach Steven Pearl said, viaWSFA12's Rosie Langello-Hodgens. "I still gotta gather more information and get an understanding as to what their determination was ... Just from the angles that I saw, it looked like the ball was out of his hands on the red light, on the scoreboard that we were looking at. But I would imagine that they had a different angle they were looking at to determine the ball wasn't out of his hands."

Pearl had a conversation with the SEC after the game, and he was seen meeting with athletic director John Cohen and officials on the court well after speaking with reporters.

Texas A&M rallied from a 16-point hole to grab the win over the Tigers, which got them to 12-3 on the season and kept them a perfect 2-0 in SEC play. Pop Isaacs led the way with 21 points off the bench after he shot 7-of-12 from the field, and Jacari Lane added 17 points and seven rebounds. The Aggies have now won five straight entering Saturday's game with Oklahoma.

Keyshawn Hall led Auburn with 32 points and 12 rebounds in the loss, and Kevin Overton finished with 16 points. Murphy had eight points and eight rebounds. The Tigers have now lost four of their last six, and fell to 9-6 on the season — which is the first under Pearl, whotook over for his father, longtime coach Bruce Pearl, this past offseason. They'll head into Saturday's game with No. 15 Arkansas without an SEC win looking to avoid what would be the program's first three-game losing skid since 2023.

Playoff-bound Bills sign kicker Matthew Wright to practice squad with Matt Prater's status uncertain

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Theplayoff-bound Buffalo Billssigned kicker Matthew Wright to their practice squad on Tuesday in a precautionary move in the event Matt Prater is sidelined after aggravating a quadricep injury to his right kicking leg last weekend.

The 29-year-old Wright has six seasons of NFL experience and appeared in four games with three teams already this season, including two most recently with the Houston Texans in November. The Bills turned to Wright after he joined kickers Younghoe Koo and Matt Gay in working out for the team earlier in the day.

Wright has played at least one game with eight teams since making his NFL debut by appearing in three outings with Pittsburgh in 2020. His most extensive experience came with Jacksonville in 2021, when he hit 21 of 24 field goals and 13 of 15 extra points attempts in 14 games.

This season, he's hit all five field-goal attempts — including three beyond 40 yards — and gone 4 of 4 on extra points.

Overall, he's 60 of 68 on field-goal attempts, including 7 of 11 from 50 yards and beyond, and missed just two of 47 extra-point tries.

Wright has no postseason experience, though his familiarity with kicking in Jacksonville comes in handy with sixth-seeded Buffalo (12-5) traveling to play the AFC South champion Jaguars (13-4) ina wild-card playoffgame on Sunday.

Prater's status is uncertain, with coach Sean McDermott on Monday saying the team would bring in a potential replacement this week. Prater was hurt in the first half of a season-ending 35-8 win over the New York Jets on Sunday in his return after missing two games.

Buffalo avoided re-signing Michael Badgley, who missed an extra-point attempt and had another blocked in the two games filling in for Prater. The Bills signed the 41-year-old Prater in the days before their season opener after Tyler Bass was sidelined by hip and groin issues. Bass has since had season-ending surgery.

Buffalo freed up a practice squad spot by cutting offensive lineman Richard Gouraige. The Bills also signed former Austin Peay and Temple kicker Maddux Trujillo to a reserve-future contract.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — NASCAR Commissioner Steve Phelps on Tuesday announced his resignation after more than 20 years with the top racing series in the United States and a nasty federal trial in which inflammatory texts he sent during contentious revenue-sharing negotiations were revealed.

Phelps will leave the company at the end of the month, ahead of the start of the season. He was named NASCAR's first commissioner last season after a courting process for the same role by the PGA golf tour. The opportunity with the PGA was revealed during December testimony of the antitrust trial brought by two race teams against NASCAR.

But the top executive at NASCAR was deeply bruised during the trial — and the discovery process leading into it — when communications he exchanged with top leadership was exposed. In one exchange, Phelps called Hall of Fame team owner Richard Childress "a stupid redneck" who "needs to be taken out back and flogged."

That led Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris, an ardent supporter of both NASCAR and Richard Childress Racing, to write a letter demanding Phelps' removal as commissioner.

NASCAR settled the lawsuit with 23XI Racing, owned by Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin, and Front Row Motorsports, owned by Bob Jenkins, the day after Morris' letter.

"As a lifelong race fan, it gives me immense pride to have served as NASCAR's first Commissioner and to lead our great sport through so many incredible challenges, opportunities and firsts over my 20 years," Phelps said in a statement. "Our sport is built on the passion of our fans, the dedication of our teams and partners, and the commitment of our wonderful employees.

"It has been an honor to help synthesize the enthusiasm of long-standing NASCAR stakeholders with that of new entrants to our ecosystem, such as media partners, auto manufacturers, track operators, and incredible racing talent."

He added he will seek "new pursuits in sports and other industries" and thanked colleagues, friends and fans that "played such an important and motivational role in my career."

Bengals CB Cam Taylor-Britt to spend 5 days in jail after driving incident

Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt will be spending the next five days in jail.

Taylor-Britt was sentenced to five days of jail time over a driving incident in September, an Ohio judge ruled on Tuesday, according toESPN's Ben Baby. Taylor-Britt was charged with reckless driving, which is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 30 days in jail, a $250 fine or both, and driving without a license. The judge in the case declined to grant Taylor-Britt community service, and insisted that his jail time be served immediately.

"That's a gift," Hamilton County judge Bernie Bouchard told Taylor-Britt, via ESPN. "Five days instead of 30. He's got to do them now. It'll be over soon enough."

[Get more Bengals news: Cincinnati team feed]

The issue stemmed from a driving incident when Taylor-Britt allegedly did a burnout on the wrong side of the road near Paycor Stadium. Court records indicated, according to ESPN, that it took place on Sept. 14, shortly after the team's 31-27 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 2 of the season. But county attorneys testified that the incident actually occurred in June. Further specifics are not yet known.

Taylor-Britt's attorneys said that he hasn't driven since October, and that he's selling the vehicle involved in the incident. He was at a Kentucky transportation office on Tuesday to receive his new license, too.

"I just want to apologize, first and foremost for my actions that I've put everybody else through," Taylor-Britt said. "Not intentional in [any] way."

The hearing on Tuesday actually started without Taylor-Britt, who was available on standby while the plea deal was being finalized. The judge then instructed Taylor-Britt to show up before noon under the likelihood of serving jail time.

Taylor-Britt ended the season on injured reserve after he went down in the team's loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Nov. 16. The 26-year-old underwent Lisfranc surgery on his left foot, and is still recovering.

Taylor-Britt had 21 total tackles in eight games this season, his fourth in the league after the Bengals selected him with the No. 60 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft out of Nebraska. He is set to become a free agent this summer after his initial rookie deal expires.

The Bengals went just 6-11 this season and missed the playoffs for a third straight campaign.

"I'm not opposed to it," Taylor-Britt said Monday about possibly playing elsewhere next season. "At the end of the day, I don't think anybody would be mad at a new change of scenery."

Reggie Miller, rapper Snoop Dogg and Terry Gannon call the game between the LA Clippers and the Golden State Warriors.

In a warm-up for his role in the upcoming Winter Olympics, Snoop Dogg was given a microphone during the second half of the NBA game between the Golden State Warriors and the Clippers on Monday night at the Intuit Dome.

Can't wait for those Olympics! Snoop hilariously sizzled when Warriors coach Steve Kerr stormed the court in the fourth quarter of the Clippers' 103-102 victory.

"The Arizona Wildcat done came out of him. Look at him!"Snoop said, alluding to Kerr's college team. "Aw, Rawwwr, rawwwr, rawwwr!"

Kerr was hit with two technical fouls in less than a minute. He nearly got one with 8:44 to play when Warriors guard Stephen Curry made a shot that appeared to be a continuation after a foul, but the officials nullified the basket.

Less than a minute later, Kerr found a new level of vehemence after the Clippers' John Collins wasn't called for goaltending on a shot by Gary Payton II. Thefour-time NBA championship coachflew into a rage, aggressively gesturing at officials and screaming.

ok.. it was worth having Snoop on the broadcast just to hear him call this Steve Kerr crash out 🤣🤣🤣pic.twitter.com/FJzXxqnal9

— outbreezy (@outbreezyWC)January 6, 2026

Kerr picked up the two technicals — his first in nearly four seasons — and was held back by Payton and assistant coaches before exiting to the locker room.

Snoop Dogg, who had joined regular Peacock/NBC announcers Reggie Miller and Terry Gannon for the second half, rose to the occasion, his commentary keeping pace with Kerr's antics.

"Oh, Steve gonna get thrown out! Get him out of there. Get him out of there! Back him up!" Snoop barked.

All Miller and Gannon could do was laugh as Snoop continued, referencing the location of the Intuit Dome and Kerr's Southern California ties: "Steve back in Inglewood right now. Inglewooood!!! Get him, Steve! You in Inglewood, Steve!"
