Baseball Hall of Fame voting update: Carlos Beltrán and Andruw Jones on track for induction — will anyone else join them?

In two weeks, the National Baseball Hall of Fame will announce its Class of 2026. We already know one member of the class, and we have a pretty good idea about two others. After that, it's hazy at best.

The past couple of years have had some fairly obvious first-ballot inductees in Ichiro Suzuki (2025) and Adrian Beltré (2024). There are no such players this year. Instead, any inductees will be benefiting from the slow drift of BBWAA votes, through which a player such as Billy Wagner can go from 10.5% voting in his first ballot in 2016 to a triumphant 82.5% in his final year of eligibility last year.

That's wherethe Hall of Fame Ballot Trackercomes in. The helpful spreadsheet is run by the team of Ryan Thibodaux, Anthony Calamis and Adam Dore, who track every publicly available BBWAA ballot (and some privately indulged ones). As of Wednesday, 140 ballots had been tracked out of an estimated total of 424, enough that we can get a pretty solid idea of which way the wind is blowing.

As a reminder, players need to receive at least 75% of the BBWAA vote to be inducted into the Hall. They get 10 years on the ballot to get there but automatically fall off if they ever receive less than 5% of the vote. After that, they can still get in through the Hall's Era Committees if they don't make it via BBWAA.

Here's how all 27 players on the ballot are doing so far, with numbers as of Wednesday.

Already in

Kent was the lone player to emerge from the Contemporary Era Committee's vote in December, on a ballot that also included Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Carlos Delgado. Kent fell off the BBWAA ballot in 2023, receiving 46.5% of the vote in his final year, but he immediately got in through the committee.

On track for this year

Carlos Beltrán (88.4% of vote, 4th year of eligibility)Andruw Jones (83.0%, 9th)

Both Beltrán and Jones are accomplished outfielders who are ahead of the pace needed to reach induction, but that doesn't mean this is over. BBWAA voters who never reveal their ballots tend to be harsher judges than the public ones, which is how Beltrán went from 73.6% of known ballots to 70.3% in the final vote last year.

Both men also have off-field issues that could come up in voting, notably Jones' domestic violence arrest in 2012 and Beltrán's central role in the Astros cheating scandal. Those are obviously very different situations, but both are relevant in a world in which the character clause has become a major deciding factor in these votes.

On track for sometime in the future

Chase Utley (66.7%, 3rd)Félix Hernández (58.5%, 2nd)Cole Hamels (32.0%, 1st)

These guys would all need miracles ranging from minor to major to reach Cooperstown this year, but they should still probably expect plaques at some point in their futures. Very few players who get a majority of votes in their first three years on the ballot end up not making it eventually.

Utley and Hernández both had Hall of Fame primes, then fell off a bit due to age and injury, but the voters don't seem too worried about what those two did in their 30s. And for Hamels, 32% is a fine starting number in his first year on the ballot.

Who will join Jeff Kent in the 2026 Baseball Hall of Fame?

Could go either way

Andy Pettitte (55.8%, 8th)Dustin Pedroia (25.2%, 2nd)David Wright (19.7%, 3rd)

Only Hernández has gained more returning votes than Pettitte so far this cycle, and the southpaw is also doing well with first-time voters, at 70%. Those are encouraging signs. But you have to wonder how much resistance against Pettitte has calcified due to his alleged steroid use. With only two years remaining on the ballot, he needs a lot of people to come around quickly.

Pedroia and Wright are both one-team infielders who didn't quite have Hall of Fame longevity but could ultimately get in if future voters look kindly upon them.

Staying alive

Bobby Abreu (38.8%, 7th)Jimmy Rollins (25.9%, 5th)Mark Buehrle (22.4%, 6th)Omar Vizquel (12.9%, 9th)Francisco Rodriguez (12.9%, 4th)Torii Hunter (4.8%, 6th)

It's hard to imagine any of these guys getting the boost they need at this stage of their candidacy, but they will probably make it to the next ballot. Hunter went from 4.8% of public votes last year to 5.1% in the final count, so a similar bump would keep him in the safe zone this time around.

Vizquel remains a notable case given that he appeared to be a lock for induction at one point, after he reached 52.6% in his third year of eligibility in 2020, but domestic abuse and sexual harassment allegations have since made him a non-candidate.

Alex Rodriguez

Alex Rodriguez (47.6%, 5th)

With Bonds and Clemens both out of Hall of Fame consideration until 2031, the most controversial candidate is now Rodriguez, whose multiple steroid scandals didn't prevent him from getting a job at Fox Sports but do appear to be a significant barrier for the Hall of Fame.

His 47.6% number is at least a significant jump from where Rodríguez has been hovering in his first four years of eligibility — from 34.3% in 2022 to 27.1% in 2025 — but his lack of progress with first-time voters (46.7% this year) means the tides are not yet turning the way he needs them to.

It's over

Manny Ramirez (43.5%, 10th)

With no more ballots after this one, the Boston Red Sox great can start crossing his fingers that the Contemporary Era Committee doesn't mind his PED use as much as the BBWAA clearly does.

Hello, goodbye

Ryan Braun (2.7%, 1st)Edwin Encarnacion (1.4%, 1st)Shin-Soo Choo (0.7%, 1st)Hunter Pence (0.7%, 1st)Gio Gonzalez (0%, 1st)Alex Gordon (0%, 1st)Matt Kemp (0%, 1st)Howie Kendrick (0%, 1st)Nick Markakis (0%, 1st)Daniel Murphy (0%, 1st)Rick Porcello (0%, 1st)

It is extremely difficult to make the Hall of Fame. The above players have a combined 1 MVP award, 1 Cy Young Award, 27 All-Star selections, 13 Gold Gloves, 10 Silver Sluggers and 5 World Series rings, but it looks like none of them will get a second look from voters. Braun's admitted PED use obviously looms largest here.

Gotham FC honored with Key to New York City after NWSL triumph

Armas takes over from Vlatko Andonovski, who stepped down as head coach at the end of the 2025 season. Previously serving in a dual role, Andonovski remains with the organization as sporting director.

"We are excited to have Chris in Kansas City, and I look forward to working closely with him as we continue to take the club to new heights," said Andonovski. "Chris brings a wealth of experience that will be invaluable for our organization. His passion for the game is evident, as is his commitment to his players and his winning mindset."

The Current were the best team in the NWSL regular season last year, setting all-time league records for wins (21), points (65) and shutouts (16). But Kansas City was stunned in the first round of the playoffs, losing to No. 8 seed and eventual champion Gotham FC.

Armas is regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders in American history, earning 66 caps with the USMNT from 1998 to 2005.

He is one of only five players in MLS history to have been named to the MLS Best XI five times, and he is a six-time MLS All-Star.

US to face Colombia, Argentina and Canada in 11th SheBelieves Cup

The U.S. women's team will host Canada, Argentina and Colombia in the annual SheBelieves Cup this March.

The round-robin tournament will be played as double-headers in three cities: Nashville, Tennessee; Columbus, Ohio; and Harrison, New Jersey. The U.S. finale at Sports Illustrated Stadium will include a ceremony for New Jersey native Tobin Heath, a two-time Women's World Cup winner who announced her retirement from soccer last year.

The United States is currently ranked No. 2 in the world, while Canada is No. 10, Colombia is No. 20 and Argentina is No. 30.

"These are three teams that will likely be in the World Cup in 2027 and of course we'll likely see Canada in World Cup qualifying at the end of the year, so when focusing on our continued preparations and growth as a team, the SheBelieves Cup is of great value," U.S. head coach Emma Hayes said in a statement announcing the tournament field Wednesday. "Each team brings different strengths and will challenge us to find success in all parts of the field, which is exactly what we need as we continue our process to build toward the big events on the horizon."

Canada will play Colombia followed by the United States against Argentina on March 1 in Nashville at GEODIS Park. On March 4, Argentina plays Colombia and the United States plays Canada at Miracle-Gro Field in Columbus. The tournament wraps up in New Jersey on March 7 with Canada against Argentina and the United States playing Colombia.

The U.S. has won seven of the 11 SheBelieves Cup tournaments. Japan won last year's event.

"This competition is a fantastic opportunity to once again measure ourselves against high-quality opponents who are all likely to be at the 2027 World Cup," Canada coach Casey Stoney said. "The SheBelieves Cup has served as a great test for our group in previous years and we're thrilled to be able to return for another chance to win the competition. Each team brings a different style which will pose a challenge and ultimately prepare us to become the team we need to be."

Brandon Williams hits a late 3-pointer, gives Mavericks 100-98 win over Kings

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Cooper Flagg scored 20 points, Brandon Williams hit the winning 3-pointer with 33.9 seconds to play, and the Dallas Mavericks held on for a 100-98 win over the Sacramento Kings on Tuesday night to snap a seven-game road losing streak.

Anthony Davis had 19 points and 16 rebounds for the Mavericks, who trailed 98-97 when Williams hit his 3-pointer for a 100-98 lead.

The Kings had multiple chances to retake the lead, but Dennis Schroder, Russell Westbrook and DeMar DeRozan all missed 3-point tries in the final seconds.

Sacramento, which lost its sixth game in a row, was led by DeRozan with 21 points. Zach LaVine had 20 and Maxime Reynaud added 14. The Kings' last win was Dec. 27 against Dallas. The Kings at 8-29 have the second-worst record in the Western Conference.

Williams ended up with 18 for Dallas, and Naji Marshall had 15. Daniel Gafford had 13 rebounds for the Mavericks, who have won back-to-back games following a four-game losing streak. They beat the Rockets on Saturday, 110-104.

The Mavericks trailed 58-46 at halftime, but cut the deficit to 78-76 after three. The Mavericks outscored the Kings by 14 points over the final two quarters.

Even though LaVine returned to the lineup after a nine-game absence due to a left ankle sprain, the Kings played without forward Keegan Murray, who suffered a left ankle sprain in Sunday's loss to the Milwaukee Bucks. He will be reevaluated in three to four weeks. Murray missed the start of the season with a thumb injury.

Dallas plays at Utah on Thursday night.

Sacramento is at Golden State on Friday night.

Berkly Catton scores first two NHL goals after enduring 27-game drought

SEATTLE (AP) — It took 28 games for Berkly Catton to score his first career NHL goal.

His second took just over 28 minutes of game time.

Catton, the Kraken's first-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, came away with a pair of goals inSeattle's 7-4 win over the Boston Bruinson Tuesday night, breaking a lengthy scoring drought to open his career.

"Lot of weight off the shoulders for sure," the 19-year-old Catton said. "I've dreamed of that for a long time, so that was awesome."

Catton's first came in a bit of odd fashion on a three-on-two at 2:48 in the second period. He took a pass from Jared McCann and ripped a one-timer from a tough angle that found its way through Jeremy Swayman's pads.

"I didn't even know it went in, to be honest," Catton said. "I thought it hit the post."

When the goal horn sounded, Catton raised his arms with a very obvious sigh of relief, as McCann mobbed him on the side boards.

"It's the best; I said, 'Finally.' " said McCann, an 11-year veteran. "He's been working really hard, and we were due."

The Kraken took Catton, a star for the WHL's Spokane Chiefs, with the eighth overall pick in the '24 draft. He logged his first NHL point on an assist in his debut on Oct. 20 — and added two more assists in his next four games — but that first goal had eluded him.

"Obviously I thought about it all the time, but I wouldn't say it was really impacting me too much," Catton said. "But it's just a relief more than anything to get it out of the way."

And with it out of the way, Catton quickly moved onto his second, scoring 14 minutes into the third, on a nifty backhand over Swayman's glove off a feed from Freddy Gaudreau.

"I thought it was awesome," Kraken coach Lane Lambert said. "I've said a few times prior to now that once he scores, I think he'll score a few."

Ja'Kobi Gillespie nets career-best 34 as No. 21 Tennessee corrals Texas

Ja'Kobi Gillespie poured in 22 of his career-high 34 points in the first half, and No. 21 Tennessee recorded its first Southeastern Conference win by taming Texas 85-71 on Tuesday night in Knoxville, Tenn.

Gillespie was exceptional on both ends of the court, hitting 12 of 18 from the floor, 5 of 8 from long range and all five free throws. The senior added five assists, four rebounds, and three steals.

J.P. Estrella added 11 points and six rebounds off the bench for the Volunteers (11-4, 1-1). DeWayne Brown II and Jaylen Carey had 10 points and four rebounds apiece.

Tennessee shot 52.7% from the floor and 40% from beyond the arc. The Volunteers also held a 44-18 edge in paint points.

Tramon Mark had 20 points and five rebounds for the Longhorns (9-6, 0-2). Camden Heide totaled 16 points and four rebounds. Simeon Wilcher pitched in with 10 points.

Tennessee brought defensive intensity from the opening tip, getting three steals and a blocked shot to lead 11-5 at 15:39 on Gillespie's layup and free throw to complete a three-point play. However, Wilcher drained a 3-pointer at 14:10 for the visitors' first lead, 12-11.

After that back-and-forth stretch between the schools, the Volunteers found their game in the middle part of the half.

They took off on a 19-8 run over an 8:04 stretch for a 30-20 lead that ended with Brown making a layup off an assist from Nate Ament.

Then, Tennessee rode the hot hand of Gillespie to outscore Texas, 18-13, and hold a 48-33 advantage after Amari Evans' tip-in at the buzzer.

The point guard was the driving force, netting 22 points including a pair of deep shots in the final two minutes as the Volunteers made 17 of 27 shots (63%) and held the Longhorns, who were led by Mark's nine points, to 39.3% shooting (11 of 28).

In the second half, Felix Okpara's successful tip at 18:31 lifted the lead to 54-33, but Texas sliced it to 60-45 on Chendall Weaver's layup at 12:29. Heide and Mark hit treys to make it a game against at 61-51 with 10:34 left.

The Volunteers responded with the next seven points and maintained the double-digit lead the rest of the way to improve to 3-0 over two seasons of the Longhorns playing in the conference.

Tennessee took advantage of 16 Texas turnovers to score 27 points.

Who should Ravens hire to replace John Harbaugh? With Lamar Jackson, Ravens have a luxury their counterparts don't

When theCleveland BrownsandLas Vegas Raidersinterview head coaches in the coming weeks, they know the most important question they must answer: How will we identify and develop a young quarterback?

When theNew York GiantsandTennessee Titansinterview head coaches, they, too, know the crux: First-round quarterbacksJaxson DartandCam Wardneed molding and development. The quarterback hopeful for each club is in the house. But how will he grow?

Shakeup at the top of theAtlanta FalconsandArizona Cardinalswill similarly require answers on a position with major question marks in 2026 and beyond.

These answers need not all come via offensive head coaches during a hiring cycle riper with defensive candidates than offensive. And in many successful franchises, including the reigning Super Bowl champions, the head coach's primary responsibility is not to call offensive plays.

But when teams front young quarterbacks or face questions at quarterback, the pressure to find the offensive panacea sharpens. Coaching searches often skew accordingly.

So theBaltimore Ravenshold a clear advantage.

Because asthey announced Tuesday night that 18-year head coach John Harbaugh was "relieved of his duties,"the Ravens are the lone team currently looking for a head coach that is not simultaneously searching to clarify their answer at quarterback.

Recruiting coaches while two-time MVPLamar Jacksonis under contract is a luxury.

Sure, plenty will argue that just as theRavens become the most attractive of seven NFL openingsand counting, Harbaugh immediately became the most attractive candidate when he hit the market. That doesn't mean the decision should be baffling. With a Super Bowl-winning coach and an MVP-winning quarterback, it should not be surprising if each believes he has the answers to future success. And if those answers don't align, a time comes for a change.

But as the Ravens look for a coach who will end their 13-year Super Bowl drought, they won't need as strong an emphasis on developing a quarterback.

[Get more Ravens news: Baltimore team feed]

That could allow them, should they want, to select the best overall candidate first. Their ceiling will immediately be high.

"We have so much talent on this team, and it's just disappointing that we're not able to be the team that's able to execute and win games when we need to win games," fullbackPatrick Ricardsaid this week. "As long as we have Lamar Jackson, I feel like this team can win a Super Bowl."

Among 7 openings, Ravens' Jackson offers best QB by far

A minority of coaches and executives across the league will argue that a coach in the Shanahan and McVay systems may prefer a more in-structure passer to build their offense around.

But more often, as the surprise of Harbaugh's dismissal hit Tuesday, league voices understood the new pecking order of openings.

"The jobs this cycle all lack QBs like normal so he's definitely the top QB and offense available for any coach," one NFC executive told Yahoo Sports.

An AFC assistant added of Jackson: "Any scheme fits him."

Jackson has shown that in eight seasons since the Ravens selected him with the 32nd pick of the 2018 NFL Draft. He's earned four Pro Bowl berths, three All-Pro honors and two MVP awards while winning 76 of 107 regular-season starts.

In aggregate, Jackson has completed 64.8% of his passes for 22,608 yards and 187 passing touchdowns to 56 interceptions. His 102.2 career passer rating and 8.25 air yards per attempt currently hold the all-time career records, per Pro Football Reference.

And those numbers don't even include Jackson's additional 6,522 yards and 35 touchdowns rushing.

His health has been inconsistent at times, Jackson most recently missing four games and about half of another this season with hamstring and back injuries. But while healthy, he thrived. Consider his Week 18 return from a back injury in Pittsburgh with the AFC North title on the line. While the Ravens lost on a walk-off missed field-goal attempt Sunday night, Jackson completed 11 of 18 passes for 238 yards and three touchdowns.

He activated another level in the fourth quarter, with 50- and 64-yard go-ahead touchdown passes to receiver Zay Flowers. The first came despite two defenders seeming to have Jackson wrapped up. Jackson was unfazed.

"Shoot — I cut a nose guard loose, and he somehow slipped out of it and threw the ball [50] yards for a touchdown," centerTyler Linderbaumsaid. "That's the kind of ability he has. So, he's fun to play for. [He's an] ultra competitor, and any time that ball is snapped to him, and it's in his hands, you know something electrifying can happen."

"The most electrifying player there is in this game."

After Harbaugh's final Ravens game, Jackson didn't endorse him

As reports of tension between Jackson and Harbaugh built this season, Jackson was asked last Thursday if he had a good relationship with Harbaugh.

"Yes, I believe so," he said. "I don't know where the noise came from. I don't know where the noise came from."

After the Ravens' 26-24 loss Sunday, Jackson was asked about Harbaugh again.

Did he want to see Harbaugh as his head coach next season?

"You're asking me about next year," Jackson said. "I'm so caught up in what just happened tonight. I can't focus on that right now, I just told you. Like he asked me, 'Are you stunned?'

"I'm stunned right now, and I'm still trying to process what's going on. I know we lost, but what the ... you know?"

Sure, the emotions of the season's sudden ending were fresh as Jackson's Herculean fourth quarter wasn't enough to advance to a sixth playoff berth in eight years. But Jackson was not the first player to receive a question about his coach's future at season's end. He would not have been the first to endorse a leader after a loss, especially one 18 years into his tenure with the organization with a Lombardi Trophy to his name and an AFC championship game berth in partnership with Jackson.

Jackson did not choose that.

By Tuesday night, Harbaugh was out. The Ravens thanked Harbaugh for a "tremendous" 18 years and the Super Bowl title.

Harbaugh issued his own statement, curiously including a smiley-face emoji as he said goodbye with "disappointment certainly, but more with GRATITUDE & APPRECIATION."

Is John Harbaugh the first NFL coach to include a smiley face in his statement about being fired?pic.twitter.com/NhHouUIL0C

— Jori Epstein (@JoriEpstein)January 6, 2026

The Ravens' coaching search, as team owner Steve Bisciotti said in a statement, begins. Their ability to move quickly on top defensive candidates including theLos Angeles Chargers' Jesse Minter,Los Angeles Rams' Chris Shula andHouston Texans' Matt Burke could prove to be an asset.

"That's a dream backfield to have Lamar andDerrick [Henry]and to play with those guys," Ricard said. "I feel like, as long as they're here, this team has a shot — no matter who else is playing."
