Ole Miss S Nick Cull's targeting call reversed vs Miami in Peach Bowl

Mississippi football's Nick Cull avoided an ejection during theCollege Football Playoff Fiesta Bowl semifinalon Thursday, Jan. 8.

As Malachi Toney reeled in a catch from Carson Beck at the Miami 49 in the first quarter, he was hit by Cull in a helmet-to-helmet collision. Right away, the officials flagged Cull for targeting, with both Toney and Cull staying down on the field with an injury.

After officials reviewed the play, the call on the field was overturned, as the officials determined that Cull did not launch and the collision seemed to be incidental. Replay assistant Matt Austin concurred with the call on the field.

The play had a major impact on the game as well. If the call had been upheld, Miami would have had the ball at theOle Miss34-yard line with a chance to expand its 3-0 lead. However, a few plays later, the Hurricanes were forced to punt from the 49-yard line.

On the first play of the second quarter, Ole Miss running back Kewan Lacey scored on a 73-yard run to give the Rebels a 7-3 lead.

Because he was not called for targeting, Cull was not ejected from the game, which means Ole Miss will have him for the remainder of the game, if he can clear the concussion protocol. He was in the tent following the play.

Cull has 15 total tackles and three pass deflections this season for the Rebels.

Meanwhile, Toney went to the medical tent briefly for the Hurricanes, but returned to the game.

No. 12 Michigan State pushes past Northwestern in second half

Carson Cooper had 18 points and nine rebounds to lead No. 12 Michigan State to a 76-66 win over Northwestern in a Big Ten contest on Thursday in East Lansing, Mich.

Jaxon Kohler had 15 points and eight rebounds and Jeremy Fears scored 15 points for the Spartans (14-2, 4-1), which overcame 15 turnovers.

Nick Martinelli scored a game-high 28 points in defeat for the Wildcats (8-7, 0-4).

Northwestern trailed by 10 with 4:27 to play, but went on a 10-2 run to cut the Michigan State lead to 64-62 with 2:04 remaining.

Michigan State answered, taking a 68-62 lead with 1:17 left after a layup by Fears and a dunk by Coen Carr.

Following a miss, Northwestern fouled Cooper on the rebound with 48.2 seconds remaining, and Cooper hit two free throws to make it an eight-point lead.

After another Northwestern miss, Fears was fouled and hit two free throws with 36.8 seconds to go to give Michigan State a 72-62 lead and all but wrap up the game.

Neither team shot well from 3-point range. Michigan State went 5 of 18 from behind the 3-point line, while Northwestern went 6 of 26.

Northwestern trailed for much of the first half before ending it on an 11-0 run to take a 35-28 halftime lead after a steal and layup by Jayden Reid. It was the largest halftime deficit of the season for Michigan State, as the Spartans were held scoreless for the last 5:05.

Michigan State cut Northwestern's lead to 41-38 with 14:37 to go after a jumper by Kohler.

Northwestern responded by scoring four straight points, but Michigan State went on a 10-0 run to take a 48-45 lead with 10:05 left. Cameron Ward's layup and three-point play sparked the rally.

The Spartans then took a 52-47 lead with 9:15 after an electrifying dunk in transition by Carr.

Holding a two-point edge with 8:49 remaining, Michigan State scored six straight on three free throws by Fears and a 3-pointer by Kohler to grab a 58-50 lead with 6:37 left.

A former girlfriend ofKansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Riceon Wednesday accused him of domestic abuse, leading both the club and the NFL to acknowledge the allegations.

Dacoda Nichole Jonesposted a series of Instagram pictures showing bruises, cuts, scars and property damage, writing that she's "dealt with abuse for years, me and this man decided to break up a couple months ago."

Although Jones did not name the person involved, it's known that she has two children with Rice, who has played three seasons for the Chiefs.

"The club is aware of the allegations on social media and is in communication with the National Football League," the Chiefs said in a statement. "We have no further comment at this time."

The NFL, which has taken action against players accused of domestic abuse, also acknowledged these allegations against Rice.

"We have been in contact with the club about the matter which will be reviewed under the league's personal conduct policy," the NFL said.

Rice's agent and attorney did not immediately respond to NBC News' requests for comment on Thursday.

Rice missed thisseason's first six games, serving a suspension after pleading guilty to felony charges for driving a Lamborghini Urus SUV at 119 mph and making "multiple aggressive maneuvers around traffic" before striking other vehicles, prosecutors said.

The player did not check on the welfare of those in the other vehicles after the crash and instead fled on foot, officials said.

Star tight end Travis Kelce and receiver Tyquan Thorntonwore T-shirts with images of Riceand the message "Free 4" ahead of the teams home opener.

The Texas native broke into the league in 2023, making 79 catches for 938 yards and seven touchdowns, helping Kansas City win theSuper Bowl that season.

For 18 teams who didn't make the playoffs, the NFL offseason has begun. That includes some of the league's most high-profile franchises.

Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins will start completely fresh with a new regime as the teamfired head coach Mike McDaniel. At first, it seemed as if McDaniel might have done enough over the second half of the season to keep his job, thanks to an improved run game and the team never appearing to quit despite the rough start. Miami now has a chance to pivot from McDaniel's Tua-centric style of offense, but due to the significant investment in that approach, it might not be a quick or easy path out.

New York Jets

The Jets are hoping that this timeline will mirror the Detroit Lions, where Aaron Glenn came from as defensive coordinator. Detroit went 3-13-1 in Dan Campbell's first season before a 9-8 record in Year 2. Though unlike the Lions, the Jets will need to find a quarterback. Justin Fields was signed to potentially be that player, but he lasted until only Week 11 before he was replaced. With a ton of draft capital and salary cap space, 2025 could be seen as more of a Year 0 for the Jets and this regime.

Baltimore Ravens

Many of the bones that made the Ravens a Super Bowl contender are still in place, headlined by quarterback Lamar Jackson. But Baltimore now has another offseason of figuring out what went wrong. Only this time, it comes much earlier than anticipated with a few more questions that need to be answered — including, for the first time in 18 years, what comes next at head coach after theRavens fired John Harbaugh.

Cincinnati Bengals

After another disappointing, injury-ridden year, the Bengals will keep Zac Taylor as head coach and Duke Tobin as de facto general manager and try to figure out how to build out a defense and more offensive structure around their three best players, Joe Burrow, Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins.

Cleveland Browns

This Browns' season was never going to be about success in 2025. Cleveland seemingly hit on many of the non-quarterback 2025 draft picks — tight end Harold Fannin Jr. and linebacker Carson Schwesinger will be top contenders for Rookie of the Year on each side of the ball, if not outright winners — while the Browns picked up a ton of future draft capital, entering the 2026 draft with two first-round picks.Kevin Stefanski is outas head coach, but general manager Andrew Berry will stay on to oversee what the next era of the Browns might be.

Indianapolis Colts

It would have been nearly impossible to think the Colts' 2025 season would end up here after how it started. The Colts were first in point differential through the first 10 weeks of the season, and 28th from Week 12 on. With Daniel Jones injured and signed to only a one-year deal, plus having no first-round pick, the Colts find themselves in a much tougher offseason situation than anyone could have imagined midway through November.

Tennessee Titans

The Titans had hope after drafting QB Cam Ward with the first overall draft pick in 2025, but things never completely came together. Ward flashed, but a lack of talent, especially at receiver, kept Tennessee's offense from finding its stride. Head coach Brian Callahan was fired after Week 6 with a 1-5 record, 3-14 overall in two seasons with the Titans. Now, Tennessee will search for the next head coach in an attempt to get the most out of Ward and build up a roster that has a young offense while featuring one of the oldest defenses in the leagueby snap-weighted age.

Kansas City Chiefs

Under normal circumstances, this season might have been just a small step back for a perennial Super Bowl contender — a chance to regroup and go again. But givenTravis Kelce's ageand the late-season ACL tear for Patrick Mahomes, and nowgrave domestic violence allegations against Rashee Rice, this feels like a bigger moment — the end of an era of this version of the Chiefs. It might not be, but for the first time in the Mahomes era, the Chiefs don't feel inevitable. This offseason will be the first and an important step in trying to get that feeling back.

Las Vegas Raiders

By hiring Pete Carroll, the entire idea behind the 2025 Raiders centered on having a well-coached team that raised the floor of the talent on the roster. It was immediately apparent that would not be the case. Now theRaiders have the first overall pick of the 2026 NFL Draft and will be looking for a new head coachwith Carroll one-and-done, staring down a complete rebuild the franchise tried to avoid with last offseason's moves.

Dallas Cowboys

As good as Dak Prescott and the offense were, the Cowboys were one of the league's worst defenses the entire season and ultimately fired coordinator Matt Eberflus. Due to the struggles, Dallas traded for Quinnen Williams at the deadline. Williams is a fantastic player and immediately made an impact for the Cowboys, but it cost a 2026 second-round draft pick, leaving Dallas with no Day 2 picks this year, and a single 2027 first-round pick. The offense wasn't enough to make up for the defensive deficiencies and the Cowboys missed the playoffs in a season when playoff spots felt more wide open than ever.

New York Giants

For the third straight season, the Giants are looking at a top-six pick in the draft. While some of the young talent was tantalizing, the Giants didn't have close to a full competitive roster. After going 2-8 this past season,Brian Daboll was fired as head coach. The Giants now need a new head coach, and have decided general manager Joe Schoen will stick around.

Washington Commanders

After a season when everything broke right for the Commanders, just about everything went wrong in 2025. Last season, Washington went 7-2 in games decided by seven points or fewer. The Commanders were 0-5 in those games this past season. Washington finished the season in the bottom five of defensive DVOA.Now defensive coordinator Joe Whitt and offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury are not coming back next season. While the Commanders still have the bones of the impressive 2024 team — and a likely healthy Jayden Daniels set to return — this is a franchise that will have to step back and retool a bit earlier than expected.

Detroit Lions

A 9-8 record is disappointing given where the Lions had been, but this is still a team that finished third in DVOA — it was not a total disaster. Detroit finished third in yards per play on offense, though there were times when the limits of Jared Goff as a quarterback were more exposed than in years past. A shaky offense forced Campbell to take over play-calling in the middle of the season and theLions will look for a new offensive coordinatorin the offseason. The Lions still had the eighth-best point differential in the league, better than NFC playoff teams such as the 49ers, Eagles, Packers, Bears and Panthers. It's hardly a consolation prize, but this team is still on the right track.

Minnesota Vikings

Expectations were high for the Vikings coming off a 14-win season in 2024. However, the main goal of 2025 was to get as much information as possible on quarterback J.J. McCarthy. Minnesota disappointed and also did not get a clear evaluation of McCarthy as a quarterback. Despite that, the Vikings still finished above their win total and over .500. That was mostly thanks to a Brian Flores defense that ranked third in DVOA.Flores is a free agent, who could be hired elsewhereas a head coach or defensive coordinator. If most of the pieces stay in place, the Vikings remain a well-structured team that is just average quarterback play away from contending.

Atlanta Falcons

The Falcons won the final game of the regular season to reach a three-way tie in record at the top of the NFC South. But Atlanta's win sent Carolina to the playoffs, while the Falcons officially finished third in the division andfired head coach Raheem Morris and general manager Terry Fontenot. The issue with Atlanta over the past two seasons was a clear misevaluation of where the team was and how to build the roster around it. A four-game win streak wasn't enough to salvage the season. Neither were the individual bright spots, like Drake London and Bijan Robinson. Even the defense impressed in stretches, but it was never enough to make the Falcons feel like a franchise with a coherent plan and path forward.

New Orleans Saints

Framing the 2025 season as a success for the Saints would be a stretch, but there's a lot more to like than would meet the eye. First-year head coach Kellen Moore laid a solid foundation for his offense, and the Saints' defense reached the top half of the league in DVOA under coordinator Brandon Staley. Tyler Shough was 22nd among quarterbacks in EPA per play but was in the top 10 over the final five weeks of the regular season, when the Saints went 4-1.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Bucs were 6-2 at their Week 9 bye and wound up missing the playoffs. There was a lot of attention given to Baker Mayfield's dropoff after the bye, but the Bucs went from 13th in EPA per play to only 18th. However, Tampa Bay dropped from sixth in EPA per play on defense before the bye — aided by a strong run defense — to 28th post-bye. The Bucs can hope that better health leads to more success in 2026, but there should be some reflection on what went wrong and what needs to be fixed to keep the franchise moving forward. The Bucs have decided toretain head coach Todd Bowles, though theyfired offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard,QB coach Thad Lewis and special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey.

Arizona Cardinals

Offensively, things never clicked. Kyler Murray was in and out of the lineup with injuries, whichultimately ended his season early. Now there are big questions about his future with the franchise. There were bright spots on defense, like rookie cornerback Denzel Burke and free-agent signing Josh Sweat, but injuries hamstrung this team all over.Jonathan Gannon was let goas head coach after three seasons, none of them over .500, and a 15-36 record.

TikTok picked by FIFA as video content partner at 2026 World Cup

GENEVA (AP) —TikTokwas picked by FIFA as the first "preferred platform" for video content on social media at a men's World Cup, the soccer body said Thursday.

The World Cup tie-in will see creators get special access at the48-nation tournamentbeing co-hosted in 16 cities — 11 in the United States, three in Mexico and two in Canada — from June 11 to July 19.

FIFA said World Cup broadcast rights holders can livestream parts of the 104 games at a dedicated hub on the TikTok app, which has more than 170 million users in the U.S.

"Additionally, a wide group of creators will receive the opportunity to use and co-create FIFA archival footage," it said.

FIFA did not state the value of the deal, or details of any tender process and rival bidders. YouTube had a low-levelsponsor dealthat included access for creators at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

What kind of live content can be streamed this year, at a tournament where commercial partners' exclusive rights are fiercely protected, also was not specified by FIFA.

TikTok's partnership with MLS and Apple TV led to the platform carrying footage from cameras dedicated just to following soccer great Lionel Messi playing in games for Inter Miami.

FIFA promised fans would be taken "behind the curtain and closer to the action than ever before," its secretary general Mattias Grafström said.

TikTok's in-app World Cup hub also will give fans "participation incentives" like custom stickers, filters and gamification features.

"TikTok GamePlanturns fandom into measurable business results for our sports partners, with fans being 42% more likely to tune in to live matches after watching sports content on TikTok," said its global head of content, James Stafford.

TikTok became the world's most downloaded phone app while also under threat of being shut down in the United States as a national security threat.

In December, TikTok's China-based parent company ByteDanceagreed to form a U.S. joint venturewith investors Oracle, Silver Lake and MGX. That deal is scheduled to be sealed later this month.

Falcons to interview former longtime QB and NFL MVP Matt Ryan for new president of football position

ATLANTA (AP) — Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank said Thursday former quarterback Matt Ryan will be one of the candidates interviewed for the newly created position of president of football.

Blank said the interviews would begin Thursday. The president of football will be involved in selecting a new coach and general manager. The Falconsfired coach Raheem Morris and general manager Terry Fontenoton Sunday, hours after the completion of an 8-9 season.

Ryan, the most accomplished quarterback in Falcons history as the starter from 2008-21, currently is an NFL analyst for CBS. Ryan, the 2016 NFL MVP, holds most of the team's major passing records, including most yards, touchdown passes and completions.

Blank said Ryan, 40, will be interviewed despite having no front office experience.

"My response to that would be Matt Ryan came into the league as a rookie in 2008, ended up leading a locker room for 14 years, leading in a huddle, being a great player, leading the players, supporting coaches," Blank said. "So his EQ and IQ when it comes to football is extraordinarily high."

Blank said he intentionally avoided giving the new position the title of president of football operations.

"It's not football operations, it is football, because sometimes people can interpret that as being, well, they're responsible for the operations stuff, the backroom stuff, administrative stuff, but this person we're trying to hire will be responsible for everything that relates to football."

Blank has made filling the new position a priority. The coach and general manager will report to the president.

Blank said his interest in Ryan is based on his "long relationship" with the former quarterback.

"He's an outstanding individual, great community leader, and the kind of person you'd certainly want to consider in that position," Blank said. "But we have other candidates that we're interviewing as well over the next couple of days, starting this afternoon, this evening."

Blank, 83, has owned the Falcons since 2002 and acknowledged in aletter to fansreleased on Monday he is disappointed in the team's streak of eight consecutive losing seasons. He said Thursday that's why he chose to fire Morris and Fontenot, and announce other front office changes, despite the team closing the season with four straight wins.

"It was my conclusion as the season went on that we could not achieve or were not achieving at the level that I thought this roster was capable of performing at," Blank said. "... I think we're capable of getting to another level. ... In my judgment I felt that two years of (Morris) being (the coach) of this team and Terry after five years, I felt I've seen enough to know that we that we could do better than this, in my heart."

The Falcons haven't enjoyed a winning season or appeared in the playoffs since 2017. Morris was fired after a 16-18 record in two seasons, and Fontenot was fired following five seasons.

Blank saidJohn Harbaugh, who was fired on Tuesday following 18 seasons as coach of the Baltimore Ravens, would be a candidate to replace Morris if interested in the job.

"John has been one of the most successful coaches in the last 20 years and already has won at every level," Blank said. "And so he would certainly be a candidate we would want to spend some time with. Whether or not he would have an interest in Atlanta, I don't know."

The president of football will replace Greg Beadles, who was hired as president and chief executive officer and will oversee business operations. In his new role, Beadles replaces Rich McKay, who will continue as CEO of AMB Sports and Entertainment with responsibilities including the role of Mercedes-Benz Stadium in this year's World Cup and plans for Atlanta's 2028 Super Bowl.

Blank hired the consulting firm Sportsology to study the Falcons. An executive search firm, ZRG Partners, will assist on the coach search and Sportsology will be involved in the search for a new general manager.
