Reilly Smith's 2 goals lead Golden Knights to 5-3 comeback win over Blue Jackets

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Reilly Smith scored twice, Mark Stone extended his goal streak to six games and the Vegas Golden Knights overcame an earlyinjury to goalie Carter Hart, rallying past the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-3 on Thursday night.

It was Smith's first two-goal game since scoring twice on April 5 last season against Calgary. Stone had three points and added to his career-best goal streak that is one behind the Golden Knights record set by Max Pacioretty in 2021.

Jack Eichel had a goal and an assist for Vegas, Brett Howden also scored and Mitch Marner and Tomas Hertl each had two assists. Akira Schmid made 21 saves in relief of Hart, who went out at 8:24 of the first period.

Boone Jenner had a goal and an assist for the Blue Jackets. Kent Johnson and Kirill Marchenko both scored, and Sean Monahan finished with two assists. Jet Greaves stopped 21 shots.

It's the first time the Golden Knights have won back-to-back games since winning at Philadelphia and Columbus on Dec. 11 and 13. Vegas, however, is tied with Edmonton for first place in the Pacific Division.

Columbus took a 2-0 lead midway through the first period, the first goal coming when Jenner got the puck past a clearly compromised Hart.

But then the Golden Knights roared back as Smith scored with 7:40 left in the first period and then 5:19 into the second to tie the game. Goals by Eichel at even strength and Stone on a power play made it 4-2 entering the second intermission.

Home, sweet home for Canes: Miami to play for the CFP national championship at Hard Rock Stadium

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Miami is flying home on Friday from the Fiesta Bowl. It'll be the last flight for the Hurricanes this season.

They'll get to the next game — the last game — by bus.

For the fifth time, Miami will be playing for a national championship on its home field. The first four of those games were at the now-demolished Orange Bowl; this one against either Oregon or Indiana in the College Football Playoff title game on Jan. 19 will be at Hard Rock Stadium, the Miami Dolphins' home field, where the Hurricanes have played their home games since 2008.

"We're back in Hard Rock," quarterback Carson Beck said after he produced the go-ahead touchdown — with his legs, not his arm — inMiami's 31-27 win over Mississippiin the Fiesta Bowl on Thursday night. "So, I think that's all that needs to be said."

Miami is 3-1 in its other national-title-game appearances at home — though it should be noted that in the Bowl Championship Series and now CFP era when there has been a designated "national championship game," the Hurricanes have not gotten this far.

"This team knows they are the team and the time is now," coach Mario Cristobal said during the on-field celebration Thursday night.

Other teams have won national championships close to home over the years. For example, Southern California claims national titles in the 1931 and 1932 seasons after winning Rose Bowls (it wasn't USC's home field, but not exactly a long road trip for the Trojans, either). Those came before The Associated Press began awarding a national championship trophy with the 1936 season.

In recent years, LSU won a BCS title (but not the AP title) for the 2003 season by winning the Sugar Bowl in nearby New Orleans — about 80 miles from Baton Rouge. LSU secured national championships for the 2007 and 2019 seasons by winning in New Orleans as well.

Being at home — or near home — hasn't guaranteed titles, though. Texas beat USC in the Rose Bowl to win the 2005 season's national championship. Alabama faced what might have been considered road games in the 2011 and 2017 seasons and won both, topping LSU in New Orleans and Georgia in Atlanta for national crowns.

And Miami's most recent home title game was a loss as well, when the Hurricanes fell to Oklahoma 24-17 to end the 1994 season.

Here's look at Miami's previous home title-game appearances.

1983 season: Miami 31, Nebraska 30

The Hurricanes ran out to a 17-0 lead over the top-ranked, unbeaten and heavily favored Cornhuskers, who clawed within 31-30 with 48 seconds left. Nebraska coach Tom Osborne decided to try a 2-point conversion instead of playing for the tie; the pass fell incomplete and Miami finished atop the AP poll. "We're No. 1," Hurricanes coach Howard Schnellenberger said. "No doubt about it." He was right, and Miami had its first national title.

1987 season: Miami 20, Oklahoma 14

Oklahoma came in undefeated and ranked No. 1, Miami came in undefeated and ranked No. 2. The teams were tied 7-7 at halftime, but the Hurricanes scored 10 points in the fourth quarter and held on to win their second national championship.

1991 season: Miami 22, Nebraska 0

Miami's fourth national title, and third won at the Orange Bowl, was no contest. The Hurricanes led 13-0 after just 11 minutes of play and the defense never let Nebraska — a double-digit underdog — get on track.

1994 season: Nebraska 24, Miami 17

In the final year of the short-lived Bowl Coalition era, the Hurricanes ran out to a 10-0 lead after the first quarter. But the Cornhuskers wouldn't go away, and Cory Schlesinger ran for two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to cap the comeback and lead Nebraska to the win.

Akheem Mesidor injury update: Miami DL leaves Fiesta Bowl with hurt arm

As Miami football engages in a slugfest with Mississippi in the Fiesta Bowl, it may be without one of its top pass-rushers down the stretch.

Defensive lineman Akheem Mesidor stayed down after a play when the Rebels' Brycen Sanders fell on him. Mesidor was shown going into the medical tent with an elbow brace on.

Mesidor, who led theHurricaneswith 10.5 sacks this season and is the other half of Miami's feared pass-rushing duo alongside Rueben Bain Jr., suffered Sanders' full weight on his right arm. As he walked off the field, his right arm was hanging by his side.

Miami's front seven has been its calling card, and Mesidor is a key part of it. If the injury is something substantial, it would be a huge blow for the Hurricanes' staunch defense as it looks to hold off the potent Rebels down the stretch of the College Football Playoff semifinal matchup.

Lions have reached out to Mike McDaniel about their offensive coordinator opening, AP source says

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — TheDetroit Lionshave reached out toMike McDanielabout their offensive coordinator opening, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Thursday.

The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the team's interest in the former Miami Dolphins coach has not been publicly disclosed.

Detroitfired offensive coordinator John Mortonon Tuesday in a move that was expected after the team missed the playoffs and coach Dan Campbell took over play-calling duties midway through the season.

The Lions are looking for their third offensive coordinator in three seasons. Former OCBen Johnsonleft the Lions a little more than a year ago to lead the Chicago Bears and helped them win the NFC North.

Campbell said Monday he hadn't decided whether he would continue to call plays next season, but he would likely let McDaniel handle the duties if he's hired by the Lions.

McDaniel was fired Thursday after the Dolphins went 7-10 this season. Miami was 35-33 under McDaniel and lost in the first round of the playoffs two times. He arrived in Miami in 2022 after one season as San Francisco's offensive coordinator.

The Lions (9-8) finished last in the NFC North after winning it the previous two seasons and earning top seeding in the conference last year.

"For our standards, this was a disappointment," general manager Brad Holmes said.

Ole Miss S Nick Cull's targeting call reversed vs Miami in Peach Bowl

Mississippi football's Nick Cull avoided an ejection during theCollege Football Playoff Fiesta Bowl semifinalon Thursday, Jan. 8.

As Malachi Toney reeled in a catch from Carson Beck at the Miami 49 in the first quarter, he was hit by Cull in a helmet-to-helmet collision. Right away, the officials flagged Cull for targeting, with both Toney and Cull staying down on the field with an injury.

After officials reviewed the play, the call on the field was overturned, as the officials determined that Cull did not launch and the collision seemed to be incidental. Replay assistant Matt Austin concurred with the call on the field.

The play had a major impact on the game as well. If the call had been upheld, Miami would have had the ball at theOle Miss34-yard line with a chance to expand its 3-0 lead. However, a few plays later, the Hurricanes were forced to punt from the 49-yard line.

On the first play of the second quarter, Ole Miss running back Kewan Lacey scored on a 73-yard run to give the Rebels a 7-3 lead.

Because he was not called for targeting, Cull was not ejected from the game, which means Ole Miss will have him for the remainder of the game, if he can clear the concussion protocol. He was in the tent following the play.

Cull has 15 total tackles and three pass deflections this season for the Rebels.

Meanwhile, Toney went to the medical tent briefly for the Hurricanes, but returned to the game.
