NBA official Bill Kennedy out indefinitely with hamstring strain after leaving Sixers-Magic in wheelchair

Bill Kennedy won't be officiating any NBA games for a while.

The veteran referee has been sidelined indefinitely after suffering a hamstring strain in Friday's game between the Philadelphia 76ers and Orlando Magic, according to Prime Video's Chris Haynes. There is reportedly hope Kennedy can return before the end of the regular season.

Kennedy sustained the non-contact injury while running down the court with the Sixers in transition, pulling up lame and grabbing his right leg. He was eventually taken off the court in a wheelchair, in clear distress.

The NBA later announced Kennedy had sustained a right leg injury, but didn't reveal any more information. James Williams and Michael Smith continued to officiate the game, which the Sixers won 103-91.

An NBA official going back to the 1990s, the 59-year-old Kennedy is one of the more well-known refs in the league, particularly for his colorful replay review explanations. Sixers-Magic was his 24th game of the season.

The night belonged to Amber Glenn, but she wouldn't celebrate it alone

ST. LOUIS —Alysa Liuand Isabeau Levito had to watch.

The figure skaters had just finished their own sensational free skates and stuck around near the rink to watchAmber Glenncap off an epic night on the ice here at the2026 U.S. figure skating championships.

When Glenn stepped inside the rink, on the verge of securing her third consecutive national title, she felt like she was going to throw up, trying to fake it until she could make it.

"I was just trying to get in touch with my body and get a feel of the ice," she said.

One triple Axel into the skate was all it took to know there was no faking this. This was Glenn's night — and she becameU.S. champion for the third straight year.

Glenn and coach Damon Allen burst with shock and elation and tears when her season-best score of 150.50 posted. They sat with each other in the kiss-and-cry, soaking in Glenn being the first woman to win three straight titles since Michelle Kwan's reign of dominance from 1998-2005.

But Glenn wasn't going to revel in this moment without Liu and Levito. She brought them into the kiss-and-cry with her, and they shared a long embrace, expressing appreciation for one another.

"I'm still in disbelief," Glenn said. "Honestly, the ladies were on fire this competition, and I couldn't be more proud of how far we've come as Team USA."

Just two days prior, the women put on a performance for the ages in the short program, leaving some to wonder if they witnessed the greatest night in U.S. women's figure skating history. How were these women going to top that?

But they wound up doing just that as the final three performances of the night, each scoring a season-high mark. Levito was elegant and graceful in her "Cinema Paradiso" performance.Liu's revamped "Lady Gaga" medleylooked massively improved compared to a few months ago.

Then Glenn put the bow on it all with a fierce program that showed no hints of a nervous skater. Rather, she performed like someone who has made immense progress in handling the pressure and expectations that come with being one of the top skaters in the country.

"I've been working on the mental and physical side for a while now, and I'm happy to see it come together," Glenn said. "I just need to embrace that nothing's going to be perfect all the time, and as long as I keep that in mind, then I should be able to go forward without feeling too impostery."

Her free skate left the audience wowed, and made for a great time to watch for Liu and Levito. Levito told Glenn she wasn't worried at all because Glenn looked like she had it down, while Liu was just trying to put herself in Glenn's shoes and just breathe.

"Everyone's telling me it was fun to watch. I'm like, I agree," she said. "Watching Amber was really fun for me."

For as much as this night belongs to Glenn, she was keen on making it about the trio. She could hear Lady Gaga playing for Liu and the roars of the crowd, and she caught the second half of Levito's program.

Knowing her fellow skaters rocked the arena as much as she did, Glenn wanted to share the stage with Liu and Levito. It was just another example ofhow this generation of stars areset on sharing love and accomplishments with each other.

This trio left no doubt that they will be the three women representing the U.S. at the 2026 Winter Olympics. Even better, they are formidable contenders to break the 20-year Olympic medal drought in women's skating.

When that happens, you can bet it'll be just like Friday night in St. Louis, all celebrating together.

Mavs' Anthony Davis out indefinitely with hand injury. Is surgery next?

TheDallas Mavericks, once again, are set to be withoutAnthony Davis.

An MRI taken Friday, Jan. 9 revealed that Davis, 32, suffered ligament damage in his left hand, the team said in a press release. The Mavericks added that Davis is seeking multiple opinions.

ESPN was the first to report newsof the diagnosis and said the injury may require surgery, potentially forcing him to miss several months.

Davis suffered the injury Thursday, Jan. 8 in agame against the Utah Jazz. It came late in the fourth quarter of the game, an eventual 116-114 Utah victory, when Jazz forward Lauri Markkanen drove to the basketalong the right baseline. Davis went to defend Markkanen and when the two made contact, Davis immediately favored his left hand.

He briefly remained in the game but was then later substituted.

At the time he left the game, Davis had scored 21 points on 10-of-20 shooting, adding 11 rebounds and 4 assists.

For Davis and the Mavericks, it's another frustrating setback that has kept him from assimilating with the team; earlier this season, Davis dealt with a lower foot and Achilles injury that also sidelined him for a few weeks.Dallas traded for Davis in February 2025as part of the deal that shippedLuka Dončićto theLos Angeles Lakers.

Since acquiring him, Davis has played only 29 out of 80 games.

The Mavericks have struggled amid injuries to Davis and veteran point guard Kyrie Irving, who suffereda torn anterior cruciate ligament in March 2025. That has leftNo. 1 overall rookie Cooper Flaggto carry the Mavericks. Flagg only recently turned 19 years old and has a diverse skill set, but his effectiveness has been limited at times when opposing teams have focused their energy on limiting him as Davis and Irving have been sidelined.

Complicating this further, Davis had been expected to be a potential trade target, as the Mavericks are undergoing something of a rebuild. The teamfired former general manager Nico HarrisonNov. 11, 2025, and Davis' age and salary may not align with Dallas' long-term plans to compete.

The NBA trade deadline is Feb. 5; given the projected timeline of Davis' injury, that likely means he will remain sidelined beyond the deadline.

In 20 games this season, Davis is averaging 20.4 points, 11.1 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game.

49ers LT Trent Williams questionable, but 'confident' he'll face Eagles

San Francisco left tackle Trent Williams is tracking toward playing, but the 12-time Pro Bowl selection will be a game-time decision for Sunday's wild-card matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles.

"Definitely more confident," Williams said when asked about his chances of playing. "Honestly, I'm kind of pushing the limits on how much (time) is required for it. So it will probably be in the back of my mind for a little bit. But once I get out there and get the juices flowing and the adrenaline going, I don't think it should be a big problem."

Williams practiced on a limited basis both Thursday and Friday and said he feels good enough to suit up, even as he acknowledged he's accelerating the timeline on a hamstring strain suffered Dec. 28 while chasing down a Chicago Bears defender on the first snap.

His availability looms large: since 2020, the 49ers are 61-32 with Williams and 4-13 when he's out.

Wideout Ricky Pearsall is a tougher call. He didn't practice this week after aggravating a knee injury against the Bears and sitting out Week 18. Pearsall has battled ailments all season, appearing in nine games with 36 catches for 528 yards. He's listed as questionable.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan left the door open for Pearsall despite the missed practice time, noting the second-year receiver did some side work Thursday before being held out Friday.

Five other 49ers are listed as questionable: linebackers Dee Winters (ankle) and Luke Gifford (quadriceps), defensive lineman Keion White (groin/hamstring), receiver Jacob Cowing (hamstring) and CB Renardo Green (ankle).

This US figure skating pair repeated as national champs while in Olympic limbo

ST. LOUIS — There's so muchAlisa EfimovaandMisha Mitrofanovdon't have answers for in this period of uncertainty, but they do know one thing: They are the U.S. champions once again.

The duo defended their U.S. title, winning the 2026 pairs championshipafter another strong performance in the free skate on Saturday.

They entered the night with a healthy lead, only needing to avoid major mistakes in the free skate to secure the win. It was a shaky start when Mitrofanov stumbled during their double Axel sequence, throwing them off the rhythm and leaving the audience in a gasp as they wondered if there was trouble.

Luckily for them, it was smooth after that. The lifts were executed with precision, and they shared an embrace once their program was complete.

Turns out, they didn't even need the seven-point lead they entered the night with. Efimova and Mitrofanov scored 132.40 on their free skate, the best of the competition. They won with a combined score of 207.71, more than 10 points ahead of the second place team in Ellie Kam and Danny O'Shea (197.12). Katie McBeath and Daniil Parkman overcame a fifth place finish in the short program to finish third overall with a score of 187.45.

Efimova and Mitrofanov have proven themselves as the top American pair. Now they'll hope they can prove it on the biggest stage.

As of Friday, Efimova is still awaiting to receiveher American citizenship, rendering the team ineligible at the moment to represent the U.S. at the2026 Winter Olympics. They are under a tight deadline with the Olympic team announcement scheduled for Sunday afternoon.

WNBA, players won't extend CBA deadline; 'status quo' period expected

The WNBA and the Women's National Basketball Players Association will not extend the previous collective bargaining agreement before Friday's deadline.

As New York Liberty star Breanna Stewart first told reporters Thursday, the two sides remain far apart on multiple issues and were not going to hammer out an agreement before the deadline -- which had already been extended twice, first from Oct. 31 to Nov. 30 and then again to January.

This does not mean a strike is imminent, even though the players previously voted to give their union authority to initiate one.

A strike is "not something that we're going to do right this second, but we have that in our back pocket," Stewart said Thursday.

ESPN and USA Today also reported that the league is not planning to move toward a lockout, with both parties believing a 2026 season will be played.

This leaves what is called a "status quo" period, in which the working conditions from the previous CBA remain in place and the sides are able to keep negotiating.

Among the key issues still at play are the levels of player salaries and the methods of revenue sharing. The WNBA's latest offer included between 50-70% of the league's net revenues going to the players, while the union wants a certain percentage of the gross revenue instead, per ESPN and USA Today reports.

The WNBA has not lost games due to labor issues in its 30-year history. However, the continued negotiation standoff shrinks the league's offseason in which it has to fit in an expansion draft for the new Portland and Toronto franchises, free agency and the college draft in a shorter period.
