Indiana adds to celebration as football champs take victory lap and basketball team beats Purdue

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Indiana Hoosiers fans got their dream doubleheader Tuesday night.

First, they watchedcollege football's new national championstake one more victory lap. Then they saw Indiana's basketball team take its cue by keeping the momentum rolling and holding off its top rival, No. 12 Purdue, for the squad'sbiggest win of the season— and yet another celebration.

For first-year coach Darian DeVries, it was his initial glimpse of the rivalry and Assembly Hall at full throttle. And he credited those raucous fans with playing a key role in the latest chapter of Bloomington's storybook sports year.

"When that place is loud and rocking like that, it's a big, big deal for us," he said. "There are a lot of tough places to play in the Big Ten and we want this to be one of the toughest places there is, not only in the Big Ten but in the country, because it does matter. It makes a difference in games."

The fans certainly did their part Tuesday.

They arrived in new shirts celebrating both the improbable championship the football team captured and the journey it took to get there. They coordinated their outfits perfectly to create a section-by-section image of crimson-and-cream candy-striped strips. And each time the Hoosiers needed a boost, especially late as the Boilermakers tried to overcome an 11-point halftime deficit, their loud cheers made it difficult to communicate.

On the court, it was simply old-fashioned Hoosiers basketball at its finest — with a sprinkle of the same concoction that fueled the football team's run.

Indiana was tough and physical, played hard-nosed defense, outhustled Purdue and beat the Boilermakers at their own game. A perfect recipe, especially after coach Curt Cignetti's initial comments about his disdain for Purdue.

Clearly, things haven't been the same lately for the Boilermakers in Bloomington. Indiana has won four of the last five matchups when a ranked Purdue team visits Assembly Hall. And Indiana's cast of basketball newcomers seemed to steal a page right out of Cignetti's playbook by coming together when the moments got toughest.

Lamar Wilkerson and Conor Enright combined to make the final four free throws in front of a revved-up crowd to close it out.

The Boilermakers have lost a season-worst three straight and will get another shot at Indiana, in front of their home crowd, on Feb. 20 — and coach Matt Painter wants to see a different team..

"We've got to finish more plays. We can't have seven turnovers in the first half, but defensively we have to be better," he said. "We have to compete and do a better job there, and I've got to do a better job because when we win, we win together. When we lose, we lose together. But we've got to get it figured out quick."

Or it could happen again.

Former Giants coach Brian Daboll agrees to become Titans offensive coordinator

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Former New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll is an offensive coordinator again as part of new Tennessee Titans coach Robert Saleh's staff.

The Titans announced the hire of Daboll on Tuesday. The move brings two former New York head coaches together, as Daboll was with the Giants at the same time Saleh was leading the Jets.

Daboll went 20-40-1 with the Giants andwas firedNov. 10, the day after a24-20 lossto the Chicago Bears that dropped their record to 2-8. Daboll led New York to a playoff berth and was the AP NFL's Coach of the Year his debut season in 2022, but the Giants went 11-33 the rest of his tenure.

He had interviewed a second time for theLas Vegas Raiders'head coaching vacancy on Monday.

Daboll, 50, has previously been an offensive coordinator with the Cleveland Browns (2009-10), Miami Dolphins (2011),Kansas City Chiefs(2012) and Buffalo Bills (2018-21). He also was the University of Alabama's offensive coordinator in 2017.

He was a part of five Super Bowl championships while working on Bill Belichick's New England Patriots staffs from 2000-06 and 2013-16. Daboll also was part of Alabama's 2017 national championship team.

Daboll is the first coach to receive both the AP NFL Coach of the Year Award and the AP NFL Assistant Coach of the Year Award. He won the assistant coach award with Buffalo in 2020.

The Titans signedSalehto a five-year contract last week to take over a Titans team that is coming off back-to-back 3-14 seasons. Saleh was San Francisco's defensive coordinator this past season after going 20-36 as the New York Jets' head coach from 2021-24.

Cavs forward Evan Mobley sidelined with left calf strain, will be reevaluated in 1-3 weeks

Cavs forward Evan Mobley sidelined with left calf strain, will be reevaluated in 1-3 weeks

After a 114-98win over the Orlando Magic on Monday, Cleveland Cavaliers forward Evan Mobley has been diagnosed with a left calf strain that will be reevaluated in 1-3 weeks, according to senior NBA insider Chris Haynes.

Cleveland Cavaliers forward Evan Mobley sustained a left calf strain and will be re-evaluated in 1-3 weeks.

— Chris Haynes (@ChrisBHaynes)January 27, 2026

Mobley finished the game with 20 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks in 35 minutes. It was the Cavs' fourth consecutive victory and their sixth in the last seven games. Now, Cleveland must navigate through a crucial stretch without their young All-Star and reigning Defensive Player of the Year.

On Monday night, along with the team's 28th win of the season, Mobley also entered the Cavs record books. Mobley blocked the 500th shot of his career, becoming only the fifth player in Cavaliers history to reach that milestone. He also became the youngest player to reach that number in franchise history.

Former Cavs center Zydrunas Ilgauskas holds the franchise record with 1,269 blocks during his 12 seasons in Cleveland. Mobley reached 500 in blocks in less than five full NBA seasons. His career average for blocks per game already equals Ilgauskas' at 1.6. Barring multiple lengthy stints on the injured list, that record will likely belong to Mobley should he remain in Cleveland for the majority of his career.

The Cavs are currently sitting in fifth place in the Eastern Conference, which is much different than the team's experience last season. Last season, the Cavs were near the top of the conference for much of the year, finishing 64-18 and capturing the No. 1 seed in the east. We're just past the halfway point this season (in terms of games played), andCleveland (28-20) already has more losses than all of last year.

So, even a couple of weeks without one of their best players and best defender could prove detrimental to their playoff hopes. In 42 games this season, Mobley is averaging 17.9 points, 8.8 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocks per game.

No. 3 Michigan rallies in thriller to deliver No. 5 Nebraska its first loss of the season after 20-0 start

January 27, 2026
No. 3 Michigan rallies in thriller to deliver No. 5 Nebraska its first loss of the season after 20-0 start

Nebraska is unbeaten no more.

The No. 5 Cornhuskers went into Michigan and controlled most of Tuesday's matchup against the third-ranked Wolverines. But Michigan kept things close in the face of hot early 3-point shooting and rallied fora 75-72 win.

Nebraska got two looks at a game-tying 3-pointer in the game's final seconds. But both missed the mark, allowing Michigan to escape with the win.

Nebraska led for most of the game

Michigan took a 3-2 lead and didn't lead again until a 9-2 run secured a 74-72 advantage with 1:04 remaining. From there, the Wolverines didn't relinquish the lead and handed Nebraska its first loss of the season following a 20-0 start that was the best in program history.

With the Cornhuskers' loss, only two unbeaten teams remain in the top 25.No. 1 Arizona held off a late rallyfrom No. 13 BYU on Tuesday to improve to 20-0. No. 24 Miami (Ohio) was also 20-0 ahead of a late Tuesday matchup against UMass.

Nebraska (20-1) now joins Michigan (19-1) among the ranks of the one-loss teams.

Nimari Burnett and Michigan rallied to hand Nebraska its first loss of the season.

Nebraska couldn't maintain scorching start from 3

The matchup was the toughest test yet for a Nebraska team that was unranked in the preseason and didn't join the AP Top 25 until a 9-0 start forced voters to take notice in the sixth poll of the season. Until the final minutes Tuesday, the Cornhuskers looked up to the task, despite playing without starting center Reink Mast, who was a late scratch due to an illness.

Nebraska shot 10-of-19 from 3 in the first half and went into halftime with a 50-48 lead despite Michigan's 66% shooting effort from the field. Nebraska countered with a 59% halftime field-goal rate buoyed by its hot 3-point shooting.

Nebraska extended that lead to 64-56 midway through the second half as Michigan's hot shooting went cold. But ultimately, Nebraska's 3-point shooting betrayed it. After a 52.6% effort in the first half, the Cornhuskers shot 1-of-13 in the second to finish with an 11-of-32 (34.4%) effort.

Michigan, meanwhile, climbed back at the free-throw line, where it enjoyed a tremendous advantage while shooting 19-of-23 (83%). Nebraska attempted just four free throws the entire game, hitting three.

Michigan survived late looks by Nebraska

With the game on the line, Nebraska went back to the 3-point shot in the game's final seconds. But Jamarques Lawrence missed an open look from the top of the key with 4.3 seconds remaining. And Sam Hoiberg missed a contested shot from the corner as time expired.

In the end, Michigan overcame an 11-point first-half deficit and a 6-of-26 (23.1%) shooting night from 3. A 27-point second half was enough to secure the comeback as Michigan limited Nebraska to 22 second-half points.

Sophomore forward Morez Johnson Jr. led the Michigan effort with 17 points and 12 rebounds as the Wolverines avoided their second loss of the season after losing to unranked Wisconsin at home on Jan. 10. Up next is a date with rival and No. 7 Michigan State at home on Friday (8 p.m. ET, Fox).

Nebraska got 20 points each from Lawrence and Pryce Sandfort. But without Mast, it was outmanned on the boards as Michigan secured a 35-23 rebounding advantage. Up next for the Huskers is another tough test against No. 9 Illinois (4 p.m. ET, FS1) at home on Sunday.

Houston's Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa to miss World Baseball Classic due to insurance issues

Houston's Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa to miss World Baseball Classic due to insurance issues

HOUSTON (AP) — Houston's Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa won't play in the World Baseball Classic after both failed to get insurance on their contracts for the tournament.

The Athletic reported Tuesday that both players will miss the event, which runs from March 5-17, because they couldn't get insurance to protect their contracts in the event of injuries.

Correa, who will make $31 million this season, was expected to play for Puerto Rico and Altuve, who will make $33 million in 2026, was hoping to suit up for Venezuela.

"That's too big of a risk to take, to play with no insurance," Correa told The Athletic. "I'm definitely upset because I've been preparing really hard this offseason to get better this year and be ready early so I can be ready for the WBC."

Correa said he made the decision after having a talk with Astros owner Jim Crane after learning he could not get insurance on his contract.

"Jim called me and told me that he wants me to focus on the team and spring training. Obviously, he traded for me to win a championship here, and we had too many injuries as a team (last season)," Correa said.

Correa returned to Houston ina blockbuster tradeat last year's deadline after spending more than three seasons with the Twins.

The 35-year-old Altuve sat out the first two months of the 2023 season afterfracturing his right thumbin the last World Baseball Classic.
