I built my tiny home on my own in just 3 years – it cost $80k but a detail could have helped built it for much cheaper | XY04MJ2 | 2024-04-27 17:08:01
A REDDIT user explained how he built a two-story tiny home on wheels for just $80,000 without any prior construction experience.
Going by the name Tahko Bell, the Reddit user broke down the three-year-long home-building process.

He posted photos of the home in the r/tinyhouses subreddit, showing off the modern and sleek design.
Once he and his wife decided they would build a tiny home instead of buying one, they started researching the process.
"I sat down with a Word doc and asked all the questions my wife and I could think of related to the process, everything from zoning to intimacy in a tiny house (100+ questions in that initial session)." he wrote.
"Then I answered as many as I could through free resources, google, blogs, etc. As I studied, I got more questions added to the Word doc and tracked resources."
He eventually met up with a local resident who owned a tiny house and got some real-life advice about things like permitting and building codes.
After that, he contacted the state agency to ensure he had all the necessary permits and would meet all the codes.
"Blueprints in hand, I walk into the state and get them reviewed before I nail a single board; once they are stamped and approved, I build like a madman until the inspections," he said.
The materials cost $80,000, but he admitted that he might have spent less if he had more experience.
"I felt like if I was more experienced I could have built it for much cheaper, but this was my first build," he wrote.
"I feel like it was death by a thousand cuts, overbuying constantly. But still happy with buying quality materials."

The home was built on a trailer, so the couple doesn't have to be tied down in one place.
A spacious kitchen on the first floor has a deep sink, dishwasher, and full-sized fridge.
They maximized countertop space by hiding the stovetop beneath it in a drawer that slides out when it's time to cook.
There is a comfy couch and sitting area next to the kitchen, and a staircase leads to the bedroom.
Because the ceiling is so low in the bedroom, they have to crouch or crawl to get to the bed.
The bathroom is on the first floor. It features a large shower that doubles as a wide, shallow soaking tub.
"There is an 11″ high stone lip that comes up, making it a massive shallow bathtub for laying down and soaking," he explained.
"We've got two overflow valves in there, too, to prevent flooding. Pictures can't do that shower justice."
