A COLLECTOR recently bought an unusual pin, which they shared online to judge its value.

The pin was made from an old coin, which social media told them could have been worth significant cash.

The Redditor's collection included a German Thaler coin

The buyer took to the r/coins subreddit to check if the coin was worth anything.

They had a collection of four coins, two of which had been turned into pins.

One in particular caught commenters' eyes.

Referring to the soldered-on needles, the buyer asked, "How much does this impact the value?"

PAINFUL PIN

"A ton," one commenter answered. "They're now damaged."

One of the coins that had been turned into a pin appeared to be a 1619 Thaler coin from Germany.

This coin is significant due to its age and historic nature.

Depending on its official grade, it could be worth hundreds.

A VF rating from Numismatic Guaranty Company could place the coin's value around $350.

An XF rating would make it worth up to $900.

Other Redditors agreed that the coins are now worth less.

"The solder blobs will reduce the value by like 80%, even if removed as carefully as possible," a commenter added.

Another said the value on the Thaler would be impacted "quite a bit."

It's unclear whether the pin's owner planned on selling it or getting it valued.

"This was a great idea according to grandmas all over the world," the owner said.

COIN CRAZE

While turning rare coins into a wearable accessory might harm its value, other coins are still worth big bucks.

A manufacturing error on one penny can sell for up to $75,000.

In 1944, a batch of pennies was mistakenly made with steel instead of copper.

The result is now an expensive collectors' item.

Dollar bills can also be worth extra money.

An unusual dollar with a black serial number could sell for as much as $80.

Some wearables are worth money — like this $19,000 brooch found at a thrift store.
