Lorde, 28, sat down withZane Lowe for an interview with Apple Musicto talk listeners through the creative process and inspiration behind the project prior to its release. The "What Was That" singer opened up about a unique moment she shared with Harlow, 27. "Jack Harlow was working at Electric Lady when we were there towards the end of the record and somehow ended up getting most of the album played to him. It was a very funny cool link," Lorde said of putting the final touches onVirginat Electric Lady Studios in New York City. The "Solar Power" singer elaborated, "He's such a sweetheart. He was like, 'Your bars – these are bars.' I was like, 'Your words, not mine.' " Universal Music Group She then reflected on the uniquely physical performance element she sought to bring to the upcoming album. "There just is this sort of like rolling cadence and physicality. Within that, I'm trying to make myself laugh, I'm trying to make my eyebrow raise, I'm trying to kind of, I don't know, just keep it feeling super alive," she said. Virgin, Lorde's fourth studio album, will in part examine the singer's gender identity journey. Lorde previously recounted a conversation about her gender with fellow pop starChappell Roanin an interview withRolling Stone. "She was like, 'So, are you nonbinary now?' And I was like, 'I'm a woman except for the days when I'm a man.' I know that's not a very satisfying answer, but there's a part of me that is really resistant to boxing it up," she said to the Grammy-winning "Pink Pony Club" artist.
