MANILA, Philippines (AP) — A tropical storm was blowing across the Philippines' mountainous north Friday, worsening more than a week of bad weather that has caused at least 25 deaths and prompted evacuations in villages hit by flooding and landslides. The storm was Typhoon Co-may when it blew Thursday night into the town of Agno in Pangasinan province with maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers (74 miles) per hour and gusts of up to 165 kph (102 mph). It was weakening as it advanced northeastward and had sustained winds of 85 kph (53 mph) Friday afternoon. Co-may was intensifying seasonal monsoon rains that had swamped a large swath of the country for more than a week. Disaster-response officials have received reports of at least 25 deaths since last weekend, mostly due to flash floods, toppled trees, landslides and electrocution. Eight other people were reported missing, they said. There were no immediate reports of deaths or injuries directly caused by Co-may, locally called Emong, the fifth weather disturbance to hit the Philippines since the rainy season started in last month. More than a dozen more tropical storms were expected to batter the Southeast Asian country the rest of the year, forecasters said. The government shut down schools in metropolitan Manila for the third day Friday and suspended classes in 35 provinces in the main northern region of Luzon. More than 80 towns and cities, mostly in Luzon, have declared a state of calamity, a designation that speeds emergency funds and freezes the prices of commodities, including rice. The days of stormy weather have forced 278,000 people to leave their homes for safety in emergency shelters or relatives' homes. Nearly 3,000 houses have been damaged, the government's disaster response agency said. Travel by sea and air has been restricted in northern provinces being pounded or in the typhoon's path. Thousands of army forces, police, coast guard personnel. firefighters and civilian volunteers have been deployed to help rescue people in villages swamped in floodwaters or isolated due to roads blocked by landslides, fallen trees and boulders. The United States said it will provide $250,000 in funding to the U.N. World Food Programme to help the Philippine government's response. "We are tracking the devastation caused by the storms and floods and are deeply concerned for all those affected," U.S. Ambassador MaryKay Carlson said. After returning from his White House meeting with U.S.President Donald Trump, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. visited emergency shelters Thursday in Rizal province to help distribute food packs to displaced residents. He later convened an emergency meeting with disaster-response officials, where he underscored the need for the government and the people to adapt to and brace for climate change and the larger number of and more unpredictable natural calamities it's setting off. "Everything has changed," Marcos said. "Let's not say, `The storm may come, what will happen?' because the storm will really come." The United States, Manila'slongtime treaty ally, has pledged to provide military aircraft to airlift food and other aid to remote island provinces and the countryside if the calamity worsens, the Philippines military said. The Philippines, which lies between the Pacific Ocean and the South China Seas, is battered byabout 20 typhoons and stormseach year. It's often hit by earthquakes and has about two dozen active volcanoes, making it one of the world's most disaster-prone countries.

Militant George Abdallah arrives in Lebanon after more than 40 years in French detentionNew Foto - Militant George Abdallah arrives in Lebanon after more than 40 years in French detention

BEIRUT (AP) — A Lebanese pro-Palestinian communist militant arrived in Lebanon Friday following his release after more than 40 years in detention in France. Georges Ibrahim Abdallah, 74, was serving a life sentence for complicity in the murders of two diplomats, one American and one Israeli, in Paris in 1982. The Paris Court of Appeal ruled last week that Abdallah, who has been imprisoned in France since his arrest in 1984, could be released on the condition that he leave the country and never return. Abdallah was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1987 for complicity in the assassinations of U.S. Army Lt. Col. Charles Ray, who was stationed in Paris as an assistant military attaché, and Israeli diplomat Yacov Barsimantov. He became eligible for parole in 1999 but multiple requests he filed since then were denied. In Lebanon, many saw Abdallah as a political prisoner. While there was no official event marking his return, a crowd of supporters, including a number of members of Parliament, gathered outside of the Beirut airport to wait for him. Some banged on drums and held up Palestinian and Lebanese Communist Party flags and a banner reading, "George Abdallah is free — a Lebanese, Palestinian and international freedom fighter on the road to liberating Palestine." The crowd broke out in cheers upon hearing the plane carrying Abdallah had arrived.

Teddi Mellencamp says she is 'taking a little break' from immunotherapy amid stage 4 cancer treatmentNew Foto - Teddi Mellencamp says she is 'taking a little break' from immunotherapy amid stage 4 cancer treatment

Phillip Faraone/Getty Teddi Mellencamp is updating fans on the latest change in her stage 4 cancer journey. "Essentially, I haven't been feeling good for about a month," the TV star and daughter of musicianJohn Mellencampsaid during her latestepisodeofTwo Ts in a Pod, "which was kind of shocking to me, and I think, mentally did a lot to me, because I was like, 'What do you mean? I felt so good right after the surgeries, and then when I was having radiation and immunotherapy, I was feeling good, so why am I not able to do this right now? Why do I feel like I can barely open my eyes and keep my words straight?'" She said that, because of the way she was feeling, she got an "emergency appointment" with her doctors to look into the root cause, and they learned that "the longer that I'm on immunotherapy, the sicker it is making me." Teddi continued, "So what the doctors have decided to do for me, because this immunotherapy has hit me so incredibly hard, they did a bunch of scans and everything is looking good, everything is shrinking...but it is showing that why I medically feel so sick is from the immunotherapy, so we are going to take a little break on the immunotherapy to get my body back feeling stronger." In the meantime, Teddi shared her doctors still have her on steroids and "we're doing everything we can to get me back to feeling like I can do this, I can do all the things." She added that the revelation was a major development in her cancer journey. "The hardest thing for me has been kind of the wake-up call, 'Wow, I can't do what I did yesterday,' or, 'Wow, I can't do what I did three weeks ago,'" she said. This latest update comes after Teddi shared in June onTwo Ts in a Podthather immunotherapy treatmentshad been so successful in beating back the growth of her tumors and that there were no plans to cease them. "It's stage 4 until it's gone, until I'm in remission," she said, indicating that her doctors planned for her to stay on immunotherapy for at least two more years. Since 2022, Teddi has been dealing with melanoma off and on, but in February she got the news that she had stage 4 melanoma, and it metastasized to her brain and lungs. At one point, Teddi revealed she was given50/50 odds of survival, but in April, she excitedly shared thather brain tumors"have significantly shrunk, which doctors believe means that this all will work, and I will be back to myself and feeling good." Teddi was a cast member on Bravo'sThe Real Housewives of Beverly Hillsfrom seasons 8-10 between 2017 and 2020, and later returned as a guest on seasons 11, 12, and 13. Anthony Mackie appeared on "The Tonight Show" to promote "Twisted Metal" Season 2, but the interview started with host Jimmy Fallon congratulating Mackie on his recent Emmy nomination for guest actor in a comedy series thanks to his performance in Seth Rogen's Apple TV+ series "The Studio." Mackie was on a set the morning of the Emmys announcement and automatically assumed his white co-stars landed noms over him, per usual. "I'm on set… and I look over and everybody's like 'Congratulations!' And I was like, 'Oh, what white dude got nominated?'" Mackie said. "Because I'm the white dude legend when it comes to nominations and wins. I made Ryan Gosling famous. I made Jeremy Renner famous. I made Bryan Cranston famous. I now made Ron Howard famous! I'm like, if you want to get nominated, I'm the dude. You know what I mean?" More from Variety Oscars Submissions Site Opens With New Producer Sign-Off Requirement Variety's Awards Circuit Podcast Roundtable Dissects the Emmy Nominations - Including This Year's Biggest Shockers 'The Late Show With Stephen Colbert' Has Never Won an Emmy - That Could Finally Change After CBS Canceled It Mackie was referring to his long history of being snubbed by awards voters while his white co-stars land nominations instead. Mackie was Ryan Gosling's co-star in 2006's "Half Nelson," which earned Gosling an Oscar nomination for best actor. He starred alongside Jeremy Renner in 2008's "The Hurt Locker," which won best picture and earned Renner a best actor Oscar nom. Mackie played Martin Luther King Jr. to Bryan Cranston's Lyndon B. Johnson in the HBO movie "All the Way," for which Cranston was an Emmy nominee. And now Mackie appeared with Ron Howard in "The Studio." Only this time it wasn't just Howard who got an Emmy nomination but Mackie, too. In various interviews over the years, Mackie has spoken publicly about his disappointment with awards bodies for overlooking his work. He told Esquire earlier this year on the "Captain America: Brave New World" publicity tour: "I know I've done at least four performances that could have been nominated — if not for a Golden Globe, then an Oscar or an Emmy. Captain America is my Oscar, because I've been overlooked so many times in my career." Speaking toMen's Healthin 2020, Mackie said he "put everything" into "The Hurt Locker" and had to stop acting for a bit when the Oscars snubbed him for supporting actor. "That little fucker matters," Mackie said at the time about the Oscar. "We try to protect ourselves and say, 'I'm doing the work for the work.' But when that happened with 'Hurt Locker,' it hurt. I had to take a year off of work." Mackie is one of four guest actors nominated for "The Studio." The others are Ron Howard, Bryan Cranston and Dave Franco. The Apple TV+ series earned a huge 23 nominations this year, making it the most-nominated freshman comedy in history. It's also now tied for most nominations for a single season of a comedy series.
