Quinta Brunson teases "Abbott Elementary" will be filming at a live event in season 5: 'Philly sports fans will be happy'

Disney/Gilles Mingasson Ain't no sports fan like a Philly sports fan — andAbbott Elementaryis looking to highlight that. TheAbbott Elementarycast took the stage at San DiegoComic-Conon Saturday to reminisce about season 4 episode "Karaoke" and look ahead to season 5, coming toABCin October. When asked about potential guest stars for the new season, creator and starQuinta Brunsondidn't name names — but she did hint at an exciting development celebrating Abbott's hometown. "You can expect us to be filming at a live event," she teased. "You can do with that information what you will because I can't give you more information." ABC/Gilles Mingasson "But I do think that Philly sports fans will be very happy," Brunson added, before amending, "Sports fans in general." Janelle James, who plays Principal Ava Coleman on the series, jokingly told the crowd that the scene would be at "Little League Soccer." Abbott Elementaryis no stranger to Philadelphia sports tie-ins. Philadelphia Flyers mascot Gritty guest-starred in the season 2 premiere, while Philadelphia Eagles players Jalen Hurts, Jason Kelce, and Brandon Graham guest-starred on theseason 3 premiereas part of Abbott's career day. Will the Eagles return to the show, or might it be time for the Phillies or the Sixers to get a moment in the spotlight on the series that has nothing but love for its hometown heroes? Abbotthas a history of teasing exciting developments for the show at Comic-Con. Last year, Brunson announced thatan epic crossoverwould be part of season 4. That turned out to be with FX'sIt's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and whilethe ABC series aired their episode back in January, the FX show only debuted their own episode with theAbbott Elementarycast this summer. Brunson recently sent the internet into a spiral when she noted thatmembers of her cast will eventually want to move onto other projects. "We are so fortunate and blessed to be on a network TV show for five seasons, and for people to still be fans," Brunson toldBustlein an interview. "That being said, I have cast members who would love to pursue other projects, and our show is very time-consuming. We shoot about seven months out of the year. That can stop people from being able to do a lot of other things." But Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich addressed those remarks while celebrating the show's six 2025 Emmy nominations. "I think those comments were misconstrued," he toldDeadline."She remains incredibly dedicated to the show. And I think you can tell that from just watching the episodes." Bob Odenkirk compares Stephen Colbert to Conan O'Brien after" Late Show "cancellation: 'We're gonna see lots more'

Bob Odenkirkdoesn't thinkStephen Colbertis going anywhere. TheBetter Call Saulstar, who guested onThe Late Shownumerous times since theColbert Reporthost took over the show in 2015, shares his response to the news ofthe talk show's cancellationwhile promotingNobody 2atEntertainment Weekly's San Diego Comic-Con video studio. "I can't make out the political side of this versus the economic side of it," Odenkirk says of theLate Show's cancellation, which CBS explained as "purely a financial decision," but has since raised questions given its potential connection to Colbert's criticism of President Trump and themerger of Paramount and Skydance. "I do know that viewing patterns have shifted." Odenkirk believes that Colbert will persist after the show concludes in 2026. "Here's the one thing I'm not remotely concerned about: not having Stephen Colbert do excellent work for the rest of his life as long as he wants to," he says. "Whether it's on a different platform, or for CBS under a different banner, or his own company." Odenkirk believes that Colbert's post-Late Showtrajectory will mirror that ofConan O'Brien, whom theBetter Call Saulstar worked with in theSaturday Night Livewriters' room before writing for his own show,Late Night With Conan O'Brien. "It's not gonna be unlike Conan O'Brien, who you can see every day, all you want," Odenkirk says. "He's gonna make stuff, 'cause Stephen is a creator, and a genius, and his voice is pure and wonderful." Amanda Edwards/Getty O'Brien, of course, launched his own TBS talk show after leavingThe Tonight Show, and began a successful podcast after departing late-night altogether. He also stars in his Emmy-winning travel show,Conan O'Brien Must Go, for HBO Max. Casting doubt on the viability of the late-night genre in general, Odenkirk continues, "Maybe that format has kind of run its time? And also, by the way, one less person doing that will maybe help some of the other shows be stronger. But I know Stephen — we're gonna see lots more of Stephen." The Late Show's cancellation drew significant criticism from the late-night community.Jon Stewart, whose tenure atThe Daily Showsaw Colbert rise to prominence as a correspondent, slammed CBS' decisionand suggested that the show's cancellation was an attempt to appease President Trump. Scott Kowalchyk/CBS/Getty "If you believe as corporations or as networks, you can make yourselves so innocuous, that you can serve a gruel so flavorless, that you will never again be on the boy king's radar: (a) why will anyone watch you?" he said onThe Daily Show. "And — you are f---ing wrong." Sign up forEntertainment Weekly'sfree daily newsletterto get breaking TV news, exclusive first looks, recaps, reviews, interviews with your favorite stars, and more. David Letterman, who served asThe Late Show's original host from 1993 to 2015,shared similar sentiments. "There's no fairness to these goons," he said of Skydance's leaders onThe Barbara Gaines Show. "These guys are bottom feeders. That's exactly what this is. Of course, they know that broadcast television is withering. They just want to make sure that, on top of buying something that doesn't have the same value as it had 30 years ago, they don't want to be hassled by the United States government. So they want CBS to take care of all of that mess." Jimmy Kimmelalsocriticized the networkin an Instagram post. "Love you Stephen," he wrote. "F--- you and all your Sheldons CBS." Cambodia and Thailand agree to ceasefire talks after days of cross-border fightingNew Foto - Cambodia and Thailand agree to ceasefire talks after days of cross-border fighting

A second day of border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia is prompting evacuations and raising tensions in Southeast Asia. CNN's Kristie Lu Stout has the latest. The leaders of Cambodia and Thailand have agreed to meet for ceasefire talks after days of cross-border violence, according to statements on Saturday from both sides as well as US President Donald Trump. Trump said earlier in the weekend that he had spoken with both Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and acting prime minister of Thailand Phumtham Wechayachai in his efforts to restore peace. "They have agreed to immediately meet and quickly work out a Ceasefire and, ultimately, PEACE!" Trump wrote on Truth Social in a series of posts on outlining his diplomatic efforts on Saturday. Trump said he had warned Hun Manet and Phumtham that he would not make trade deals with either country if the deadly border conflict continued. "They are also looking to get back to the "Trading Table" with the United States, which we think is inappropriate to do until such time as the fighting STOPS," Trump wrote. Earlier this month, Trump wrote letters to Thailand and Cambodia threatening a 36% tariff on most of their exports to the US, starting August 1. Cambodia and Thailand both delivered substantial offers to their US counterparts in an effort to move to the front of the line for a trade agreement, officials said at the time. In the early hours of Sunday morning local time, Hun Manet thanked Trump and said that Cambodia agreed with "the proposal for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire between the two armed forces." It added that he had previously called for a ceasefire to ASEAN chair and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. A statement from Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs was more measured, saying it wished to see "sincere intention from the Cambodian side" – but that Phumtham had also "requested President Trump to convey …that Thailand wants to convene a bilateral dialogue as soon as possible to bring forth measures and procedures for the ceasefire and the eventual peaceful resolution of the conflict." Bangkok and Phnom Penh have been fighting over territory disputed since colonial power France drew the border between them more than a century ago. The reneweddeadly conflictpits longtime US ally Thailand, with decades of experience, against Cambodia's relatively young armed force with close ties to China. Since fighting broke out on Thursday, more than a dozen people have been reported killed, dozens wounded, and more than 150,000 civilians evacuated. Clashes have continued into Saturday, according to officials on both sides. The United Nations has condemned the violence, with Secretary General António Guterres offering his assistance "in any efforts towards a peaceful resolution of the dispute" in a statement released Saturday by his spokesperson. NEW YORK CITY −Wildfire smoke wafted from Canadato create unhealthy air quality levels across the Northeast on July 26. State officials fromMaine to New Yorkissued alerts forfine particulate matter, a toxic byproduct of wildfires that is small enough to be inhaled. Smoky conditions impacted cities includingBostonand New York. Canada's fires could produce more smoke blowing into the Northeast through the afternoon, said Brooke Taber, a National Weather Service meteorologist stationed in Burlington, Vermont. Smoke is also causing limited visibility in some areas. Wind changes could provide a respite by the night, Taber said. Montreal had some of the worst air quality in the world due to fires in the Canadian Prairies, theCanadian Press reported, citingIQAir, a Swiss-based monitoring company. Several wildfires burning in Saskatchewan and Manitoba are sending large smoke plumes eastward, according to Quebec'sfire provincial agency. Meanwhile, New York City climbed on IQAir's list of cities with unhealthy air levels. Hazy skies and the faint smell of smoke blanketed Manhattan on Saturday. Officials urged people tostay indoors to reduce exposure, and to limit strenuous activity. Exposure can cause short-term effects such as irritation of the eyes, nose and throat, along with coughing, sneezing, runny nose and shortness of breath. It can be particularly dangerous for people in sensitive groups, such as children, older people and those with chronic health conditions, such as asthma or heart disease. Suspect in University of New Mexico dorm shooting makes 1st court appearanceNew Foto - Suspect in University of New Mexico dorm shooting makes 1st court appearance

A shooting inside a dorm room at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque early Friday morning left a 14-year-old boy dead and another teen wounded, state police said. The suspect in the shooting, identified by police as 18-year-old John Fuentes, was taken into custody hours after the shooting during a traffic stop in Los Lunas, New Mexico, about 25 miles south of Albuquerque, New Mexico State Police said during a news conference Friday evening. Fuentes was booked on one count of first-degree murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault and tampering with evidence. Fuentes made his first court appearance in Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court on Saturday morning via Zoom. Fuentes will remain in custody and will be held without bond while his case is pending transfer to the New Mexico District Court. He will be back in court next week. According to court documents, Fuentes allegedly drove to the UNM campus at around 8 p.m. local time Thursday in a vehicle registered to his father. Fuentes met up with three other people, one of them being a freshman at UNM, and walked inside the Gila Dorm. The four were allegedly playing video games in a dorm room when the incident occurred, according to court documents. "At some point, for reasons still being investigated, the suspect began shooting a firearm at the other occupants in the room. The 14-year-old victim was fatally shot while the other occupants, along with the suspect, fled from the room," state police said in a statement Saturday. MORE: Officer dies after gunman opens fire in 'ambush attack' in Ohio: Police The other person who was wounded in the shooting is 19, according to police, and had injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening, the university said earlier. One of the victims believed Fuentes was on drugs when he shot the 14-year-old victim in the head, killing him, according to court documents. Fuentes allegedly threatened the other two people in the room, shooting one of them in the head as well. Those two were able to escape through a dorm window to seek aid. Fuentes fled the dorm room and ended up on the first-story roof of the Mesa Vista building, where police say he allegedly smashed multiple windows, injuring himself. University of New Mexico Police officers responded to an alarm call at the dorm at around 1:30 a.m. local time Friday. Upon arrival, officers found broken windows and blood, according to New Mexico State Police. University police then received more calls reporting gunshots and another one from a hospital that a 19-year-old male came in with a gunshot wound and said he had been shot at UNM campus, according to state police. While conducting a sweep of the surrounding buildings, officers found the 14-year-old dead, state police said. Police said Fuentes left blood stains, a stolen Glock 9 mm handgun, keys and a pair of jeans on the roof he escaped to. He also left a trail of blood stains as he traveled across campus before being picked up by two individuals in a pickup truck at around 1:40 a.m. Friday morning. Eventually, authorities said they arrested Fuentes in Los Lunas at around 2:30 p.m. local time Friday on Highway 314. The university initially issued a shelter-in-place, which lasted much of the day. By Friday afternoon local time, the university said there was "still an active crime scene" in the central part of the campus, but that the shelter-in-place order had been lifted. The central campus remained closed, the university said. MORE: 21-year-old charged in murder of Bay Area woman walking dogs New Mexico State Rep. Marianna Anaya said new student orientation was underway this week. "Waking this morning to the news of this act of violence has shaken the entire UNM community," she said in a statement. "It is especially heartbreaking that this occurred during the time of a new student orientation -- a time when students and their families should be filled with hope, excitement, and a sense of possibility." She added, "This heartbreaking incident is yet another reminder of the urgent need to address gun violence and historical trauma in our state."
