Belarus keeps up crackdown on dissent even as authorities free some prisoners, rights group saysNew Foto - Belarus keeps up crackdown on dissent even as authorities free some prisoners, rights group says

TALLINN, Estonia (AP) — Authorities in Belarus continue their unrelenting crackdown on dissent even as they release some prisoners, the country's leading rights group told The Associated Press on Tuesday. Last month, the Belarusian government pardoned and released 14 prisoners, but at least 60 more people were arrested on politically motivated charges, said Pavel Sapelka, a rights advocate with the Viasna human rights center. In May, the center counted more than 100 politically driven arrests, Sapelka said. "The steamroller of repressions doesn't stop, and the authorities continue to stifle any dissent in Belarus, opening new high-profile cases," Sapelka told the AP on Tuesday. "No one, absolutely no one can feel safe in Belarus." Mass arrests and convictions of government critics in Belarus have continued since 2020, when Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko was handed a sixth term in office in an election that the opposition and the West denounced as rigged. Tens of thousands of people took to the streets in protest, in the biggest demonstrations that the country's ever seen. Authorities unleashed a violent crackdown in response, detaining and beating thousands and driving many more into exile abroad. The crackdown drew international condemnation, and the U.S. and the European Union imposed sanctions on Belarus. Viasna has recorded 1,174 people behind bars as political prisoners. The number includes 38 journalists and the group's founder, Ales Bialiatski, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2022. At least eight political prisoners have died behind bars. Lukashenko, who in January secured another term in office in another election the opposition denounced as a sham, has recently been pardoning some of the political prisoners, seeking to improve ties with the West. In total, he has pardoned and freed more than 300 prisoners since July 2024, including some U.S. citizens and other foreigners. Last month, Belarusian authoritiesreleased prominent opposition figure Siarhei Tsikhanouskiand 13 others and brought them to Lithuania. Their release came just hours after Belarusian authorities announced that Lukashenko met with U.S.President Donald Trump's envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, in the Belarusian capital, Minsk. But rights advocates argue that the situation in Belarus hasn't changed, and authorities have recently opened several new high-profile cases, which indicates their intention to continue the crackdown. At least 20 people have been arrested in the case againstBelaruski Hajun, a Belarusian activist group that monitors troops movements in Belarus, Sapelka said. Viasna on Monday also reported the arrest of popular Belarusian signer Aleh Hamenka, who is being accused of taking part in anti-government protests. Another case involves sociologists from the Wardomacki sociological research laboratory, according to Sapelka. Nils Muižnieks, U.N.'s special rapporteur for human rights in Belarus, has recently said that "there is no sign of improvement in the human rights situation in Belarus, and the authorities are disregarding offers of cooperation."

Kremlin denies U.S. claims that Russia is stalling in Ukraine peace talksNew Foto - Kremlin denies U.S. claims that Russia is stalling in Ukraine peace talks

MOSCOW (Reuters) -The Kremlin on Tuesday denied claims by U.S. President Donald Trump's special envoy for Ukraine that Russia was stalling in peace talks, adding that Moscow had fulfilled all the agreements reached so far in the negotiations. Trump's senior envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, said on Monday that "Russia cannot continue to stall for time while it bombs civilian targets in Ukraine." Asked about the remarks, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russia was grateful to Trump's team for helping to facilitate talks but that Moscow was not stalling the talks. "No one is delaying anything here," Peskov told reporters in Moscow. "We are naturally in favor of achieving the goals that we are trying to achieve through the special military operation via political and diplomatic means. Therefore, we are not interested in drawing out anything." Peskov noted that the dates of the third round of talks still needed to be agreed. Man accused of gathering information on Jews in Berlin for Iran arrested in Denmark, officials sayNew Foto - Man accused of gathering information on Jews in Berlin for Iran arrested in Denmark, officials say

BERLIN (AP) — A man suspected of gathering information on Jewish locations and individuals in Berlin for Iranian intelligence, possibly with a view to attacks, has been arrested in Denmark, German prosecutors said Tuesday. The Danish national, identified only as Ali S. in line with German privacy rules, was arrested on Thursday in the Danish city of Aarhus, federal prosecutors said in a statement. The man was tasked by an Iranian intelligence service early this year with gathering information on "Jewish localities and specific Jewish individuals" in Berlin, prosecutors said. They didn't elaborate. He spied on three properties in June, "presumably in preparation of further intelligence activities in Germany, possibly including terrorist attacks on Jewish targets," prosecutors said. German Justice Minister Stefanie Hubig said that "if this suspicion is confirmed, we are dealing with an outrageous operation," adding in a statement that "the protection of Jewish life has the highest priority for the German government." German security authorities stepped up protection for Jewish and Israeli facilities after a12-day warbroke out between Israel andIranin June. The suspect is accused of working for an intelligence service of a foreign power. The information leading to his arrest came from Germany's domestic intelligence service, prosecutors said. He will be brought before a judge in Germany to determine whether he's kept in custody pending formal charges after extradition from Denmark. It wasn't immediately clear when that will happen. Iranian Ambassador Majid Nili Ahmadabadi was summoned to the German Foreign Ministry after prosecutors announced the arrest. The Iranian Embassy in Berlin rejected what it called "unfounded and dangerous allegations" of an apparent plan for an attack on Jewish facilities. It said in an emailed statement that they "appear to be part of a deliberate campaign" to divert attention from "the recent aggression of the Israeli regime against Iranian territory" and the killing of Iranians. Germany is a staunch ally of Israel and has a history of tense relations with Tehran, though it has been one of the three leading European powers trying toengage Iran in diplomacyover its nuclear program. In October, Germanyordered the closureof all three Iranian Consulates in the country in response to the Iranian judiciary's announcement of the execution of Iranian German prisonerJamshid Sharmahd, who lived in the United States and was kidnapped in Dubai in 2020 by Iranian security forces. That left the Islamic Republic with only its embassy in Berlin.

Diddy trial updates: Jury in Sean Combs' sex-crimes case returns for deliberationsNew Foto - Diddy trial updates: Jury in Sean Combs' sex-crimes case returns for deliberations

After a nearly two-month run,Sean "Diddy" Combs'criminal trialinches closer to the end as the jury continues to deliberate on the hip-hop mogul'slegal fate. The 12-person group − made up of eight men and four women − will return to Manhattan court after deliberations began in the sweeping federal sex-crimes case on June 30. The five alternate jurors were told to remain on standby in case they're needed to fill in. Jurors, under the guidance of Judge Arun Subramanian, have been tasked with determining Combs' culpability in carrying out alleged crimes that span charges of sex trafficking, racketeering and transportation to engage in prostitution. In his instructions to the jury, Judge Subramanian, who called jurors "the sole and exclusive judges of the facts," emphasized that the group must decide the outcome of Combs' case solely on the evidence presented in trial, namely testimony from over 30 witnesses and various court exhibits detailing the alleged events involving Combs. "The rulings I have made during the trial are not any indication of my views of what your decision should be as to whether or not the guilt of the defendant has been proven beyond a reasonable doubt," said Subramanian, according to a copy of jury instructions obtained by USA TODAY. "You are to perform the duty of finding the facts without bias or prejudice as to any party." Combs, 55, wasarrested in Septemberfollowing a sex-trafficking investigation that included a raid of his homes by federal authorities, as well as a subsequent criminal indictment. He haspleaded not guiltyto the charges brought against him. Diddy on trial newsletter:Step inside the courtroom as music mogul faces sex-crimes charges. As jury deliberations continued into the afternoon on June 30, jurors sent a question to the judge about how they should assess thedrug distribution allegationagainst Combs. Subramanian will get an answer to the jurors this morning, as they had already adjourned for the day on Monday and returned to their homes. The jury asked Subramanian on June 30 for guidance about one juror who they warned may not be able to follow the judge's instructions about the law. Their note, which Subramanian read aloud in open court, read in part, "We have a juror, number 25, who we are concerned cannot follow your honor's instructions." Juror No. 25 described himself during jury selection on May 5 as a 51-year-old veterinarian who lives in Manhattan with his domestic partner, a freelance graphic designer. The note did not elaborate on which instructions the juror potentially cannot follow. After discussing the note with prosecutors and defense lawyers, Subramanian said he would send a note back to the jury reminding them of their obligations but take no further action for now. Discover WITNESS:Access our exclusive collection of true crime stories, podcasts, videos and more On June 30, Combs could be seen putting on glasses and looking directly at the jury box as they received instructions. He leaned back in his chair, legs crossed. Combs' family was seated in the front row, and his daughters could be seen whispering to each other. No, a verdict has not yet been reached in Combs' criminal case. After more than a month of harrowing testimony from several of Combs' associates, the prosecution rested its case on June 24. Meanwhile, Combs' lawyers rested their case in less than half an hour, with the defense opting not to call any witnesses to the stand. Closing arguments concluded June 27. Although the music mogul's alleged abuse is at the center of the trial, Combs told the court he would not be testifying. The disgraced music mogul is in custody, and despite repeated attempts at bail, has remainedconfined to the Special Housing Unit in Brooklyn'sMetropolitan Detention Center. He has been in jail since his arrest on Sept. 16, 2024. Combs is facing federal sex-crimes and trafficking charges in a sprawling case that has eroded his status as a power player and kingmaker in the entertainment industry. He was arrested inSeptember 2024and later charged with racketeering, sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution. The rapper has pleaded not guilty to the five counts against him. Racketeering is the participation in an illegal scheme under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Statute, or RICO, as a way for the U.S. government to prosecute organizations that contribute to criminal activity. Using RICO law, which is typically aimed attargeting multi-person criminal organizations, prosecutors allegethat Combs coerced victims, some of whom they say were sex workers, through intimidation and narcotics to participate in"freak offs"— sometimes dayslong sex performances that federal prosecutors allege they have on video. Kate Middleton & Charlotte Twin in Blue (and Prince William Stuns in Uniform) in New Palace PostNew Foto - Kate Middleton & Charlotte Twin in Blue (and Prince William Stuns in Uniform) in New Palace Post

Just when I thought May was a busy month for theBritish royal family, June came our way—and with it came a slew of major events and appearances forKate Middleton,Prince Williamand co. King Charles met with surprise Hollywood A-listers,Queen Camilla turned headsin a $2.5 million brooch andMeghan Markle made a huge career-related announcement. But Princess Catherine, 43, and her husband, Prince William, 43, had a jam-packed schedule for the royal books. Fortunately, if you couldn't keep track of it all, each month, the Prince and Princess of Wales share a royal rewind on theirjoint Instagram account. I'm talking birthdays, striking videosand eye-popping outfits. Here, highlights from Kate and Will's Instagram Stories featuring the Kensington Palace June Royal Rewind. Instagram / princeandprincessofwales As always, the first image was an intro slide announcing Kensington Palace's June Rewind. This was quickly followed by a slide featuring a super striking photo of the Prince of Wales in military fatigues. It was captioned, "Starting the month visiting the Army Air Corps." The slide referencedhis notable June 4th visit. Instagram / princeandprincessofwales Several slides later we got a look at Trooping the Colour, undoubtedly the biggest event for the family this month. Trooping the Colour is the annual military parade marking the official birthday of the British sovereign—and the royal family members always turn out in style. Princess Catherine caught my eyegiven her choice to wear a new coat dress by Catherine Walker—called the 'Bria'—in a bright electric blue hue. Many followers noted Princess Charlotte twinned with her mom at the event, but it wasCharlotte's jewelry that really turned heads. Kensington Palace also released a slideshow at the time, where Prince William can be seen donning his full uniform andwalking in slow-motion. Instagram / princeandprincessofwales Oh, and aBTS glimpse from the outingshowed the Wales Fam in a pic that felt more intimate somehow—and decidedly less staged. As PureWow's Senior Director of Special Projects and Royals,Rachel Bowie, noted at the time, "Don't get me wrong: There's posing involved, but the lighting is natural and there's no use of portrait mode. Instead, it feels like a shot snapped by someone passing by. It's giving the very relatable, 'Everyone is dressed up and we just need one shot where everyone is looking at the camera at the same time.' I say this knowing that of course on a day like Trooping the Colour, the Waleses haveloadsof professional photographers on hand to snap their pic. But this feels like a grabbed moment and an attempt to capture the day on their own terms." Then, of course, there was theiconic balcony moment. King Charles, Prince William andKate Middleton(not to mention, Queen Camilla,Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis) all stood in key positions—a reflection of the future of the monarchy—as they waved to the massive crowds below. Though it didn't get its own slide, following Trooping,Garter Daytook place at Windsor Castle (it's more formally known as the Order of the Garter service). For the occasion, fourroyals including Princess Catherine made thesame exact jewelry choice. And in terms of fashion, what did Princess Catherine and Duchess Sophie show up in? Effortlessly chic, monochromatic looks—and the timeless trend has never looked better. Andas if the Princess of Wales didn't get enough attention, she also wowed fans byswitching up her hair. View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Prince and Princess of Wales (@princeandprincessofwales) One moment not included in the slideshow but one I'd be remiss not to mention? Father's Day brought us the never-before-seen images above of Prince William and his three kids (andPrincess Charlotte's face said it all). Celebrity and commercial photographerJosh Shinnercaptured the sweet portraits. In the first pic, Prince William has his arms around Prince George and Princess Charlotte, who is in turn hugging her younger sibling, Prince Louis. The trio stands under a cherry blossom tree in coordinating sweaters and button downs. "Happy Father's Day, Papa (before & after!)," the photos were captioned at the time. "We love you! G, C & L." Instagram / princeandprincessofwales Perhaps my favorite post from the Waleses this month (which was also included in the Royal Rewind) was a birthday tribute to Prince William. The social media post included a bit of news (aka the debut of three of four new Cocker Spaniel puppies—all being cuddled by William—who their beloved dog,Orla, gave birth to last month, perThe Sun). The caption to the birthday pic read, "Happy birthday! Love C, G, C, L, Orla and the puppies!" A paw print emoji was included at the end. The Prince of Wales also previously stepped out in London on June 26 to attend the "Investing for Impact" event at The Guildhall, which brings togetherEarthshot Prizesuccess stories, sustainability leaders and potential investors focused on environmental solutions. View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Prince and Princess of Wales (@princeandprincessofwales) During the event, I foundthe prince's body languagevery telling. I noted of the outing, "He appears to be having the best time—genuine smiles a lot. Plus, he has a lot of open body language, indicating he's quite comfortable." Video and images from the event show Prince William positively glowing. And he also looked to be in his element as he delivered a heartfelt speech to attendees. Instagram / princeandprincessofwales Things wrapped up, as per usual, with a "thank you" slide. Here's hoping the Wales Fam gets some rest before what I'm sure will be an equally busy July! Ukrainian drone hits a plant deep inside Russia after record Russian drone attacks in JuneNew Foto - Ukrainian drone hits a plant deep inside Russia after record Russian drone attacks in June

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — A Ukrainian drone struck a Russian industrial plant some 1,300 kilometers (800 miles) from Ukraine, a local official said Tuesday, after Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy prioritized the weapon's development andRussia pounded Ukrainewith a monthly record of drones in June. Both sides in themore than three-year warfollowing Russia's February 2022 invasion of its neighbor haveraced to improve drone technologyand enhance their use on the battlefield. They have deployed increasingly sophisticated and deadlier drones, turning the war intoa testing groundfor the new weaponry. Ukraine is under severe strain from a Russian push at places on the roughly 1,000-kilometer (620-mile) front line, but analysts say its defenses are largely holding firm. Withrecent direct peace talksdelivering no progress on U.S.-led international efforts to halt the fighting, Russia and Ukraine are bulking up their arsenals. Russia last month launched 5,438 drones at Ukraine, a new monthly record, according to official data collated by The Associated Press. Ukraine is stepping up drone production Meanwhile, a Ukrainian drone hit an industrial plant in Izhevsk, about 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) east of Moscow, killing three people and injuring 35, Alexander Brechalov, head of the Udmurtia region, said. The plant's workers were evacuated, he said. The drone struck the Kupol Electromechanical Plant, which produces air defense systems and drones for the Russian military, according to an official with Ukraine's Security Service, the SBU. At least two direct hits were recorded on the plant's buildings, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly. Ukraine has for months been using domestically produced long-range drones to strike plants, storage sites and logistical hubsdeep inside Russian territory. In May last year, a Ukrainian drone hit an early-warning radar in the Russian city of Orsk, some 1,800 kilometers (1,120 miles) from the Ukrainian border, Kyiv officials claimed. Zelenskyy said Ukraine's domestic production of drones is about to increase in response to Russia's expanded barrages. "The priority is drones, interceptor drones and long-range strike drones," he said on Telegram late Monday. "This is extremely important," he added. "Russia is investing in its unmanned capabilities, Russia is planning to increase the number of drones used in strikes against our state. We are preparing our countermeasures." Russia's Defense Ministry said that 60 Ukrainian drones were downed overnight over several regions, including 17 over Crimea, 16 over the Rostov region and four over the Saratov region. At the same time, four Russian Shahed drones struck the southern Ukraine city of Zaporizhzia during the night, leaving more than 1,600 households without power, according to authorities. Ukraine's air force said Tuesday that Russia fired 52 Shahed and decoy drones at the country overnight. US envoy criticizes Russian attacks U.S.President Donald Trump's special envoy to Ukraine and Russia, retired Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg, rebuked Russia for continuing to strike civilian areas of Ukraine while effectively rejecting a ceasefire and dragging its feet on a peace settlement. "We urge an immediate ceasefire and a move to trilateral talks to end the war," Kellogg said on the social platform X late Monday. "Russia cannot continue to stall for time while it bombs civilian targets in Ukraine." Ukraine is developing its own defense industry as uncertainty remains over whether the Trump administration will continue to provide crucial military aid. Between March and April, the United States allocated no new aid to Ukraine, according to Germany's Kiel Institute, which tracks such support. Europe its support and for the first time since June 2022 surpassed the U.S. in total military aid, totaling 72 billion euros ($85 billion) compared with 65 billion euros ($77 billion) from the U.S., the institute said last month. ___ Follow AP's coverage of the war in Ukraine athttps://apnews.com/hub/russia-ukraine
