While Martin Short gets to check off his yearly nod for Hulu's"Only Murders in the Building,"his co-stars Steve Martin andSelena Gomezdidn't have the same luck. And"Paradise,"Hulu's post-apocalyptic thriller starring Sterling K. Brown and James Marsden, surprised with major drama category nods, likely pushing out previous nominees including "Yellowjackets,""Squid Game"and "The Handmaid's Tale." This year's Emmy Awards celebrate shows that aired or streamed between June 1, 2024, and May 31, 2025 (meaning those "The Bear" nominations are forlast year's third season, not thejust-dropped Season 4). The trio is missing two-thirds of its comedic power. Hulu's "Only Murders" has been an Emmy mainstay since its 2021 premiere, with each of its three leads − Martin Short, Steve Martin and Selena Gomez − grabbing at least one acting nomination over the four seasons that have streamed so far. But only Short has been nominated for all four of those seasons, and he's the only actor who made the cut this year. Almost universally acclaimed by critics, Disney+'s mature "Star Wars" series "Andor" got a well-deserved nomination for best drama series. But the show's star Diego Luna couldn't break into a crowded best drama actor category that included talented actors likePedro Pascal, Noah Wyle, Gary Oldman, Adam Scott and Sterling K. Brown. Luna's supremely talented "Andor" co-stars Stellan Skarsgård and Genevieve O'Reilly didn't make it into the supporting categories, either. Apparently there's only room for one British spy show in the hearts and minds of the Emmy voters. While Apple TV+'s delightful "Slow Horses" managed to get recognized in several categories for another year in a row, Netflix breakout "Black Doves" wasn't quite as fortunate. Star Keira Knightley was on many prediction lists for the lead actress category, but she ended up as a spy left out in the cold. The Netflix juggernaut was an Emmy darling in its first season, garnering a best drama series nomination and a trophy for star Lee Jung-jae in 2022. But the second season of the series, which streamed in December 2024, couldn't score a nod in a single category any more than the "Squid" characters could make it out of "Red Light, Green Light." Natasha Lyonne might need to work on her personal poker face. Although she received a nomination for her role as the lie-detecting accidental detective Charlie Cale in Peacock's "Poker Face" in its first season, she didn't make the list for her Season 2 performance. But the series did manage two nods overall, including one for "Wicked" star Cynthia Erivo, who used her acting magic to play quintuplets in the Season 2 premiere of "Poker." Once a big presence at the Emmys, the series' third season didn't garner a single nod, not for previously nominated star Melanie Lynskey or the show itself. The first two seasons each were nominated for the night's top prize: outstanding drama series. HBO's "Somebody Somewhere" is a quiet but superlative comedy about small-time life in Kansas that finished out a fantastic three-season run last fall. The Television Academy has finally caught up to its brilliance this year, nominating Jeff Hiller for supporting actor in a comedy and the show for a comedy writing award. But that leaves the series' star, Bridget Everett, behind. The creative success and emotional effect of "Somebody" is entirely contingent on the actress's nuanced performance. Thebest show of 2024didn't get the Emmy love it deserved. While "Disclaimer," Apple TV+'s twisty limited series from "Gravity" and "Roma" director Alfonso Cuarón, managed two nominations overall − for star Cate Blanchett and cinematography − the show should have been showered in nominations. The immersive series was a contender for best limited series and was competitive in additional acting races, primarily in supporting actor with Sacha Baron Cohen. Not since 2012 has NBC's chair-swiveling singing competition been left off the list of the best reality competition of the year, but it's been edged out in 2025 in favor of series like Peacock's "The Traitors."
