Eileen Fulton, soap actress who starred in 'As the World Turns' for 50 years, dies at 91New Foto - Eileen Fulton, soap actress who starred in 'As the World Turns' for 50 years, dies at 91

Eileen Fulton, a daytime television star who helped define the soap opera"As the World Turns,"has died. She was 91. Fulton, who pulled off the rare feat of remaining on the same soap for half a century, died July 14 in Asheville, North Carolina, according toan announcement from her family. Her death followed "a period of declining health." USA TODAY has reached out to Fulton's rep for comment. Born Margaret Elizabeth McLarty, the Daytime Emmy winner swapped her given title for a stage name and her North Carolina roots for the scrappy New York acting scene in the 1950s. Studying under some of the most notable acting coaches of the time, she notched her big break in 1960 when she was cast as Lisa Miller on CBS' "As the World Turns." Fulton portrayed big-haired villainess Lisa for a whopping 50 years, seeing the character through eight marriages and countless scandals, and becoming one of the longest-running soap stars along the way. She exited and re-entered the show several times throughout her run, a common trope in soap television, but ultimately returned to see the show off for its final episode in 2010. Said to be as full of spunk and panache as her character, Fultontold the Los Angeles Times in 2000that she was a "diva darling" behind the scenes. Once, when a producer refused to tell her whether Lisa was responsible for a murder written into the show, Fulton recalled saying: "We're live – don't forget. And if you don't tell me, I'll make up your mind for you on the air." In a seeming foreshadowing to its later cancellation, Fulton told the LA Times of the show: "I hope we don't fold, and I hope I don't get canned. But I do think if anything should happen, what would I do? My life would change radically. I would have to stop buying so many clothes." Ultimately, she went on to spend 10 more years as Lisa and no doubt decades more in the soap cannon as an example of enduring success in an oft-volatile genre. Her portrayal of Lisa earned her a spot in the Soap Opera Hall of Fame in 1998 and a Daytime Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. Throughout her career, she also dabbled in other artistic pursuits, performing as a singer in a cabaret act for several years and authoring two autobiographies and a series of mystery novels. LOS ANGELES (AP) — A man suspected ofdriving his car into a crowdon a sidewalk in Los Angeles, injuring 36 people, has a criminal history that includes a conviction for felony battery, officials said Sunday. The driver, identified by police as 29-year-old Fernando Ramirez, was attacked by bystanders afterthe crash early Saturdayin east Hollywood and paramedics later found that he had been shot. Police were still searching for the suspected shooter, described as a man with a goatee in a blue Dodgers jacket. Ramirez, of San Clemente, California, was recovering and was expected to face a felony charge of assault with a deadly weapon. He could not be reached for comment and it wasn't known if he had an attorney. Los Angeles police Capt. Ben Fernandes told KNBC-TV on Sunday that Ramirez was sentenced in 2020 for attacking a man outside of a Whole Foods grocery store in June 2019. He was on parole at the time of Saturday's crash, but it's unclear whether it was in connection with the 2019 attack or another case. Ramirez has had at least 11 criminal cases ranging from misdemeanors to felonies, KNBC reported. In January 2022, he was charged with felony domestic battery and entered a not guilty plea. That case remains open. A line of people — mostly women — were waiting to enter the Vermont Hollywood event venue around 2 a.m. when they were struck by a Nissan Versa that also hit a food vending cart and valet stand, Fire Capt. Adam VanGerpen said Saturday. At least 36 people were treated for injuries including fractures and lacerations, police said Sunday without providing updates on their conditions. It was not immediately clear if Ramirez was shot before or after the crash or why he drove into the crowd.

Alaska Airlines resumes operations after tech outage grounds all flightsNew Foto - Alaska Airlines resumes operations after tech outage grounds all flights

Alaska Airlines has resumed operations following an undisclosed technical error affecting its entire system for approximately three hours, the company announced. The carrier experienced an "IT outage that resulted in a temporary, system-wide ground stop for Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air flights" around 8 p.m. Pacific time Sunday. The stop was lifted at 11 p.m., the Seattle-based company said in a social media post. "As we reposition our aircraft and crews, there will most likely be residual impacts to our flights. It will take some time to get our overall operations back to normal," the post said. The Federal Aviation Administration website had confirmed a ground stop for all Alaska Airlines mainline and Horizon aircraft, referring to an Alaska Airlines subsidiary. The National Transportation Board last monthcredited the crew of Alaska Airlines flight 1282with the survival of passengers when adoor plug panel flew off the planeshortly after takeoff on Jan. 5, 2024, leaving a hole that sucked objects out of the cabin. In September, Alaska Airlines said it grounded its flights in Seattle briefly due to "significant disruptions" from an unspecified technology problem that was resolved within hours.

Cram Fire in Oregon rages as it nears megafire statusNew Foto - Cram Fire in Oregon rages as it nears megafire status

Firefighters in central Oregon made progress in their battle against ablazethat triggered evacuations and astate of emergencyas it tore across swaths of rugged land, destroying four homes and threatening hundreds of other buildings. The Cram Fire, which has become the nation's largest wildfire this year, has charred 150 square miles of land, an area larger than the size of Las Vegas. The blaze broke out on July 13 and burned for several days before undergoing explosive growth fueled by strong winds, high temperatures and low humidity. It was at 49% containment as of Sunday, July 20. The fire ignited near Willowdale, a sparsely populated area about 133 miles southeast of Portland, and swept through grasslands and rangeland in the region, fire officials said. The cause of the blaze is unclear and remains under investigation, officials said. If the Cram Fire grows by more than 4,200 acres, it will reach what's known as megafire status, meaning it will have burned more than 100,000 acres of land. Evacuation orders and warnings remain in place across at least three counties, including Jefferson, Wasco and Crook County, according toCentral Oregon Fire Information. In a statement on July 20, fire officials said they anticipate cooler weather, possible rain and higher humidity to "moderate fire behavior." Firefighters in Oregon have been aided by increasingly cooler and humid weather, which is expected to continue for the next few days. More than 930 fire personnel responded to the blaze and worked to stop its rapid spread. On July 20, crews traversed rugged terrain as they used dozers to carve containment lines. They recently focused on the southern edge of the blaze, thinning juniper trees along the fire lines to reduce potential fuels. Some personnel who were brought in to protect homes, businesses and other structures will be released as containment grows and cooler weather lingers, according to theCentral Oregon Fire Information. "Remaining personnel will continue working around structures to extinguish hot spots and ensure any lingering threats to homes are addressed," the fire agency said. While the Cram Fire was the largest wildfire in the nation, it was far from the only blaze scorching wide swaths of land. In northern Arizona, a pair of wildfires burningat or near the Grand Canyon North Rimhave charred over 70,000 acres of wildland. The White Fire, which devastated a section of the park, consuming a historic cabin and dozens of other buildings, was at 12,645 acres and 8% containment as of July 20. In western Colorado, crews working a series of wildfires made gains over the weekend, setting up fire lines and increasing containment percentages. The largest of the wildfires, the Deer Creek Fire, has consumed 16,340 acres of land in Colorado and Utah and was at 22% containment. The National Weather Service issued red flag warnings in Nevada and Wyoming as meteorologists anticipate "critical fire weather" on Monday, July 21. The weather warnings urge residents to avoid activities that could spark a fire, including yard work, target shooting, discarding cigarettes outdoors and lighting campfires. "A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly," read a warning from the weather service office in Elko, Nevada. "A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity values, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior."
