At least nine people were shot dead Saturday while playing pool in a tourist city in southwestern Ecuador, the country's prosecutor's office said. A group of armed men opened fire on several people at a bar in a working-class neighborhood of General Villamil Playas, a coastal city in the southern Guayas province and destination for local tourists. The Ecuadorian prosecutor's officesaid on social mediathat "armed individuals entered the establishment and shot at those present." Authorities said they were looking at security camera footage and cell phone videos in an effort to identify suspects. In aseparate social media post, the office posted an image of officers at the scene, saying bodies had been removed and ballistic evidence retrieved from the scene. #AHORA|#Guayas:#FiscalíaEcinicia –de oficio– una investigación previa por el#Asesinatode 9 personas en un billar del barrio Santa Isabel, en#Playas. Local media reports said the attackers were armed with automatic rifles. At the bar where the massacre occurred, relatives held two coffins Saturday night. Bullet holes were visible on the pool tables, according to images captured by an AFP reporter. Police Colonel Jhanon Varela told media that two people were injured in the attack and treated at a local hospital. Authorities have only been able to identify one body at the scene. "Unfortunately, when the police arrive, many of those affected by this event are removed from the scene by residents and family members," Varela said. "It is presumed that there may be more victims." Guayas Prefect Marcela Aguinaga said one of the victims was a coach at a provincial soccer school. Aguinagawrote on social media: "Violence ... seeks to bring us to our knees, silence us, and accustom us to horror. But we will not stay silent. Nor will we surrender." Wave of violence in Ecuador The shooting comes as Ecuador experiences its most violent start to a year in recent history, according to experts. In the first five months of 2025, Ecuador recorded 4,051 homicides, according to official figures. Drug trafficking organizations have been multiplying in Ecuador, where the homicide rate rose from six per 100,000 residents in 2018 to 38 per 100,000 in 2024. Following the recapture in June of the country's biggest drug lord,Adolfo Macias, alias Fito, after his escape from a maximum-security prison in 2024, criminal gang violence continues unabated. The Ecuadoran government on Sundayextradited Maciasto the United States. Aseven-count indictmentunsealed in Brooklyn charges Macías and an unidentified co-defendant with international cocaine distribution, conspiracy and weapons counts, including smuggling firearms from the U.S. A letter filed by the U.S. Department of Justice on Sunday said Macias was due to appear in a federal court on Monday "for an arraignment on the superseding Indictment in this case." This week, in the western province of Manabi, the stronghold of Fito and his gang Los Choneros, at least 20 people were killed in deadly violence in several cities, including Manta, where Fito was recaptured. Last year, the U.S. classified Los Choneros as one of the most violent gangs and affirmed its connection to powerfulMexican drug cartelswho threaten Ecuador and the surrounding region. Saturday afternoon, Interior Minister John Reimberg announced increased security in Manta, one of Ecuador's main fishing ports, with 2,500 police officers "deployed at strategic points." Once considered a bastion of peace in Latin America, Ecuador has been plunged into crisis after years of expansion by transnational cartels that use its ports to ship drugs to the United States and Europe. Earlier this year, a leader of one of Ecuador's biggest crime syndicates, Los Lobos, wasarrested at his homein the coastal city of Portoviejo. Carlos D, widely known by his alias El Chino, was the second-in-command of Los Lobos and "considered a high-value target," the armed forces said in a statement. TheU.S. last year declared Los Lobosto be the largest drug trafficking organization in Ecuador. What shocked "Matlock" star Kathy Bates? Deadly wave of Russian missiles pummel Ukraine as Kyiv's drones spark Moscow airport disruptionsNew Foto - Deadly wave of Russian missiles pummel Ukraine as Kyiv's drones spark Moscow airport disruptions

New waves of deadly Russian missiles pounded Ukraine overnight Sunday while long range drone attacks by Kyiv sparked travel chaos at Moscow's airports. Residents of Kyiv and other major Ukrainian cities faced another sleepless night on Sunday as Russia launched 450 missiles and drones overnight into Monday, Ukraine's Air Force said. The majority were shot down but 23 struck across three locations and debris from intercepted missiles landed in 12 areas, it added. Nationwide air raid warnings were issued in most regions of Ukraine, with local authorities reporting at least two people killed and 16 wounded in the past 24 hours. "Russian strikes are always an assault on humanity – in Kyiv, a kindergarten caught fire, along with residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said. In Kyiv, the alert was raised at 11 p.m. Sunday local time and remained in place for eight hours, with one killed and six wounded, police said. Standing in the rubble of his burned-out apartment in the capital on Monday morning, Oleksandr Berdychevskyi, 38, recalled how the city was rocked by explosions overnight. "There were three explosions. I was in bed when I heard the fourth. The door blew open and shards of glass landed on me," he told CNN. "The balcony was on fire. I ran to the front door, but it was jammed," he added, saying he was only able to break it down because he felt so full of adrenaline. Berdychevskyi said all his documents and cash savings were destroyed in the fire, leaving him with just 2,000 hryvnias (about $50) in his wallet. Cursing Russia as she sifted through the ashes, his mother, Liliya Berdichevska, could not stop crying. "They are monsters. Just monsters. How lucky that my granddaughter wasn't home and that my son is alive," she told CNN. Elsewhere in Kyiv, Kateryna, who only gave her first name, was among residents who rushed into Lukianivska subway station for shelter, in the city's northwest, where the entrance was damaged in the strikes. "It was very scary when the attack happened," she told Reuters, sitting on the station escalator with her husband and pet dog which the couple carried over shards and splinters in the aftermath of the strike. "There was lots of smoke and dust, we all got very scared. There was a little panic but, because life has taught us how to behave, we've all gotten used to it. We cared for each other and for the animals too," she said. Fires broke out on the roof across several buildings and a supermarket in the city's southeastern Darnytskyi district. Fires were also reported in the more central districts of Shevchenkivskyi and Dniprovskiy, affecting two residential buildings and a shopping mall, with debris falling on a kindergarten in Dniprovskiy. In the northeastern city of Kharkiv, city mayor Ihor Terekhov reported 12 hits including one that ignited a blaze near a multistory residential building in the Kyivskyi district to the north. Elsewhere in the city, windows were blown out and there was damage to a road, tram tracks and electric wires. This latest attack includes cruise and ballistic missiles as well as powerful advancedKinzhal missiles, which are difficult to intercept, Ukraine's Air Force confirmed. Russia has intensified its overnight strikes in recent weeks, targeting cities far from the frontline. Earlier this month it launched its largest drone attack on Ukraine involving 728 attack and decoy drones and 13 missiles, Ukraine's Air Force said. Kyiv's forces have also continued to find ways of striking deep inside Russia. Over the weekend, thousands of passengers were forced to queue or sleep on the floor due to flight delays and cancelations at major Moscow airports sparked by long-range drone attacks, as seen in videos from Russian media. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the military downed 49 drones between Friday evening and Monday morning, with no injuries or significant damage. Dozens more were intercepted in west and southwest regions including Kursk, Rostov, Bryansk, Kaluga, Tula and Lipetsk, the Russian defense ministry confirmed. In his daily address on Saturday, Zelensky called fortalks with Russiathis week, to push forward ceasefire negotiations amid growing US pressure on Moscow to reach a deal. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Moscow was "ready to move quickly" on achieving a peace deal with Ukraine, but its "main goal" was to achieve its "objectives." The last round of ceasefire talks in Istanbul ended swiftly inearly June, with Russian and Ukrainian delegates meeting for barely over an hour before calling it quits. Russia put forward maximalist territorial demands as part of preconditions for a ceasefire. Ukraine has previously refused to consider any territorial concessions in exchange for peace. Egypt provides free train rides for Sudanese refugees returning homeNew Foto - Egypt provides free train rides for Sudanese refugees returning home

CAIRO (AP) — Hundreds of people who have been displaced by fighting inSudangathered Monday at the central train station inCairoto begin a free journey home. The Egyptian government is funding train rides to Khartoum, Sudan's capital, which recently was recaptured by the Sudanese Armed Forces from its rival, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, or RSF. Sudan has been in the throes ofcivil war since April 2023. The battle for power between the military and the RSF has caused ahumanitarian crisis. Over 40,000 people have been killed and the war has caused one of the world's largest displacement emergencies. Egypt hosts the largest number of Sudanese refugees from the war with over 1.5 million people who fled north across the border. Over 7 million have been displaced internally as the war engulfed much of the country. The RSF took Khartoum at the start of the fighting in 2023 and held the capital until the government declared itsrecapture on May 20. Khartoum was largely destroyed, including the presidential palace and the airport, but is experiencing a slow rebirth as residents return and markets reopen. Electricity and basic services are not fully operational around the city. The journey from Cairo to Khartoum is about 2,080 kilometers (1,292 miles) and will include a train ride of about 12 hours to the southern Egyptian city of Aswan, where riders will change to ferries and buses to cross into Sudan. People packed their lives in small suitcases as they as they filled the train Monday. Some cried with "overwhelming emotions" including sadness and joy about leaving Egypt and returning home, said Sudanese journalist Asem al-Taieb, one of the train riders. "I am happy because I am finally going back to my family and my children," said Awatef al Hassan, originally from Omdurman, Sudan, who is returning with her daughter.

Eileen Fulton, soap actress who starred in 'As the World Turns' for 50 years, dies at 91New Foto - Eileen Fulton, soap actress who starred in 'As the World Turns' for 50 years, dies at 91

Eileen Fulton, a daytime television star who helped define the soap opera"As the World Turns,"has died. She was 91. Fulton, who pulled off the rare feat of remaining on the same soap for half a century, died July 14 in Asheville, North Carolina, according toan announcement from her family. Her death followed "a period of declining health." USA TODAY has reached out to Fulton's rep for comment. Born Margaret Elizabeth McLarty, the Daytime Emmy winner swapped her given title for a stage name and her North Carolina roots for the scrappy New York acting scene in the 1950s. Studying under some of the most notable acting coaches of the time, she notched her big break in 1960 when she was cast as Lisa Miller on CBS' "As the World Turns." Fulton portrayed big-haired villainess Lisa for a whopping 50 years, seeing the character through eight marriages and countless scandals, and becoming one of the longest-running soap stars along the way. She exited and re-entered the show several times throughout her run, a common trope in soap television, but ultimately returned to see the show off for its final episode in 2010. Said to be as full of spunk and panache as her character, Fultontold the Los Angeles Times in 2000that she was a "diva darling" behind the scenes. Once, when a producer refused to tell her whether Lisa was responsible for a murder written into the show, Fulton recalled saying: "We're live – don't forget. And if you don't tell me, I'll make up your mind for you on the air." In a seeming foreshadowing to its later cancellation, Fulton told the LA Times of the show: "I hope we don't fold, and I hope I don't get canned. But I do think if anything should happen, what would I do? My life would change radically. I would have to stop buying so many clothes." Ultimately, she went on to spend 10 more years as Lisa and no doubt decades more in the soap cannon as an example of enduring success in an oft-volatile genre. Her portrayal of Lisa earned her a spot in the Soap Opera Hall of Fame in 1998 and a Daytime Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. Throughout her career, she also dabbled in other artistic pursuits, performing as a singer in a cabaret act for several years and authoring two autobiographies and a series of mystery novels.
