The 57-year-old monarch was taking part in the Copa del Rey MAPFRE sailing competition on Thursday, July 31, joining Admiral Jaime Rodríguez Toubes and his crew aboard the Aifos, a vessel of the Spanish Navy. While preparing for the day of competition, the King was seated on the deck of the ship when a heavy sail and boom dropped to the deck just inches from his head. As Prince of Asturias, he trained with the Spanish Navy before becoming Captain General upon acceding to the throne in 2014. He has a close relationship with Admiral Toubes and annually competes aboard the Aifos, which finished second in the 2024 competition. His daughter and heir,Princess Leonor, 19, is currently following in her father's footsteps as far as preparation for the throne. The Princess of Asturias is currently in the midst of a three-year military training program, and on July 16, was promoted to the rank of Midshipman of 2nd grade and awarded the Grand Cross of Naval Merit by her father.
