UN rights office says Israeli settlement plan breaks international lawNew Foto - UN rights office says Israeli settlement plan breaks international law

(Reuters) -The U.N. human rights office said on Friday an Israeli plan to build to build thousands of new homes between an Israeli settlement in the West Bank and near East Jerusalem was illegal under international law, and would put nearby Palestinians at risk of forced eviction, which it described as a war crime. Israeli far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich on Thursday vowed to press on a long-delayed settlement project, saying the move would "bury" the idea of a Palestinian state. The U.N. rights office spokesperson said the plan would break the West Bank into isolated enclaves and that it was "a war crime for an occupying power to transfer its own civilian population into the territory it occupies". About 700,000 Israeli settlers live among 2.7 million Palestinians in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Israel annexed East Jerusalem in 1980, a move not recognised by most countries, but has not formally extended sovereignty over the West Bank. Most world powers say settlement expansion erodes the viability of a two-state solution by breaking up territory the Palestinians seek as part of a future independent state. The two-state plan envisages a Palestinian state in East Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza, existing side by side with Israel, which captured all three territories in the 1967 Middle East war. Israel cites historical and biblical ties to the area and says the settlements provide strategic depth and security and that the West Bank is "disputed" not "occupied". A man who fled asan immigration raidunfolded ata Home Depotin Southern California was killed when he ran onto a freeway as federal agents moved in, local officials said. The man ran from a Home Depot in Monrovia, about 20 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles, as Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents began the operation Thursday morning, Monrovia City Manager Dylan Feik said in astatement. He was heading north across eastbound Interstate 210 when he stepped in front of an SUV going about 60 mph in the far-left lane, the California Highway Patrol said in a release, citing investigators. The vehicle's right front end hit the man, who suffered major injuries and died at a hospital. The person who ran onto the freeway was "not being pursued by any DHS law enforcement," the agency told CNN in a statement. "We do not know their legal status. We were not aware of this incident or notified by California Highway Patrol until hours after operations in the area had concluded." Home Depot locationsincreasingly have become targetsfor immigration raids as the Trump administration amps up deportation operations as part of a broadercrackdown. The home improvement retailer traditionally has been a place documented and undocumented day laborers gather to pick up jobs as roofers, painters and construction workers. Thursday's death followed that of a farmworker fatally injured in a fall duringa chaotic ICE raidin July at a California cannabis facility. It also came as the Trump administrationasksthe Supreme Court to halt anorderbarring immigration authorities from stopping or arresting people in and near Los Angeles based solely on factors like what language speak or where they work. At least 10 people were detained in the ICE operation in Monrovia, said California Assemblymember John Harabedian, whose district includes the city. He called the incident "frightening and chaotic," adding in a statement: "Raids like this do not make our streets safer – they terrorize families, instill fear, and put lives at risk." CNN has reached out to ICE and the Department of Homeland Security. Home Depot wasn't "notified that ICE activities are going to happen and we aren't involved in the operations," the retailer told CNN on Thursday. The man's name is being withheld pending notification of relatives, the highway patrol said. "The crash, including circumstances surrounding how and why the pedestrian was on the freeway, remains under investigation by the CHP's Baldwin Park Area," the agency said. The National Day Laborer Organizing Network is working to identify his family. "We also want to support the workers who witnessed and experienced this horrible raid and tragic death," said the group, whichadvocatesfor day laborers, migrants and low-wage workers. When is "Wednesday" Season 2, Part 2 coming out? All about the horrors to come (and a surprise return)

Courtesy of Netflix Wednesdayseason 2 debuted the first four episodes of the eight-episode season on Aug. 6. The creators toldEntertainment Weeklythat fans should be "very worried" about what's still to come. Part 2 ofWednesdayseason 2 arrives on Sept. 3. Warning: This article contains spoilers for part 1 ofWednesdayseason 2. After nearly three years in the shadows,Wednesdayis back with black pigtails and a withering gaze. The first four episodes of season 2 crept ontoNetflixearlier this month, throwing our favorite heartless teenager (played byJenna Ortega) headfirst into a new mystery, complete with secret experiments, ravenous zombies, and a spat of unsettling bird murders. "We didn't want to repeat ourselves, as second seasons are tricky things with a lot of shows, and we wanted to change up the mystery storytelling," co-creator Alfred Gough toldEntertainment Weeklyfor ourdigital cover story. "So the idea is that at the end of episode 4, literally all hell breaks loose. It propels you forward, but I don't think you quite know where it's going." Fellow co-creator Miles Millar didn't mince words, telling EW that viewers should be"very worried"about what's still to come. And with that haunting tease, here's everything you need to know aboutWednesdayseason 2, part 2, from an official trailer breakdown to its streaming release date. Bernard Walsh/Netflix The fourth episode ofWednesdayseason 2 marks the proper return of Marilyn Thornhill (Christina Ricci), the season 1 baddie also known as Laurel Gates. Now imprisoned at the Willow Hill Psychiatric Hospital, she agrees to help Dr. Fairburn (Thandiwe Newton) control the Hyde, but only if she can see Tyler (Hunter Doohan). The meeting turns violent when Tyler transforms into his monstrous alter ego, killing her and setting his sights on Wednesday. Once he tracks Wednesday down, Tyler grabs her and throws her out a window before escaping from the hospital. She plummets to the ground below, landing hard on the cobblestone. Our heroine is left for dead as Tyler disappears into the woods. "It's the first time, at least in the season, where Wednesday truly is out of her depth," Ortega told EW of the moment Wednesday comes face-to-face with the Hyde. "They were talking about me running down the hall or me doing some sort of slide underneath [the Hyde], and I remember telling them, 'I don't think so, because this isn't an action show. And Wednesday's too smart for that. She has to understand that there's no chance. She could run, but it's a huge monster.'" Meanwhile, Uncle Fester (Fred Armisen) gets himself committed to Willow Hill to uncover the truth behind "LOIS," an acronym for "Long-term Outcast Integration Study," a covert program designed to kidnap outcasts, trap them in a hidden facility beneath the hospital, and conduct experiments on them (kind of likeGen V). He and Wednesday later discover these underground cells and several imprisoned test subjects, one of whom may be connected to Tyler. The operation is run by Fairburn's assistant, Judi (Heather Matarazzo), who is continuing the twisted legacy of her father, Augustus Stonehurst, by attempting to give "normies" the supernatural powers of outcasts. Oh, and she's also revealed to be the hooded Avian controlling the crows. Yeah, there's a lot going on. Finally, we learn that Ophelia, Morticia's (Catherine Zeta-Jones) long-lost sister, was once committed to Willow Hill after a psychic breakdown not unlike the one Wednesday is currently facing. Ophelia's fate remains unknown, layering in another mystery for the second half of the season. Bernard Walsh/Netflix Netflix dropped thetrailer for the second half ofWednesdayseason 2on Thursday, Aug. 14, teasing much spookiness to come. The trailer opens with Wednesday waking up in a hospital bed, only to be greeted by Principal Larissa Weems (Gwendoline Christie) dressed as a nurse. Yes,thatPrincipal Weems. The one whodiedin the season 1 finale. If you're confused, it's okay. So is Wednesday. "Rise and shine, sleepyhead! Ready for your sponge bath?" Weems chirps. "What ring of hell is this?" Wednesday deadpans before the two are transported to a surreal dreamscape featuring a giant gorgon-head fireplace. Weems coolly explains: "This isn't hell, Miss Adams, but I understand the confusion." When Wednesday asks the question we're all thinking — "Why are you here?" — Weems responds, "Because I am your new spirit guide. Surprise!" We then cut to a brief glimpse of Tyler out in the world as Wednesday warns Enid (Emma Myers) that he "has plans to kill both of us," but that she plans to "fix" everything. "Fix it? You're the reason he escaped," Enid snaps, referring to Wednesday's role in setting Tyler free at the end of part 1. Bernard Walsh/Netflix The trailer also teases the unearthing of Addams family secrets. "Every family has dark chapters, Wednesday," Morticia intones. But time is running out, and Wednesday tells her parents that "a life hangs in the balance." "If you don't hurry, you'll have nothing left to save," Weems ominously adds as chaos unfolds in Jericho and Nevermore. In the trailer's final seconds, we hear what certainly sounds like the voice ofLady Gagadelivering a spine-chilling warning: "Beware. There will be a price to pay." Helen Sloan/Netflix Wednesdayseason 2, part 2, pounces onto Netflix on Sept. 3, 2025. The four-episode arc is sure to end with a bang, withTim Burtonhimself directing the penultimate episode and season finale. Helen Sloan/Netflix Wednesdayisavailable to stream on Netflix. Box Office: 'Nobody 2' Picks Up $1.3 Million in Thursday PreviewsNew Foto - Box Office: 'Nobody 2' Picks Up $1.3 Million in Thursday Previews

"Nobody 2" picked up $1.3 million in preview screenings on Thursday as the action sequel heads into an opening weekend that will see it face off against "Weapons." The film, which brings back Bob Odenkirk as a typical suburbanite who racks up a serious body count when not driving a minivan, is projected to earn between $10 million to $12 million from 3,200 North American theaters. That would best the $6.8 million opening of the first "Nobody," but it's worth remembering that the 2021 original opened when cinemas were just coming back after being shut down during COVID. "Nobody" went on to earn $27 million domestically and $57 million worldwide while becoming a popular title on premium video-on-demand platforms. Sharon Stone co-stars as a mob boss with a few screws loose — her gang of bootleggers toggles with Hutch, threatening to ruin everyone's R&R. "Nobody 2" was modestly budgeted at $25 million. The first film carried a $16 million price tag. Universal produced and distributed the sequel, which will expand to 3,200 North American theaters over the weekend. "Nobody 2" will likely be no match for "Weapons," a twisty horror film from Warner Bros. and New Line thatopened to a smashing $43.5 millionlast weekend. It's continued to be a box office winner throughout the week and should top charts with $20 million to $22 million in its sophomore outing. This weekend's other new release, Spike Lee's crime thriller "Highest 2 Lowest," will debut in roughly 300 screens. It's a remake of Akira Kurosawa's 1963 classic "High and Low." Denzel Washington stars as a music mogul who gets tangled up in a ransom plot. Apple backed the film which A24 is releasing in theaters before it debuts on Apple TV+ on Sept. 5. Critics have largely embraced the picture, withVariety's Peter Debruge writingthat the film's "sensational third act more than justifies what might have seemed an unnecessary update." AARON CHOWN/POOL/AFP via Getty VJ Day marks the end of WWII in Japan and the Pacific. The Japanese surrender followed the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, 1945. In May, the royal family, including William and Kate's three young children,Prince George, 12,Princess Charlotte, 10, andPrince Louis, 7, commemorated the end of the war in Europe. Then, there were parades and a flypast at Buckingham Palace. William and Kate's message on Aug. 15 came ahead of a formal commemoration of the anniversary, whereKing CharlesandQueen Camillaled the U.K. at a service of remembrance at the National Artboretum in Staffordshire, England. Chris Jackson/Getty Earlier, Charles, 76, addressed the nation, praising the ever-decreasing number of veterans and their loved ones for their service of eight decades ago. "So to the families of all those who served, and to that sadly dwindling band of veterans among us still, please know that the courage and camaraderie displayed in humanity's darkest hour is a flame that shall blaze for eternity – a beacon that honors our past and guides our future." And conjuring up memories of his own grandfather George VI who spoke 80 years ago at the end of the war. He said, "The war is over', declared my Grandfather, King George VI, in his address to the nation and Commonwealth on V.J. Day 80 years ago today – four short words after six long years of bloodshed, fear and suffering." Aaron Chown - Pool/Getty "Seldom can a simple message have resonated with such a potent mix of relief, celebration, and sorrow for those who never lived to see the glow of freedom's new dawn," the message continued. "On this day of profound remembrance, I speak to you in that same spirit of commemoration and celebration as we honor anew all those whose service and sacrifice saw the forces of liberty prevail." The Prince and Princess of Wales/Instagram He also referred to the suffering of the cities under the dropping of the first atomic bombs in the last weeks of the war. "On this landmark anniversary, we should also pause to acknowledge that in the war's final act, an immense price was paid by the citizens of Hiroshima and Nagasaki – a price we pray no nation need ever pay again," Charles said. "But in recalling so much suffering, we must not lose sight of how great was the cause and how sweet the victory. For those heroes of V.J. Day gave us more than freedom; they left us the example of how it can and must be protected," he added.
